I used to read almost all sf and fantasy I could get my hands on, but these days I tend to shy away from the epics minimum three books series after Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series spoiled those for me.

These days I'm more into less formulaic fiction (still mostly science fiction and fantasy), more intelligent if you will.

On my top list can be found:
- Most books by Terry Pratchett, especially the later Discworld books (which are both serious as funny).

- The books of Iain (M.) Banks, both his sf as his more literary works, with a special mention to Player of Games.

- The books of China Miéville. Highly innovative fantasy, great worldbuilding, great politics.

- Recently I discovered Neil Gaiman, at the moment I'm thoroughly enjoying American Gods. Haven't finished it yet, but so far it's great.

The 2nd one is definitely more 'gamey'.

I'm thinking of letting his left arm show, with a big fat cigar in his hand.

Nice, you should get rid of the black outline on the clothes though  :)

It's not black, but very dark red. Too dark apparently.  ;D

I have a very bright monitor, I guess. I'll have to lighten the darkest colours a bit.

I'm looking for some fellow aspiring game makers.

People following the Critic Lounge recently might have noticed: I've been practicing my sprite drawing the last few weeks.

Some of the results of my most recent drawings (Search the Critics Lounge forum for more recent work):

One thing I noticed: I'm getting quicker, but I'm still not very fast. I do want to make a game, but at this rate it's gonna take a while. As you can see I'm a decent sprite artist. I'm a professional programmer, so although I haven't scripted much in AGS, I'm confident I can take that part on me.

What I'm looking for are one or more people, who, just like me, are willing to start making a game and finish it. Especially people who can draw in a style similar to mine and with some great imagination.

Well, enough rambling: Basically I want some sparring partners, who can help me, and who I can help, to start and finish a game.

PM me, if you're interested, or if you have some questions. I'd love to hear from you!

An update based on your comments:

I tried not to follow all your edits to closely, so I would learn from it, but I really like how the shoes looked.  ;D
Feet are not my speciality.

For those who can't be bothered to google it, like me, what the hell is it?

Thanks!

This is a stupid post, you might as well have googled it.

Nothing stupid about it. If you can google everything, why should any post be complete anymore.  ::)

A new character!

This is an orc businessman.

To Do:
- shading
- Make his face look more orcy
- draw feet.

How can I make him look more like an orc, while still fitting my current drawing style?

Well, it would provide more motivation for people to falsely boost their own scores.

That would be a problem.

Only registered users can vote right? Well, then it's checkable if there's cheating.

A rating system is always subjective, it's always based on opinions, not fact. How could it not be arbitrary?
That is simply false. Most good rating systems are, or at least purport to be, based upon fact. You know, to make them not arbitrary.

Ok, that makes me wondering, what is in your opinion the difference between this rating systems, and good rating systems?

QuoteI always rate games after playing them, even more so if I disagree with the current score.
Yes, but because most people don't do that, the current scores are arbitrary. So in effect, you want to play a number of arbitrarily chosen games to find out if you agree with their arbitrary scores. You can already do that.
Yes, you can do that, but you need to wade through pages of games before finding highly rated games, however arbitrary the rating system is.

You seem to think adding a sort by rating option won't advance the games listing, but I don't see how it would reduce the value of the listing in any way if such an option would be added.

I want to add that my post about the thread that got looked in GiP, was in no way meant as a way to disrespect the work Darth Mandarb does!

I'm very happy I'm no moderator. I have been on some forums in the past, and it's a unthankful position to have.

So, basically: thanks for the job you do.

False.

Does a rating of 78% mean the game is precisely 1% better then a game with 79%?  Ofcourse not.

But on the other hand, would it help my choices when trying to pick a game if I could sort it by rating? Hell yeah.
I'd love to play all the 90% games. If only, to see if the rating's right.

I always rate games after playing them, even more so if I disagree with the current score.

You can try Completed Game Announcement board. Popular games are on top all the time, because they get many comments.

NEW popular games are on top, but as games get older, their threads disappear even for the most popular games.

If you're new tot the site and the games, currently the best ways is the 'Pick of the Month'-page, but it just takes a few days to play through thoses games.

Sorting by current ratings wouldn't work, as those ratings are highly arbitrary.

Every rating system is arbitrary. But still, it's better than no rating at all.

I would really like such a sorting function. I returned to the site after a few months, and I had no easy way to find out which good games were made in my absence.

I think this is a good example of too harsh moderation:

Ok, it's a parody thread, maybe it should have been posted in a different subforum, but I found it quit funny, why close it immediately?

I just needed to say how stupendously gorgeous that first picture is. Thanks JimmyShelter - I'm going to go google for more works of Anton Piek now!

As for what inspires me to make games - I'd have to say playing someone else's games, or reading a book.

To increase the changes of finding images: search for 'Anton Pieck'. That's the correct spelling.  ;)

More Dutchmen here, than I thought...

One last thing then.. what stops the airship from floating away? Maybe you have that in mind already, but figured it's worth asking just incase!  :)

Argh, I was planning to draw some lines tieing the boat to the shore/cliff, but I somehow forgot it every edit.  ::)

Your screenshot tags got mixed up.

Great looking screenshots. Impressive if you only used paint. I couldn't live without Photoshop anymore. I love me some layers.

Story sounds original too.  Good luck on your game!
