Thanks for the compliments on the style!

Sometimes we forgot the wall is thick. I think adding an inner arc can add some depth to the window (the widht of the window in my picture is far too wide, the perspective is somewhat forced and the colour choiche for the inner part is debatable, but I think that way is easier to see what my words are not able to explain).

Thanks. I'm going to leave the building for now. I'm going to draw some practice buildings before returning to this background. The wall thickness comment is a really good point!

-tried to give volume and elasticity to the balloon
-moved the back side up and added fixtures

I tend to draw my lines too straight, your balloon edit really helps. I shows I can maintain a simple clean style, without making all lines straight and boring.
I just noticed the back fixtures were missing, I hoped nobody had seen it.  ;D

Made a suggestion about how the clouds could look.

Nice, mind if I snatch them?

Current WIP version:

I'm going to let this one 'rest' for a while. I have a certain style in mind for the buildings in my game, and I want to practice that style first, before finishing this one. All your comments were very helpful, thanks a lot!

To do (but later  ;):
- Building
- Making the cliff and ground more interesting

Sometimes you play a game, see a screenshot or other art, or maybe hear a song and it immediatly makes you want to make a game.

In my case I recently saw some pictures of a Dutch artist from the previous century, who drew paintings of a Dutch past that never was. A romanticized view of the 18th and 19th century.
These images really make me want to make a fantasy game. (which I don't need, because I have to many ideas as it is allready  ;D).

I just really like the look of the buildings, and the use of colours.

I thought it would be a nice idea to start a thread, so other people can also show what inspires them.

On a bright note:

This could be the first day in months with over 200 posts! (This is post 198...)

Nice suggestions GarageGothic, thanks.

I'm currently finishing the line-art.

How do I give the door and window frames depth? Somehow my approach seems to 'fat'.

How can I make the door look more like wood?

Good point regarding the name, anyway. Made me laugh. Isn't Mohammed, like, the most common name?

Mostly because it's a custom to name your eldest son after the prophet. It is believed (if it's true is as always disputed) that the prophet was the first one with that name.
So everyone called Mohammed is named after him.

Still a load of bollocks to give someone 40 lashes ofcourse.

Looks great.

More natural than your first one.

In the USA, if she'd cut up a US flag to mae a bear some clothes, she could be arrested, too..

I doubt that she would be punished with 40 lashes though.

I thought maybe the online members would reassure me; offer me a few words of comfort but I should have foreseen I would be picked on instead. I definitely need to stop posting here, this community is way too unpleasant.

As far as I understood the comments, nobody picked on you. Some people displayed surprise that with your husband in the same house, you'd rather ask a bunch of strangers on the internet what to do, then wake him up.
That's not picking on you.

This forum isn't unpleasant, but I guess you might be a bit to sensitive.

As far as my experiences go, this is one of the most layed back places on the internet.

One 'problem' I have with adventure games is that the enviroment somehow doesn't always seem alive:
There are few characters to interact with even if the game takes place in a big city or country. Characters stay at one location for the duration of the game, and traffic is non-existent.

One of the games I first realized this was true was the first Monkey Island game. Melee Island is so empty. But there where in game explanations, so it was explained. Still, it didn't feel alive to me. (I still loved the game, so it wasn't that big of a problem).

You could ofcourse introduce far more characters to the game, but adventure gamers have learned that every character in a game must have something useful to attribute, so you must talk to them all.  ::)
If you have multiple characters who don't have anything useful to say, and just some who do, the player might get frustrated, and how can the player know which characters do have something useful to say.

So basically my question is, how can you make the world of an adventure game more 'alive' without making it boring/frustrating while doing it?

The structure-thing is a good idea.

I'm currently working on detailing the house a bit more. Adding a lamp, and depth to the door, etc.

I basically have these questions:

- How can I make the ground look more interesting, without loosing the simplicity of the drawing style?

- How can I make the balloon look rounder?

- How can I make sure Matt sees it's an airship?  ;D

- How can I make the walls of the  house look more real? They're plastered walls, so drawing stones doesn;t make sense.

Now on topic..
How to match your character style..(my way)
I carefully see how I've drawn my characters then try to do the same with the background..
ex.. instead of black you're putting a color (in the sailor's occasion it's purple) so you have to do the same on your background(not put purple but put some color instead of black outlines)

The background isn't shaded yet, because I wanted to get the layout/design right first. That's why the background doesn't match the characters completely.

I didn't use any black outlines btw, allthough I can see it looks that way on the building.

I think the whole discussion in this thread about liberal/conservative paints a good image of what is 'wrong' with this forum.

It's an adventure game forum, why are we even discussing politics?

More gaming threads!

For example the 'So, what's the deal with adventure games?' ( http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=32976.0 ) is a really great example of threads that really make me visit this forum.

I tried to use your comments but still keep as much of my work as I could. (ok, I'm lazy  ;D).

Does this seem like an improvement, or are there still major issues?
I know it's too flat at the comment considering the shadows and textures, but i'm keeping that mostly for when it's finished.

I tried to change the perspective on the house, but somehow I couldn't get it right at other angles.
What I mostly did now is trying to move/change things a little just to make the picture more interesting to look at, and more clear as to what is depicted.

If it seems I ignored your comments, please be assured, I read all comments, and I definitely learn something from all of them!

I'm not a 'full-time' regular. Once every few months I get the adventure game bug, and I become a regular visitor for a while.

One thing I noticed is that the 'Critics Lounge' subforum get less posts, both in new threads, but also in replies to threads. For example, there are now 5 threads with posts from today, in the past it would be almost all threads on the first page that got new replies in a day.

If you want people to stay in this community, I think this subforum is one of the main areas to focus on. Encourage people posting there, and help them, and they will stay.

(I do have two threads there I started recently which got a lot of replies, so it isn't too bad. I'm happy with the replies I got).

Pixie Marmalade = Sprite Jam

The question you asked is the one you're supposed to answer.

Doh! I somehow thought it was the animation contest.  ;D

I wonder if "dead baby" has been suggested in the "things that haven't been inventory items" thread yet?

I must admit I laughed out loud after reading this.

Now I'll have to clean my brain.

Why would you want to how far you can go? I think of no mature and good reason.
