General Discussion / Re: Blue Skies

There are a lot of things I want to do right now:

1.  I would like to move out of my apartment and into a house, even if I'm renting.  I'd like to own a car that isn't rust-ridden, isn't full of dents and holes, doesn't need severe engine and transmission work, and doesn't make loud squealing noises when it's running.  But I simply cannot afford this, because my job sucks.  I've been trying to get a better job, but I can't seem to get one, because I have no high school diploma yet, and thus, employers don't seem to want to take me seriously, no matter how much I sport the "go-get'em" attitude.  I should just go back to school again, but I don't have the time or the ambition.  Time isn't going to magically slow down for me for the next six months for me to go back to school and graduate (yes, I'm that close).  I know it sounds more like an excuse, but I really don't have the time.  My current job is sucking up most of my time.  If I could just get a decent job, so that I can make enough not to have to scrape change together for gas to get to work or for food, I feel like THEN I can sit down and think about school.  I've even applied for some really shitty factory jobs, but, nevertheless... I just don't know what to do.

The reason why I want this is because I think a lot about where I thought I'd be five years ago, and this isn't it.  I look at my three best friends, and I'm severely jealous of them; Paul makes $16.00 an hour and has his own house, a decent car; Matt has a good job, and umpteen trucks, cars, motorcycles, snowmobiles and is talking about getting his own house; Travis is in the Navy, and although he's in Iraq right now, he's pretty much set for life as far as I can tell because of the military.  I'm older than all three of them, and I look at myself, and I'm ashamed of my financial situation and what I've got to show for my 23 years of life.  I know I should just be grateful that I have a roof over my head, and food in my fridge, but...  I just wanted more out of life than this.

2.  I've been wanting to start writing my own music.  I've tried finding a band to join, but don't really have time for that either, and I can't deal with uncooperative band members like I've had in the past.  So, recently, I decided to just do it on my own.  But the reason why I'm not doing this is because I don't have the necessary tools and such to do it.  I've got 2 guitars, and a crappy music composing program.  I also just can't concentrate on writing the music, it's like I have writer's block or something.  I don't know what to do fix this problem, but it really frustrates me.  All I want to do is make music and share it with people.

Sometimes I wonder if I'm just not chasing my stupid high school dream of being a musician in an effort to hang on to my childhood.  I don't know why I'm chasing it, because I highly doubt it's going to happen.

So, anyway, I deem those two as perfectly realistic goals, yet unattainable because... I dunno... because I suck?

Well, you know... I read somewhere once that if you take a soft, clean rag, and spray some WD-40 onto it, then wipe your strings down with it, your strings will last longer... or something like that...

Alright, cool.  Thanks. :)

I wanted a guitar equipped with a floyd rose, so that I could do the harmonic squeals, deep tremolo dives, and the super high stretches (it won't go quite as high as I'd like it to, so maybe I'll have to do a little shaving on the bridge cavity  ;) ).  With my strat-style guitar, I can do the deep trem-dives, but you and I both know that when you do that with a strat, the strings usually go out of tune fast.

I guess the only reason why I asked is to see if there was anyway to keep the guitar from going out of tune...?  ???  Like I said before, I'm new to these kinds of bridges.  I've played one or two other guitars with these that belonged to other people, but this is the first time I've actually owned one, and I really don't know too much about them.

Some of you may have seen the pic of my new guitar.  For those of you who haven't:

As you can see, it's equipped with a floyd rose bridge, and as with most floyd rose-equipped guitars, it's also got a locking nut on it.

I don't know too much about these kinds of bridges, and I don't want to mess anything up by monkeying with it.  I've tried Google to find an answer to my problem, but I get a bunch of pages full of guitar-tech gobbledygook.

My problem is this:

As far as I know, floyd roses and locking nuts are supposed to help your guitar stay in tune better.  When I brought the guitar home from the pawn shop, it was perfectly in tune.  But over the past month since I've had it, the strings have been slowly falling out of tune.  I've tightened the fine-tuners on the bridge to the point where I can't adjust them any farther.  So I opened up the locking nut, and I tuned the strings, then put the nut back on.  Why are the strings going out of tune?  I do use the tremolo arm excessively, could that have something to do with it?

Also, when I tune the strings, some of the strings (for the most part, the low E string) won't stay perfectly in tune.  The needle on my tuner indicates that the notel goes sharp, then goes flat, and then sharp again, and so on.  It doesn't stay directly on the note.

Any suggestions?

Actually, I think some people (...some who have been here for years...) start some pretty retarded posts themselves, it's not just the newbies.  Plus, it's all relative how pointless a post is.

I usually only start a new topic if I have a question that can't be answered by "Googling" something.

EDIT: Nevermind that last part I posted before.  It's dumb.

Check out my new toy:

And, of course, I have to take a picture of myself showing off:

Now I finally get to take my long overdue place in the guitar club.    8)

And who wants to learn to play some sad crap hit by No Doubt...

Did I mention the second song I learned to play was "Spiderwebs" by No Doubt? *chuckles*

Anyway, to start off with just pick an easy song and just keep practicising it until you can play it fluently...

"Walk, Don't Run", or "Louie, Louie" comes to mind.  XD  I drove my mom nuts with those two.

Afflict:  If you decide to pick up any books on learning guitar, I would not suggest and of the "...For Dummies" or "The Idiot's Guide To..." books.  There really is no way that you can cram such a broad subject such as learning to play guitar into one book, and IMO, they really aren't worth the money, they're also a little bit difficult to follow.  I would probably suggest "The Guitar Grimoire" series.  They have many different titles covering many different subjects.  There's a chord dictionary, a book on scales and modes, exercises, fingerpicking, rythm, etc.

I just wanted to let you know about that so that you don't end up wasting your money, like this one guy I know did... okay, it was me... :P

Also, Guitar World and Guitar One are a few good magazines for hints and tips, plus they come with tabs.

Dude! I want that!

I swear, if he starts another new thread about his first pube (with pics), I will choke him.

One more thing: I found that the best way to learn how to play guitar... *looks around*... is to teach yourself.  Just experiment.  Try to play a song you hear on the radio without looking up the notes for it.  I did that when I first started playing, the first song I ever learned to play was "Walk Like A Camel" by Southern Culture On The Skids.  I actually surprised myself.  It doesn't matter if you're playing it wrong or not, as long as you're content with the result.

It may be extremely frustrating at times, but this way you don't have somebody leaning over you telling you, "No, you're doing that wrong.  You should do it my way, etc."

MXTabs.  You can look there for notes on pretty much any song you can think of.  You can also find a lot of notes about learning to play guitar there on the forums too.

Hmm...

... what are... these... "zombies"... you speak of?

Alright, quit twisting my arm.  I'll download it and give it a try.

Was doing some research on how to add more detail to isometric pixel art, and found this: http://rhysd.syntesis.org/tutorial/.

Hello, MissyChelle (do you mind if I just call you Missy?  Or, how about Chelle?...)

I really like the look of this game, especially the isometric backgrounds.  They're very detailed.

Keep up the good work.
