If you must quote Monty Python, Rincewind, at least get it right!

Something about the doors and sign of the bank look unreal... kinda washed-out. Maybe that's what you mean by a different style, though!

Well...

I'm only making it as a present for my wife... and I only started on Monday. I'm only making it available to others so they can enjoy it if they like... I don't really mind if others don't like the lack of animation or walking views. I really didn't have time to do much more drawing, hence the re-use of the first game stuff and the lack of animations.

This is also why there's only 1 puzzle

Were there any Simpsons in-jokes in this one? Or the last one? The point of the Simpsons in the first one was that my wife says that I watch it too much :(

I'm pleased with the Star Wars scroller, though. The music, unfortunately, I can't take credit for.

I don't want to over-promote, but...

The most eagerly anticipated sequel in the history of.... er... history!

After the critical acclaim (rating of 4 on the games page) and comments like "cute" for the first game, SuperScottishHero productions have spared every expense to produce a sequel game for Mother's Day. Featuring a StarWars scroller described already in the Tech Forums as "unoriginal" and such advances features as music and dialog, you won't want to download this game and try it.

"Sierra interface" is all the documentation you need!

Feel free to us it in Rebel Spy if you like, Darth. The tricky bit is getting the text to slow down appropriately as it goes into the background. I'm not sure what should really be used for perspective calculations: maybe a square root would be better, but the reciprocal I use seems close enough. The numbers will certainly need some adjustment: for a 640x480 (your background size, I see) I would suggest using crawl start at 700, recip=350000, and if your lettering lines are 64 pixels high, bring in each new line after 102 repeats... but its trial and error until you get the speed you like (you can also change the game speed, which might be easier)

Delta, I am using the scroller as a joke... the game is for my wife for Mother's day and is very short so an overblown intro is ironic (she also loves Star Wars)

edit: here's the game announcement thread:

I'm confused now: are you saying that its bad:

a) That I have created something that looks like the Star Wars opening text crawl
b) That someone might copy my code snippet to make their own text crawl when I'm happy for them to do so
c) That I have copied someone's code (I haven't, by the way)
d) Something else

Hey, I was just sharing the script in case anyone else wanted to do it: you don't have to be abusive!

I have made a star wars opening titles-type scroller. You will need:

1. A room with a starfield background and a continuously scaled walkable area (this example was 1 to 100% with the walkable area taking up 3/4 of the screen, vertically)
2. "Characters" for each line of text, with the views/sprites of the text to be scrolled as graphics with the perspective already applied (easy in PSP) (I have 4 lines here, characters 1 to 4)
3. This script:

$$$!$$$ ROOM room1.crm
$$$!$$$ RS
// room script file
int crawl=400;
int recip=84000;

function room_a() {
  // script for room: Repeatedly execute
crawl+=1;
character[1].y=recip/crawl;
if (crawl >= 494) {
  character[2].y = recip/(crawl-94);
  character[2].room = 1;
}
if (crawl >= 588) {
  character[3].y = recip/(crawl-188);
  character[3].room = 1;
}
if (crawl >= 682) {
  character[4].y = recip/(crawl-282);
  character[4].room = 1;
}
if (character[1].y < 82) {
  NewRoomEx(2, 160, 150);
}
}

This example was in a 320x200 room... you can change the settings of crawl and recip to change the speed and the initial X position. The sprites for each line of text were about 32 pixels high (and 320 wide)

EDIT:
You can see this now in my new game: Adventures of Princess Marian II: Mother's Day

Jeruy hatches an evil plan to eliminate the Jerry thread by letting it slip on to page 2. Jerry foils this plan by hiring someone who should have better things to do to post a new message. Meanwhile...

Relising that to avenge Jeray, Jeray's killer must die, Sadatamircadamhuzzadabuhalibudud changes his name to Jeroy so that he doesn't know where to find himself. George Bush decides that the Jerryizer dental hygiene system is a weapon of mass destruction and orders them all destroyed. Meanwhile...

Jerry realises that due to a mix-up, Jerry Springer is not dead but rather Rosie O'Donnell: Rednecks everywhere rejoice. The hungry crazed rat has Jerry's lovechild which looks exactly like... Rosie O'Donnell. Meanwhile...

Actually, I now realise that it may be more kosher to make it beef... oh no, that's a sacred cow!

How about a chicken tikka masala sandwich? That might offend followers of the great Linda McCartney

Myself, I'd go for cheese and pickle... then the joke will be really cheesy.

As for explaining the joke, you could have a dialog between Lucy and God and Lucy leaves because the joke is so cr@p. Meanwhile, the screen pans over the sandwich...

How to draw "nothingness"...

Nothingness looks like: A Ham Sandwich...

It's an old joke: "There's nothing, quite like a ham sandwich"

There's also great oppurtunity for understatement jokes:
BIG BUILD UP MUSIC...
(Charton Heston voice) And then... God made... The Earth...
(silly finger in mouth popping sound as the earth pops out of nothing)

I think most folks took my post in the spirit that was intended. They've got public service radio adverts on all the time for the website I mentioned and it was in my mind as the discussion on Sasha's problems progressed. Helm rightly pointed out that many people here are not real people to others and that got me thinking. Of course, if you're under 16 then you should always treat any chatroom people you haven't met already as strangers in real life as a precaution, no matter how long you've known them online. It also unliekly that there are any kids here with the wherewithal to jet off to foreign countries on their own anyway!

So, I know that there were previous mittens and didn't want to cast aspersions on anyone, especially Andail who has done so much for the AGSers even though he didn't get any Academy Awards this year.

I don't want to accuse anybody of anything, even those trying to entice young poeple out to remote cottages :)

Seriously, though, you young uns out there should be careful of any meeting organised on chatrooms. Check out:

I like!! And knowing the characters are based on real people makes it even better!

Thanks! But I'd like to point out that the Unicorn and Bad Guy are not based on real people... any similarity to persons living or dead is entirely coincidental  :)

And what makes you think that I'm not just pretending to have a wife, so as I don't seem to be just a sad geek?  ;)
#5539
You think that the backgrounds are good? Wow! ;D

And yes, my wife thinks I watch too much Simpsons. And she doesn't let me see Futurama at all! Darn! :(

I only wish I could work out a good way to stop walking thought the wardrobe door. Oh, and if I had the time to do some more animations...and some sound effects... and music...

Ah, so it took you 36 minutes to finish it, then? Or are you referring to my picture on the left?
