Is the MAGS competition restricted to Adventures?

It's just as Gilbot V7000a already said: There are no restrictions according the "type" or genre of an entry unless it's stated in the rules of a particular month (though adventure games are preferred).

Is it allowed to use characters from an older game or do all the graphics have to be completely new?

Quote from: Mats Berglinn on Thu 02/02/2006 21:04:36
As far as know, I don't think that you can't reuse old characters. Right, Klaus?

Twice "no" means "yes"!? :) Well, it's always nicer to see new characters of course. Let's say it is not really forbidden to use premade walkcycles but it is recommended to create new ones. So if you find the time better create new characters and maybe they also fit better to the game then...

Are we allowed to go in pair? :) I would love to enter, but dont think i have the time to finish it on my own :-\

Quote from: Mats Berglinn on Wed 01/02/2006 17:37:11
I believe that you can team up as long as you do some work on the game and not do something like gather a bunch of guys, do nothing except telling orders and when's the game's finished you claim all the work. Tell me if I'm right or not.

Well, in general this is no team competition - "you may get help, but should try not get anyone else to do any part of the game for you". On the other hand we already had some team entries in the past and it all is not too strict here. But keep in mind that there should be some kind of "same conditions" for every participant.

So if you think it's fair to compair the final game with an entry that's created by just one person don't hesitate to start working together :)

What is MAGS?
MAGS is a monthly competition for all amateur adventure game makers. The idea is to use AGS to create a game in under a month, following the rules set by the previous winner.

For more information please visit the Official MAGS Website

Why should I enter MAGS?
We're not here to tell you that you should enter MAGS, but merely allow it as a creative opportunity to help you work to a deadline, improve your skills, and generally as a good kick-start for the new comers (a.k.a n00bies).

MAGS is the perfect opportuninty to make a game, and the wonderful prize is to announce the next month's rules, and all competitiors get the game placed on the MAGS website.

MAGS is meant to be fun and is aimed at everyone, despite their skill. If you have poor art skills work on graphics, and vice-versa, as the voting is based on "favourite" games, and not the most artistic, you may get help for the competiton, but should try not get anyone else to do any part of the game for you.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here we go with the new rules by buloght. Not too difficult and very free for interpretation:

Topic: Underworld

Generally anything fitting the topic is allowed. So make up your mind and think of a great story and location like for example:

- the real underworld
- some kind of society under the city
- a dwarven mine
- etc.

No further restrictions.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All entries should be in by February 24th.

Please post a download link of your game entry to this thread, best with a screenshot. Thanks and good luck.

So time for voting is over now and once again we face a winner.
At the beginning the votes for two entries counted up in a similar
way but then the wheels of the now second placed entry didn't
turn fast enough to keep in touch. Now we have the winning game:

Captain Bloodhook Flamebeard made the race in the end!
Congratulations to buloght and his game The Family Treasure.

Also many thanks to the other adventure game creators
for a nice start of the MAGS competition in 2006.

I'm voting for ...

You guys know how to vote? No need to post your choice in this thread as this voting only works by clicking the game in the list some posts before or by selecting your favourite game on the MAGS website. If there are problems with the online voting system please contact me via PM. Thanks.

Anyway you're of course free to post your comments. Maybe you could tell us your thoughts about all entries. Pros and cons of the games. What did you like, what not. In this case it's interesting how you compare the games - if this is possible at all.

True - but no need to hurry. Just cool down a bit - even if it's your first MAGS :)
And here we go:

For voting please visit the MAGS site or make your choice right here:

Veteran Shootout by mwahahaha
The Family Treasure by buloght
Lonely Night by Sinitrena
Infantry Division 1338 by Mordalles

Please vote only once and be sure to have played all games before sending your voice! Good luck to all participants.

We want results!
So you really want it? Okay... now the time for voting is over and we have a winner. Here we go.

Max and Maggie again are on stage and present the winning game of 2005 here.
If you don't want to download about 1MB just switch over to the MAGS site and check out the winner there.

Many thanks to all voting people and of course also many thanks to all last year's MAGS game authors.

You only need to post your entry here. That's all.

Is it alright if it's only one room?
Sure. You can also enter with a one-room-game as there are no restrictions set in the rules.

BTW, when I check the 'this month' section on the official MAGS site, I dont find anything about this competition
Yes, this is a special fact these weeks as there is also the voting for the favourite MAGS game of 2005 running right now. Sorry. As this is the one that ends earlier I put that competition there. The "history" area now also lists MAGS 2006-01.

Quote from: Hammerite on Tue 03/01/2006 20:37:13
do I post my entry HERE or what?
Correct. First you upload the game to some webspace of your choice. Then - as written above - you simply post the download link of your entry to this thread here before January 27th (best with a screenshot). That's all. Your game will then be added to the MAGS site and of course also to the list of games that people can vote for...

You remember the MAGS competitions in 2005? All together 29 games entered the contests and offered a great range of amusement, humour and entertainment. To celebrate all the contestants and to bring all those games back to your minds and on your screens again here's "Maggies".

We don't want to judge about best graphics, best character or other best categories - there's already a famous award for doing this. "Maggies" just wants to know what's your favourite MAGS game 2005. It's up to you to decide what's most important: Graphics, gameplay, idea, interpretation of the MAGS rules, whatever...

The voting period will run two long weeks until January 17th.
Take your time to play all the games and decide in the end...

For voting please visit the MAGS site or make your choice right here:

New year, new competition, new topic - this time by Bernie...

Topic: Old people

DESCRIPTION:
Your game should tell a small story of someone old. Be it gramps trying to get those pesky kids off his lawn or granny solving a murder mystery in the neighbourhood, anything goes! Old people face problems we wouldn't even think about while we're still young, so there should be plenty of room for interesting ideas.

REQUIREMENTS:
-Your main character needs to be old (65+) and retired.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All entries should be in by January 27th.

Please post a download link of your game entry to this thread, best with a screenshot. Thanks and good luck.

So we had a really long time for counting all your votes now and compared to other competitions a lot of you made a choice... Actually it's a very clear result in the end:

The winning story features an elve. Oh that's not much of a hint as it was this month's topic. Now what else can we say!? The winner is not Apprentice, it is

Cedric and the Revolution by Bernie

Congratulations to Bernie and also many thanks to Arcangel and Erenan for their nice games.

Ouch, many thanks for this information! I added a short script there months ago in March but noone seemed to have problems so far - at least noone reported :( After a short look on it I saw the code actually was buggy, but now it should run fine for everyone. Sorry for the incommodities and thanks again.

Sure. The mentioned screenshot is later put on the MAGS site as a preview of the game. But as long as nothing is finished and the game development is still in progress all graphics are welcome.

Quote from: lo_res_man on Tue 06/12/2005 20:30:52one question, can I upload on jan 3?
Oh, I'm sorry but January 3rd really is much too late - the next competition should already start on January 1st. Is it possible to help you in some other way to see your game being published earlier?

Here we go with the new guidelines set by BaRoN...

Topic: Elves

DESCRIPTION:
Elves are "little creatures of folklore with magic power, often mischievous or malicious, but sometimes kind and helpful." - Websters Dictionary.

This theme is open to broad interpretation: it can easily be related to (certain seasonal festivities) or not as you see fit.

REQUIREMENTS:
1) a bouncing ball
2) a pinching crab
Both of these must be included in the game, but how you do so is up to you (i.e. backgrounds, objects, inventory, NPCs, etc...)

3) Included prominently in the plot there must be some detail of the social structure of elvish society. Elves being a fictional - or at least a very elusive - race, this requirement can be exercised as creatively as you wish.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All entries should be in by December 24th, so we can get them as xmas gift. :)

Please post a download link of your game entry to this thread, best with a screenshot. Thanks and good luck.

We finally reached the end of the voting period.

So here's the result of this month's competition:
Both entrants collected a number of votes but in the end there's
a clear winner now: BaRoN and his entry The Paramecium Complex.

Congratulations and thanks to both for joining the contest. :)
