You can still vote by using either one of the links listed above or by visiting the voting area on the MAGS site.

The voting is different from some other contests here as it is based on an online voting system. So the result and chosen games are hidden from public. It's also open for people who visit the ags forums just as a guest and do not have a login.

I hope I'm not too late!!!!!!
It's still November 25 here, and I've been madly working to get this done on time.  Since I don't see any notice of the contest being closed I'm going to go ahead and post it
You're completely right: As long as there's no notice you still can submit.
Actually I hoped for yet another entry but the deadline is gone for a good time now, so let's start the voting:

For voting please visit the MAGS site or make your choice right here:

The Paramecium Complex by BaRoN
MOTLPAA by Radiant

Please vote only once and be sure to have played all games before sending your voice! Good luck to all participants.

I think that people have lost interest in MAGS because they think that it's obvious that Wretched will participate and win again.
I don't think that this is obvious. Check out the last competitions: There are some posting saying "I'm in" and similar announcements but none of these were made by Wretched. He just posted his entry close to the deadline's end. So noone actually could have known about his submission.

Then I could have some change of winning too.
You - and all other participants - always have a chance to win :)

What is MAGS?
MAGS is a monthly competition for all amateur adventure game makers. The idea is to use AGS to create a game in under a month, following the rules set by the previous winner.

For more information please visit the Official MAGS Website

Why should I enter MAGS?
We're not here to tell you that you should enter MAGS, but merely allow it as a creative opportunity to help you work to a deadline, improve your skills, and generally as a good kick-start for the new comers (a.k.a n00bies).

MAGS is the perfect opportuninty to make a game, and the wonderful prize is to announce the next month's rules, and all competitiors get the game placed on the MAGS website.

MAGS is meant to be fun and is aimed at everyone, despite their skill. If you have poor art skills work on graphics, and vice-versa, as the voting is based on "favourite" games, and not the most artistic, you may get help for the competiton, but must not get anyone else to do any part of the game for you.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yet another ruleset by Wretched and this time we go for a world record. Or some kind of...

Topic: Superlatives

Your game must try and set a world record in adventure gaming, e.g.
- biggest monster ever,
- most difficult puzzle ever,
- stupidest player character ever,
- etc.
It's up to you about what superlatives could appear or take place...

Inventory/scripting must include a functional, working stylophone or mini piano.

More information about stylophones

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All entries need to be in by early November 25th.

Please post a download link of your game entry to this thread, best with a screenshot. Thanks and good luck.

rhape and Pablo: You know I didn't talk of you with my "I'm in" statement...

Anyway, we have a very surprising winner this time!
"Three times on top, please don't vote again..."
Okay this wouldn't be great but maybe we should think about something like this...
On the other hand: Next month we'll face more entries than ever. Right!? Well, probably not.

The winner is Wretched and his entry Zugzwang. Congratulations. I guess with your numerous submissions your chances are good to also earn the title of favourite MAGS game of the year...

Wretched: I guess you know what to do now, the same procedure as last ... month.

Okay now. Let's do something crazy, something that has never been done before: Let's extend the deadline for 23 hours. Sounds like fiction but it's real ;)

Please submit your entries within the next 23 hours (see timestamp of this posting), so we have at least the weekend for the voting. Not a really long time but better than voting without a choice :)

So please submit your games within the next 24 hours (see timestamp of this posting) then the voting will begin.

This month with Wretched's new rules we refer to the famous board game of kings...

Topic: Inside Chess

All NPC's (non player characters) in the game must be or be derived from chess pieces, either by occupation, shape or characteristics.
Note: Just calling someone Mr Bishop, is not sufficient, unless he is a Bishop.

As in different languages the functions and names of the pieces are slightly different it is also possible to use horse instead of knight and runner instead of bishop.

The game should include some sort of chess puzzle, e.g. an actual chess problem or just something using the knight's move.

So don't go for a chess simulation or a game where characters play the board game! Think more of being "inside" the chess game - anyway the theme of your game is free except the already mentioned rules.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All entries need to be in by early October 27th.

Please post a download link of your game entry to this thread, best with a screenshot. Thanks and good luck.

No comments!?  ???

Anyway we finally reached the end of the voting. Time is over and we have a clear winner - and a novelty:
For the first time in MAGS history the winner of the competition won with rules set by himself. It was often asked if it's allowed to take part with one's own guidelines and the answer's always "yes".
Now this time it actually happened:
The last month's winner did not only take part - he even won again :)

Congratulations to the winner Wretched and his entry Crave!

I guess I'm just dim, but is it acceptable to make comments before voting is over, or should we wait?
I guess everythings okay with you. :)
The story goes like this: Last month Henryhouse suggested to make comments on the entries after the vote. Sure it's best to start these postings after the winner is clear but last time the thread was closed just some moments later - when the new competition started. So there was no chance to post more comments... That's why I included this request right to the voting infos.
So I'd say go ahead and let's see what you think about the games...

I guess all downloads are available now, so here we go...

For voting please visit the MAGS site or make your choice right here (only use one of these two ways of voting - nothing else allowed):

Crave by Wretched
Chalks Quest by Pablo

Please vote only once and be sure to have played all games before sending your voice! Good luck to all participants.

As suggested by Henryhouse one month ago I'd also like to ask for posting comments about the games saying what you liked and what you didn't like about the entries.

Okay, I really understand the difficulties of a 28k modem. So take your time. When your game is up the voting will begin. No need to hurry - your game is "in". :)

Anyone know of a good ftp/upload manager like getright is at downloading, that copes with disconnections?
LeechFTP - the application I'm usually using -  tries to resume broken uploads.
Also Filezilla offers a resume upload functionality. Maybe one of these clients works for you. Both applications are freeware. Good luck...

but I doubt they'd end the comp until they have one game at the very, very, very, VERY least.
The very, very, very, VERY least is in about 8 hours from now :) So there's still a chance for all to enter the competition.

But Abisso - if you say it's only about 12 more hours that you'd need to finish the game please give me a sign! If it's days you don't need to think about it ;)

Since the ending-date of the competition isn't precise, I prey, and ask, if it can at least be in the 26th afternoon.
Usually the end is posted in detail about 48 to 24 hours before. The italian afternoon will be okay :)

EDIT: Time is up now!
Please post your entries within the next 21 hours (see timestamp in the "last edit line"). Then the voting will begin.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The new MAGS rules yet another time go a very different way: They define the main character...

Topic: Chalk

Wretched's idea behind the rules is that the main character should be simple to draw, allowing lots of good animations.

- The main character must be a chalk figure come to life. This could be a police murdered corpse outline trying to find the murderer, or a school kids drawing on the playground or a blackboard. Or even a chalk hill carving thing. Other ideas may come to your mind.
- The main character must have at least one special ability, e.g. elastic arms, flight, metamorphosis, whatever.
- You must include at least 3 different animations (these animations do not include the standard cycles like walking, talking, thinking,...). More are always welcome of course.

There are no other restrictions for this month!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All entries should be in by early September 26th.

Please post a download link of your game entry to this thread, best with a screenshot. Thanks and good luck.

Yes. I made them available after your request. Usually they are kept hidden.

16 votes is a shame for the ags community.
Quote from: Henryhouse on Wed 31/08/2005 16:03:05
16 votes doesn't tell you very much.
Actually this is an average number of votes! A lot more voices were counted in the early months of the online voting system but it was missused for cheats like "direct voting links" and so the "vote-on-2-clicks" system was added. This also prevents from "accidential votes" and works fine so far. Maybe we see more voices again when it's getting colder outside ;)

Quote from: Henryhouse on Wed 31/08/2005 16:03:05
Anyway, I think the people who played the games should post comments about them saying what they liked and what they didn't like about each one.
I think that's a really great idea! Of course it's also possible to post comments in the "Completed Game Announcements" but it's nice to see comments about the different game bundled here. You made a good start with your short reports. Thanks for this idea.

Maybe the administrators can keep this thread open for some more days so that we can share just some more impressions!?

Do we get to find out the number of votes for each game?
I first wanted to write a long text here now concerning the history of the MAGS online voting system... But to make it short: As requested you can have a look at the results including the number of votes until the new rules are posted in the voting section of the MAGS website.
