Try using the dog (at the pier) to help the old woman in the cottage with her problem.

God damn, this movie sounds great! I've never seen it and I'm now thinking that maybe my otherwise fantastic childhood was ruined for not having seen this... Krull.

I think my "favourite lame movie" is hard to say because naturally, I don't think the movies I like are lame. I DO think that they're weird, perhaps had extremely low budgets and ridiculous plot and dialogue in a lot of areas - but it's the lovable kind of ridiculous. As much as I know so many of you will say "but these aren't lame!!1!!11!", you -know- what I mean. ^_- These are movies that I could argue are lame with no problems at all - it doesn't mean I don't love them to death.

I'd have to say (and these are also among my favourite movies EVER, regardless of lameness or time period):
Goonies
Labyrinth
Return to Oz
Never-Ending Story (1 only)
Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey (How can you not love a movie with God Gave Rock and roll To You in it?!)

...and to a lesser extent:
Breakfast Club
Masters of the Universe
The Lost Boys
Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure
All the Ewok movies (Caravan of Courage and... that other one... the obvious one)

That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

Yes, big public thanks to Dimitris for a very nice review ^_^ I'm so flattered! The whole issue is great, I'll definitely keep reading this in the future.

Seems like it's pretty clear that in general, the most hated ads are those for STDs and other sex-related ads.

General Discussion / Re:Australian/NZ accent
Tue 27/04/2004 05:06:27
I quite like it too, the NZ accent I mean. It used to sound completely weird to me but I'm getting used to it now. It's definitely not as bad as a lot of aussies make it out to be but... it IS very different to the Australian accent. As to it sounding more Brittish, I'd never picked up on that before.

I never thought Canadians said 'eh' much at all, but Americans seem to -always- say that about them. Kind of like how Americans think Australians finish everything off with "mate". ^_^

Blech, Heavenly Creatures... that movie freaked me out.

I always thought that doctor guy actually had some sort of medical problem. Not in a jeering sense - I really mean it. I don't know but it just seems like the way he moves... well, looks like some sort of involuntary movement problem. If not, then he's really strange.

I also hate any ad (and this seems to be a trend lately) that shows a bunch of stunt actors pretending to be rowdy youth doing something really, really stupid like surfing a wheelie bin down to the ocean or something. That shit doesn't look fun, it looks dangerous and ridiculous, and has absolutely ****-all to do with whatever sports drink of brand of clothing is being advertised.

Oh yeah, and that ad on late at night with the large breasted woman in the small yellow bikini type underwear on the bed, trying to entice you to call her. It's not an ad that annoys me so much but... how could ANYONE be fooled into thinking the narrator of the ad is her? People that work in the phone sex industry are more often than not fat, ugly chicks that can talk dirty. Not saying that's bad, it may be your thing, but my point is just that you'd have to be pretty thick to think that the voices belong to sexy, busty women lying on an elegant bed at night, waiting... waiting for the phone to ring.

General Discussion / Australian/NZ accent

For the first time after 21 years of watching American tv shows, I'm just starting to be able to pick up the difference between the American and Canadian accents.

So I was curious as to whether people outside of Australia and New Zealand can tell the difference between our accents? To us, it's about as obvious as you can get but I know how hard it can be when you're not used to hearing even one of the accents.

I was really happy when I found out this game had finally been released (you're waiting for a "but", right?).

It's a really neat game. Nice graphics style, nice MI references, great humour. Of course it was WAY too short but I know what it's like when you just have a cool little idea you want to get out without spending years on it. Definitely go for a sequel where you can take the game further.

I also noticed the problem of the package being for Jack Tan but it's been mentioned already. I think the choice of music was great and was used really well... buuuut, I'm picky. I guess I prefer to hear the game maker's own music. Have a go next time! ^_^

Overall, really cool and very nostalgic.

Wow... Patrick Stewart's a bit of a weirdo.

Honestly, the movie isn't a daytime soap about violence towards women. People who watch Tarantino's films know very well that he invents his own universe in his films. It's not set in reality, it's set in a kind of violent/cool reality, kind of like Loony Toons.

Sorry to constantly ask people this after bug reports but are you sure that you have the latest version? Check the readme file, it should say v1.2. The cricketer problem should be fine in the latest version. If you do have the latest, I'll go through and do some major checking again.

DG, you'll most likely know this one.

Those goddamn cheaply made ads about warehouse sales that are always narrated by a screaming maniac who never takes a breath. We get them every now and again in Brisbane advertising for a certain bunch of crap being sold cheaply at the convention centre (a very nice place really, not a warehouse at all). I just have to push mute when they come on, or change the channel until I'm -sure- it's over.

This is another one specific to Australia, but for months and months now, there's been an ad on tv advertising life insurance. It features this ugly house wife sitting down to a cup of coffee, talking about how her husband died and left them nothing. "Look, blah-de-blah was a good provider. He just didn't think about that sort of stuff."

THAT is the worst ad ever for me (that I can think of right now). I HATE it, HATE it, HATE it! I want to MURDER that woman and stuff her eyeballs in her coffee and tell her that she can't freaking act for shit and I bet her poor husband committed suicide after having to listen to her "Look,..."s and look at her freaking disgusting hair!

... Argh!

I also hate ads about raising awareness of STDs like the current "thrush" ads (I think it's thrush). They show all sorts of woman saying "I've had it", "I've had it too", "I got it ages ago", "I've got it right now!", "I'm getting it for my birthday!" (okay, the last couple are of my own creation). Then they reveal that lots of people have this particular STD. It's just stupid, and sick, and I hate the message. 'Lots of people have STDs so you shouldn't be ashamed about it. It's NORMAL!'

That's like saying getting secondary smoke induced lung cancer is okay. Sure, you don't have to feel like a freak because of it, but it's not something you say happily and proclaim loudly in a cafe! It's bad to have it! You're allowed to be sad about it and treat it silently, keeping some of your dignity. It should make you feel bad because you should be afraid of the consequences of unsafe sex!

Blah. SO many ads are awful. Lots are bad, but there are just those few that make you want to kill people.

Hmm, it's true that there are a lot of things that can be wrong in an adventure game. However, I totally agree with... whoever said it... that the rest of the game being great will completely make up for any slightly slow or annoying bits.

Still, the things I hate in general are...

- Mazes without the game giving you some sort of guide. Kyrandia I found okay, it was challenging without being really tiresome (at least the first time you played it, because you had that feeling of "ooh, what's gonna be in THIS room" and it did have plenty of interesting rooms in the caverns).

- Boring games. That sounds pretty obvious but really, I hate an adventure game without some sense of adventure. There are a lot of text adventures out there in particular that are like this. they start you somewhere and give you puzzles, but there's little or no plot and not much motivation for playing the game.

- Action sequences without a skip option. I don't mind them in a game, they can be fun (Astro Chicken was GREAT!) but you need to be able to skip them if you don't feel like playing them. I remember hating them in LSL3.

- Huge worlds with heaps of rooms and no map screen. It's very annoying going through 20 rooms to perform one action, then going all the way back.

- Completely illogical puzzles.

- Not being told what you're looking at in a Lucasarts styled game. I don't mind pixel hunting (like in the cave in Zak McKracken) as long as the game will reveal to me when the mouse is over an object.

- Not being told or given hints as to what something is called in a text-based adventure game. I remember being stuck for AGES in QFG 2 because I didn't know those things you use to get a fire going were called "bellows". Argh! There may have been a way to find that out in the game but it certainly escaped me when I first played it.

- Timed puzzles that just come out of the blue. You're happily playing a game and BOOM! All of a sudden you have 10 seconds you disarm a bomb that you didn't even know was there. If they ARE going to do that, the game has to have the option of going directly back to the spot before the timing starts.

- Games that are TOO scary. I just hate scary stuff, I want to be able to play a game and have fun without having trouble sleeping the next night. This is a personal thing with me though. I know a lot of others love horror games. 5 Days a Stranger was about all I could take of that sort of thing. That was okay because it was such a fun game to play and the graphics weren't too detailed.

Just where do you get the fatal error? I can probably fix it if you give me specific details on it.

kinoko, no I spoke to him before, the first inventory item i picked up was the "sunscreen" i think, are you reusing global ints or something? that could do it

I accidentally -did- reuse a global int at some point, but that was fixed. Have you got the latest version? If not, interaction with the mother would screw it up.

Hmm, did you give it to him before talking to him? You have to speak with him about his problem before you can give it to him. If not, I'm not sure what's happening (once again).

Thanks again, everyone ^_^

Wouldn't it be great if someone incorporated one of these riddles into an adventure game? A really difficult one, in such a way that you can't just guess the answer, you have to do various things to "work it out" in the game.

It's almost as if some of you have... no sense of humour! Was it removed surgically at some point?

I just think it's silly how serious some of this has become. I'm all for a good debate but this is a gaming forum, surely things should be a little more light hearted here. I light heartedly state that sex is great, and drugs are bad. I don't WANT to get involved in stupid statistic wars, I want to loudly proclaim my stance and then happily talk about smurfs, or lemmings, or why clouds look like kittens sometimes.

...My god! Why DO clouds look like kittens sometimes? Maybe that's where little kitten souls go after death...

Great, now you've made me sad.

EDIT: LOVE that touche picture! ^_^

In the last year of university, taking my fourth year of Japanese. Unemployed, though I make the occasional (and I mean OCCASIONAL) dollar from art commisions and comic sales. Actually, I don't think it ever translates to profit. Hope to go to Japan next year and become an english teacher, and possibly come back to Brisbane after that to get a degree in translation and interpretation.

I just found out that Vernita's actress is called Vivica A. Fox... "How appropriate!"
