Critics' Lounge / Re: Character Help!

It doesn't look bad at all, unfinished maybe, but not bad. Indeed some shading would make it look better, take a look at this step-by-step tutorial for example.
You're more or less at point 3 of the picture included there. Try to shape the folds of your character's clothes, add some highlights to her hair, make her face seem less flat. Add details if you can - that's the tricky part, but can be learned too if you study other people's sprites careful enough.

By the way, is your character a child? Body proportions would suggest so.

I thought it might be cool to have a fallen statue head in this theme and I was wrong. This is by far the most boring background I've ever made, I think. Oh well :)

Thanks to all those who participated. I'll edit this post tomorrow to reveal the three proud owners of a smexy succubus trophy.

(That means there's still chance to submit a late entry if anyone's been working on one and didn't make it till 15th  :))

Edit: No more entries, so here are the results:
First place, this trophy: and the honor/pain of holding the next competition goes to Crimson Wizard. Your Demon of Impotent Suffering is simply stunning in its gruesomeness. And a nice description there, too!
Second place and this trophy: goes to Pinback. Because this thing really looks like a demon spider. Not that I've ever seen one..
Third place and this trophy: goes to Victor6. Because of awesome details, lovely design and nostalgic SNES-ish feel.

Extra credit to EdLoen for a really nice story =)

Thanks again to all who participated, you made awesome entries. Each entry had something appealing in it so I had a really hard time choosing between them! So good work everyone, and good luck in the next competitions :)

There aren't any :) The sprite should be usable in AGS, but that's about that.

Very cool entries guys, thanks! Keep them coming :)

Draw an infernal being. It can, but doesn't have to be of humanoid shape - a sexy succubus is as fine as a pesky little imp or even a large floating eyeball with tentacles.

Optional: name your demon and/or give a short description of what sort of havoc can it wreak upon unwary humans.

Have fun!

From what I remember, choosing correct dialogue option while talking with Bess did give points, as it counts towards the "happy couple" ending. So I'd try that anyway.

There's a simple trick you can try if you want to check if your sprite has right proportions. Take anything you're sure about (there are plenty of example drawings, photos work well too), resize it to match the size of your sprite and draw a few lines in key points like chin, shoulders, crotch and such. If key points in your sprite and your reference match, then it should be fine. If not, try to fix them.

And as for the shading, what Victor6 did with the left side of the imagei s a way to go in my opinion. Makes the sprite look far less flat.

Uh.. maybe I'm not really a master when it comes to reading musical notes and generally you all know better than me, but this doesn't seem that complicated if you put a little effort into it.

There's a Wiki entry with a translation of neumes and I even found a few midi versions of Ad Te levavi animam after a minute of googling... and yeah, a modern interpretation in pdf version too. Shouldn't that give a hint?

A team effort to break into something big plus character switching during gameplay? Well that certainly does ring a bell  :)

Might be safer to deem Borga the winner instead of me anyway... she's got axe & attitude.

Thanks Mad and Midian, I'll come up with a new competition soon.

Borga's husband, Gunnar the Bloodthirsty, didn't exactly prove as bloodthirsty as expected. Hail the new Queen of the Vikings.

Hints & Tips / Re: A Tale Of Two Kingdoms

Spoiler
The appearance of the NPC in the town square is random. If you are trying to get past the town square from the docks, just leave the town and come back after a while. Or you can simply try to enter-leave the town square a few times until Geraint is gone (I don't think he spots you immediately after you enter the town square).

Even though every entry had an original idea and quite a nice design too, I have to pick a winner.
So thank you all for participating and here are the results:

First place:
johnnyfreak

Second place:
NsMn

Third place:
Edloen

johnnyfreak, congratulations and good luck hosting the next competition =)

johnnyfreak, there is no such restriction. You made a perfectly valid entry.

Next: Oh come on, he's just a troll.

Jakerpot. The mere use of a blurring tool does not yet disqualify a picture from being called pixel art. Actually, the use of filters and tools other than plain brush or pencil is rather common among pixel artists, at least from what I've noticed.

Great entries everybody, I was hoping to see some unusual ideas and here they are :)

So.. what is this large silhouette on the left? A mountain? Some ancient ruins? A sleeping giant? It's up to you.

Rules:
1. No resizing, flipping or rotating.
2. Minor outline alterations are allowed.
3. Only a part of the picture is subject for this competition (the large shape on the horizon - look below), but you are free to color the whole picture if you like =)

And if you don't want to color the full picture:

Good luck and have fun!

Edit: Trophies!

Well, I must say I'm glad you dropped the thought of tattooing the desing on the winner's body. Just imagine my wife finding this: "What do you ha--   WHAT? WHO IS STEVE??"

Oh, and the awards are hilarious :)

Actually, it was a very nice theme Misj', it's a pity for me that I didn't have time to make an entry.
And I think I know what you mean with the walkable areas in the lately Background Blitz editions. There were entries that, as beautifully drawn as they are, look a bit more like amazing wallpapers than backgrounds for an adventure game ;)
