Critics' Lounge / Re:Background technique test

What are skirting boards????

Well, anyhow, they're boards that go around the base of the wall. I think they're supposed to stop draughts and mice. They're usually painted a different colour to the wall.

Yeah, the background would set a nice style for a game. Unless it's a monkey island style game :)

Do americans having skirting boards?
Does Tim Schafer have skirting boards???
I don't think I could love him quite the same, if he didn't have skirting boards. Dude, only satan worshippers don't have skirting boards. Isn't that right, Boyd?

PS. Try cartoon shading the GF poster so that it fits in. It's only that is high-res Manny is 3D looking and the rest of the room is low-res 2D

Try adding things about the room with different colours:

Lamp, light, skirting boards, mirror, chair, vase, coffee table, a few magazines, some empty crisp packets, sprite cans, video cassette cases, newspaper, pencils, pens, stains, etc.,. They'll balance the room more and add more colour and variation, and make it more interesting to look at.

I took in the entire room at one glance. Whereas in games such as Monkey Island and DOTT, there are plenty of background objects so that there's always something new that you didn't see the last time.

The background itself is good, but the smudged painting clashes a bit with the rest of it, which is quite sharp.

Finally... nice choice of posters! I should get around to playing Grim Fandango some time.

Critics' Lounge / BR opening theme... C+C :)
Sun 14/09/2003 15:30:33
Music isn't my forte, (Neither is religion, that's why I failed it) but anyway, this is the opening theme to Beyond Reality, so it's pretty important that everybody thinks it's okay. So, C+C, pretty please!

The ending part (The very quiet part) is a tiny bit off time but that's okay because I may be lengthening it slightly, depending on the finished cutscene.

Oh yeah, the opening sequence goes like this... Logo, tiny bit of a cutscene, a few credits. Then another song will continue for the duration of the rest of the cutscene.

General Discussion / Re:the diet...
Sun 14/09/2003 15:19:42
Have a large breakfast in the mornings, have three meals but try not to snack on unhealthy stuff. And do not eat after 6am. And then go to bed nice and early.

It's simple, easy to stick by, and healthy. And you will lose weight.

I used to do this. Until you know, I started commuting. And I leave the house at 6:30 and get back at... 6:30. So I can't. You know, because it would be impossible...

EDIT: Oh, BTW, this isn't a diet, so much as a healthy diet. If you know what I mean. It's healthy to go to bed early, unhealthy to sleep on a full stomach, healthy to have a big breakfast, healthy to eat three meals etc.,. There's a big difference. I wouldn't recomend dieting.

Oh, yeah! That's why I used to snitch on people loads when I was little. People thought it was just because I was a mean little girl, but it was actually because I was practising telling tales.

What's a Dev Diary?  ???

I nearly abandoned BR for this one other project, and then I smacked myself in the face and told myself I could only start the other one when BR WAS FINISHED.

Oh, yeah, and I find my art styles differ from room to room. A room I designed earlier, may be a different style to one I designed this week. So when a person designing the backgrounds for one project may realise another different art style s/he likes, s/he may start a new project to accomodate it.

Just a theory.

Yeah... see, I didn't know where to post this, so it might as well go here. I'm too lazy to find a REAL technical forum for scanners. So anyway, I figured you guys might be able to work this out.

I got my UMAX Astraslim SE scanner, like, four months ago. It worked great. It has no power lead; it gets it from the USB port. Anyway, here's the thing: now it's STOPPED WORKING.

I haven't used it for about four weeks since we moved house. It's definately the right lead, and the green power light is on. It detects the new hardware when you plug it in. It SHOULD be fine... except when you try to scan, it gives an error:

"TWAIN Error!"
"Failed to open the TWAIN driver."

I reinstalled the driver and restarted, and it still gives the error. I don't think I changed any settings since I last used it or anything. It's so incredibly frustrating. So, um, anybody got any bright ideas?... And m0ds, SHUT UP!!!![/b]

EDIT: Guess I should mention I'm on XP.

EDIT 2: I reinstalled the driver... or did I??? Maybe I only reinstalled... the SOFTWARE!!! Huh. Where do I put these retarded files? What's wrong with me? Somebody do this for me. Or did I? I don't know. What? Why isn't there a help file for this?

EDIT 3: Oh, yeah, GREAT answers in the troubleshooter, UMAX! This is the question that everybody wants to know the answer to: Can’t find a power switch! THERE ISN'T ONE, YOU ASS.

EDIT 4: M0ddddddssssssssssss :(

EDIT 5: Oh... wait... it's working... really really SLOWLY... if I do it manually from the control panel. It won't work if I use the Scan Panel Software.

EDIT 6: Okay, so it's like, something to do with the software. I broke the software! Not the scanner! m0ds, I did not break my scanner!!!!! Ha ha ha! I did break the essential software though, and now I need to know how to fix that, instead.

EDIT 7: This happened to the other three printers, before I broke them in various grisly ways. Is this a bad omen? I think I'll sleep with the scanner under my pillow tonight, just in case.

EDIT 8: Rock a bye baby, on the tree top... when the wind blows the cradle will...OH MY GOD!!! MY BABY! MY SCANNER! IT OVERHEATED UNDER THE PILLOW! WHAT HAVE I DONE!??!

EDIT 9: I think I'll start doing something worthwhile with my time. But yeah, the scanner software. Not working.

1. They start off with a new idea that really excites them, but over time they have worked on it so much that the excitement dulls, and they have another, 'better' idea. So they start on the new project with all the determination they had with the first.

2. They have died, and no longer can avail of the keyboard and mouse

3. It's not working out the way they planned. They had DOTT style pictures in their head, but now it's turned out more like KQ1... on hash. So they give up out of shame and self pity.

4. They release a demo, it gets awful reviews... so they start over.

5. They are newbies, who take on five projects all at the same time, and spend their time posting here instead of working on their game.

How dare thee refer to it as WEBSITE, you scoundrel!

Fiddlesticks! Everybody knows it's "PLEER BLURGER".

I think Apprentice and PB had really great music. Also that short game, wassitcalled? ....The Journey Home. That had good music. Well, it was monkey island music. But I mean the part in the cell. Was that some sort of iMuse?
#1753
Actually, due to a bizarre turn of events, it's not. I'll fix that later. And explain later. It's really bizarre.
#1754
All comments appreciated muchly :)

There are a lot of bugs.

As for him going on... yeah I thought the BR bit was a bit too much, especially as it doesn't even actually make any SENSE. But, the reason he went on for SO long is, so the music was in time with the conversation. See, I made the music first. I'll shorten the music for the final game, and then use the original transcript.

Also your point about the plot... I did intend for them to have a motive. It's not clearly explained in the demo at all. Here it is:

The nightmare creatures are creations of nightmares, basically the Toxic Waste of the mind. The rest of the dream world partition off these poor creatures, who were born from bad things and don't understand the difference between good and bad. They're banned from leaving the Toxic Dump, the gloomiest, murkiest part of the Dream World.

Mort wants to liberate the people of the Toxic Dump, and in doing so he plans to gain access to the Real World. Except to the Dream World, they think the REAL world is a dream.  This will be explained later in the game as a type of weapon which he plans to use to liberate his people.

However, his people don't trust him, and I won't say whether there's a reason for this or not.

So Mort seemingly only wants to free the Toxic Dump, and while he may have other agendas, he also doesn't realize that it will contaminate the rest of the Dream World.

See, there's a little bit of reasoning in there.

I didn't use the intro screen because it sucked.

Points taken.. although the problem with the hotspots was something I had actually taken into account but like WVG said, the deadline sort of sucked it. Also, the puzzle was easy because I had to change it a little... otherwise it would have spanned over the other World Map areas, and they're not ready yet, y'see. For instance, the moth wasn't supposed to be THERE.

I'm relieved the humour isn't that bad. It looks awful to me.

And as for it being short... well, you all heard the problems I had trying to get even that much script working. If I'd have made it longer, I might have exploded.

Thanks everybody :) I can safely say I'm a little bit relieved.

Ha ha ha... how on earth did it remind you of that? *innocent*

Well done :) I will enter all tune competitions from now on, methinks they are fun

Yeah, see, I got it... but here's the thing...

I don't understand what I'm doing wrong. I set it up, the game runs fine... but when he gets the two items, (each time I add 1 to INT THREETASKS...) it doesn't turn on that dialogue option. I must be doing something really stupidly wrong somewhere. Here's what I have.

function repeatedly_execute(int threetasks) {
if (threetasks==2){
SetDialogOption(10,5,0);
}

Then, I have this at the very top of the room script:

// room script file
int threetasks;

Then, every time Ian picks up/does one of the things he's supposed to, I have...

if (threetasks <3) {
   threetasks += 1;
 }

Which I changed to

threetasks += 1;

Which also didn't work.

I don't get error messages, it just doesn't seem to add anything to int threetasks :(
I checked that the dialogue option I was specifying was a real dialogue option and everything, that I didn't get it mixed up with another conversation. I must be not understanding part of the scripting. Help, before I lie!
