You remember the MAGS competitions in 2004? All together 35 games entered the contests and offered a great range of amusement, humour and entertainment. To celebrate all the contestants and to bring all those games back to your minds and on your screens again here's "Maggies".

We don't want to judge about best graphics, best character or other best categories - there's already a famous award for doing this. "Maggies" just wants to know what's your favourite MAGS game 2004. It's up to you to decide what's most important: Graphics, gameplay, idea, interpretation of the MAGS rules, whatever...

The voting period will run two long weeks until January 14th.
Take your time to play all the games and decide in the end...

For voting please visit the MAGS site or make your choice right here:

Competitions & Activities / December MAGS

What is MAGS?
MAGS is a monthly competition for all amateur adventure game makers. The idea is to use AGS to create a game in under a month, following the rules set by the previous winner.

For more information please visit the Official MAGS Website

Why should I enter MAGS?
We're not here to tell you that you should enter MAGS, but merely allow it as a creative opportunity to help you work to a deadline, improve your skills, and generally as a good kick-start for the new comers (a.k.a n00bies).

MAGS is the perfect opportuninty to make a game, and the wonderful prize is to announce the net month's rules, and all competitiors get the game placed on the MAGS website.

MAGS is meant to be fun and is aimed at everyone, despite their skill. If you have poor art skills work on graphics, and vice-versa, as the voting is based on "favourite" games, and not the most artistic, you may get help for the competiton, but must not get anyone else to do any part of the game for you.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The AGS community is a very international community and this is what Sinitrena wants to celebrate with her guidelines for this month:

Internationality

- I want to see games that take place in at least two different countries. It should be possible to recognize these countries (for example if one of your countries is France you could use the Eiffel Tower somewhere in the background).

- Furthermore I want you to use one "country specific" item for each of these countries (e.g. Coca Cola in the USA).

- This game should have a translation in an other language than english as well or two different languages in-game (if you don't speack any other language you could write the words of the speech of one character backwards or something like that).

- Resolution: 320x200 at 16 bit colour.

No other restrictions...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All entries should be in by December 27th.

Please post a download link of your game entry to this thread, best with a screenshot. Thanks and good luck.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This time we have a mix of aussie's and chicken's ideas in a freestyle interpretation:

Theme - heroes never die

Actually heroes live forever but what happens if a superhero looses his life!?
He needs to find a way back! And that's what this month's competition is about.

Everything is possible, so the location could be heaven, perhaps hell or you could walk on earth as a ghost, whatever... Just find a way back to life as a superhero - the world needs you. Of course even being dead you could have special facilities, or they are different now, perhaps even lost. It's up to you...

What you should include:
- A cutscene (intro) showing the end of the superhero's life.
- A supervillan that wants to stop the superhero's effort of returning.

Some items, please use at least three of them for your inventory:
- apple
- balance
- bird
- cape
- chair
- chalk
- lamp
- socks
- soul
- tape

That's it. No other restrictions...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All entries should be in by November 25th.

Please post a download link of your game entry to this thread, best with a screenshot. Thanks and good luck.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After "Fantasy" we now come to this month's guidelines set by Rani a.k.a AGS-GD. No special items need to be included this time so you can be very free in what you create:

Theme - Conspiracy

There is something going on! You can barely notice it! But you are sure that something is going on behind your back that -in a way or another- is related to you and is not good!

- Any kind and length of conspiracy is acceptable:
It could be as simple as co-workers trying to give you some hard time with the boss by trying to steal your files â€"and how you'll stop them or revenge!- or it could be a deep "realistic" story of finding your wife stabbed to death, your finger prints all over the knife and your two close and dear neighbors claming they saw him/her do it â€"and how will you deal with this conspiracy and find out who really did it- or whatever may come to your mind.

Again, the main aspect is to make the player feel and know that something wrong is going on behind the scenes and force him to deal with it.

- The game has to feature at least three scenes.

All entries need to be in on October 25th.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Theme - Fantasy

Many adventure games are set on Earth, be it in the city, the countryside or a high-tech supercity. This month though, the games will be set in a fantasy world, an entirely different place with few similarities to the world as we know it.

There are many different ways you could approach this - you could go for the medieval Zelda-ish world with strange monsters and colourful personalities, elven kings and an endangered princess. Or maybe you could go for a Discworld-style game featuring strange characters with even stranger livings. You could mix the two ideas together or make a totally new approach.

Inventory items (at least two, plus any of your choice):
- A dragon's egg
- A magic potion
- A feather
- A fake crown
- An apple
- A chalice
- A crystal ball
- An anvil
- An arrow (the type used in bows)

Colour depth: Any
Resolution: Any

Remember that although it is a fantasy setting, you should try to keep everything believable (it's fine to make a huge dragon as it could exist, but a stick that explodes without a reason is just silly). Other than that, just use this opportunity to make a fun, creative game. It'd be great to see some original ideas coming about.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jaz and Foz decided not to submit their ideas for this new competition. On the other hand I think the source code of "Apocalype Vel" also is not yet available... Is it? So it's Minimi on his own who set this month's guidelines:

Theme - Animals

- As for most of the time humans are the character you play in a game for this time the main character must be an animal! Big, small - whatever you want it to be. It can also be an insect or a fish if that's what you want to ask...Ã,  :) All kind of ... animal.

- There's yet another guideline that perhaps is even more difficult to set up:
You must also make your own GUI system. So no standard graphics are allowed for this. You might want to stick to the standard GUIs that can easily be implemented using AGS but better try to invent and set up something new.

- No other restrictions
There's no list of items that need to appear in your game. But if you want to include some special things how about using elements that use an animal in their name like the famous "monkey wrench" or a "hot dog"...

All entries need to be in on July 26th.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As already announced this month there is a special competition. The very first MAGS competition started on June 2001, exactly three years ago. So with the change of the MAGS host, you remember Magintz left this position one month ago, I now want to bring back something that was tradition that long time ago when DGMacphee still hosted the contest: The winner announcement movie.

Therefore two characters should be created:
Max and Maggy
And that's the topic of this month's competition.

The winner this time won't set the new rules then, butÃ,  his/her characters will be used in every month's winner announcement movie then: They will talk about the entries and finally announce the results of the voting. So the characters need to be given away but not as open soure for everyone only for these MAGS movies!

Now these are the guidelines for MAGS competition 2004-06:
- Create two characters (Max and Maggy) with full walking animation (at least 4 directions)
- The game player must either control Max or Maggy all through the game and meet the other character during the game or act as both of them (think of two timelines or a switching interface like once in "A Better Mouse Trap")

- The game must be about MAGS - you decide on how... For example:
> Max wants to win MAGS and Maggy tries to stop him
> Max and Maggy want to find out about what's "behind" MAGS
> or whatever may come to your mind...

- You may want to include some MAGS stuff like the former entries, participants or even hosts (but it's not a must)

These rules give you a lot of freedom to think about a nice game and individual characters. So good luck for everyone.

All entries need to be in on June 28th.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Theme - Open Source Robbery

This theme may sound strange but it combines two main rules for this month's competition:

- To show new AGSers how to solve problems with the system this time your AGS code must be open source. So you have to upload both: Your game and the source code.

- The game must be about robbery. So it could be all you can imagine from insurance fraud to a planned bank robbery or a burglary.

- Also pick at least two items from the list below and include them somehow in your game:
lockpick
blueprint
night vision device
safe
alarm device
mask
black cape
headset
cutting torch
welding torch
gloves
watchman

no other restrictions

For the voting in the end only the game play is important as your code won't be checked for good or bad style. Anyway the source must be available.

---------------------------------------------------------------

All games in by May 27th.

Please post a download link of your game entry and its source code to this thread, best with a screenshot. Thanks and good luck.

During the last weeks I set up an easy to use content management system (based on PHP4.1 and flatfiles) that will be published under GNU/GPL license. It still needs some tweaking and smaller changes but the base is finished. The backend can handle multiple languages and therefore I'm looking for people that can translate the languagepack (existing in german and english at the moment) to other tongues. The pack file contains about 250 lines (short sentences or just words) and should not take really long to work on.
If you want to help please pm me and/or post here. Many thanks.

For further information (if needed) there's already a website about mayoco: manage your content.
Perhaps someone wants to use it when it's complete then... :)

Adventure Related Talk & Chat / MAGS surprise
Mon 21/04/2003 07:12:14
Some weeks ago I already mailed this to the MAGS team - now here it is for all:

Since I like the idea of the MAGS competition I thought about how to support this project. I had a look at the current MAGS site and saw that it's still under construction. Nowhere was a complete MAGS history, everything's spread on various pages and boards. So I had the idea to create a functional website for MAGS just the way that it was discussed in another thread here in the forums. Well, I searched for almost every MAGS related link on the internet, took screenshots, puzzled it all together and put the site to reality :)

Now you can have a look at it: http://www.mags-competition.tk

The site offers a database of all former MAGS guidelines, games and winners. It lists the current rules and an online voting system is also included. But I'm not sure if really every competition and game is listed yet. Also some winners and screenshots are missing because I couldn't find out. So it would be nice if you could tell or send me the missing rules, winner names and shots to complete the list.

Perhaps this site could be the official MAGS website - of course only if the MAGS teams agrees, else I'll run it just as an inofficial MAGS fan site.

Okay, that's it. I hope you all enjoy...
