Thanks for the votes, gang.

The winning game by a landslide is:
The Sphinx of Time (by Babar and jfrisby).

Well done dudes. I'll be in touch.

It's looking great. Best of luck.

That does sound like a very plausible solution. But it seems like you're still not 100% sure. Have you asked around to see if anyone has found two sets of earbuds in their jacket?

I'd be pretty annoyed knowing that someone found my earbuds and didn't make an effort to return them. Maybe you can do a bit of detective work and find out who has got the most similar jacket to yours.

In fact, are you certain the jacket you put on at the end of the day was yours? Maybe you had put the buds in the right jacket but someone had left with yours leaving theirs in the closet, and you didn't realise it was someone else's.

Hi all. It's still early but I'm in the process of rigging up the voting etc. for MAGGIES (Best MAGS game of the year). Ideally, I want to be able to kick this off as soon as we have a winner for December.

As preferable as it is for voters to have played as many of the games as they could before voting, I know this is difficult, if not impossible, for most people. That's why in the last couple of years, I've tried to include gameplay videos of some of the entries. That way, voters can at least see each game in action and get some idea of its merits.

Last year I was able to record a few myself, but I am struggling for time these days and would like to invite anyone reading to have a go at making some videos. I know WHAM has covered a few and I'm sure he won't mind if I link to those, but if anyone is interested in helping out with some more, I'll give you a list of the games that need one.

Thanks.

Thanks for the votes so far. Keep them coming. We're about halfway through the voting period.

Might they have ended up in the dust bag of the vacuum cleaner?

Japan is a very popular destination at the moment. The exchange rate in particular is attracting lots of visitors.

I would of course be in favour of Mittens coming to Japan, since I live here. I might finally be able to show my face at a Mittens Proper (there have been a few small meet-ups dubbed 'Hello Kittens'). My wife and I were talking about going somewhere this summer, so it would be just my luck that you all come to Japan when I'm out of the country.

That said, my summer break is earlier in August than the dates AGA mentioned above and my paid leave situation is not very generous or flexible, so if you were to hold Mittens here, I might end up only being able to join in for a day or two rather than the whole shebang.

I have a few questions:

1) How far is the distance between the entrance to the office and the shared closet? Right by the door? in a different room, on a different floor?

2) Could you clarify whether you believe you transferred the buds to your jacket pockets immediately upon entering the office, or when you approached the shared closet? Or at some point between?

3) Did you go directly to the shared closet, or did you do anything else between the entering the office and opening the closet.

4) Did you stop and talk to anyone during that time?

5) I'm not sure if you have specified exactly at which point you removed the jacket. I imagined you took it off when you got to the shared closet, or was it at some point before that?

6) Did you hang the jacket on a hook or a hanger, or did you just dump it in a basket, or cubby-hole or something?

7) Perhaps this should have been question 1, but: When you say you "entered the office", are you referring to the specific office space your company occupies, or the entrance to a larger building which is used by multiple businesses?

8) Where is the safe, and what is the code?

Working half-theory:
Spoiler
Depending on your answers to some of the above questions, and assuming that a) no one took them from your pocket deliberately, and b) you have thoroughly searched the closet and they definitely aren't in or around it, it seems to me that they have to have been dropped at some point between your entering the building/office and putting your jacket in the closet.

The key to solving the case is in remembering exactly what you did during this period of time.

General Discussion / Re: Trumpmageddon
Wed 06/11/2024 07:23:02
Bump.

It would be interesting to see where we are with our thoughts on Trump and his expected 2nd term. The world didn't quite end the first time round. Did we overreact in 2016? Are we overreacting now? Will the US ever have another general election?

Let's keep things friendly, and keep it in this thread.

To be honest, if you submit it before I close the contest, I'm not going to be checking the timestamp too closely.

The majority of your game must take place in/on/around a large body of water, something bigger than a pool.

What is MAGS?
Started in 2001, MAGS is a competition for amateur adventure game makers. The idea is to create a game in under a month, following the guidelines set by the previous winner. It aims to help you work to a deadline, improve your skills, and provide a kick-start into making adventure games. Regardless of skill, MAGS is for everyone. Voting is based on "favourite" games, and not the most artistic, or the best coded. If you have bad art skills, use it as a chance to do some graphic work. If you're sub-standard at coding, use it as a chance to give scripting a go. Ultimately, people will vote for the most enjoyable entry.

Rules
Entering MAGS is simple. First, conceptualize your game following the month's criteria (see above). Second, create your game fuelled only by coffee. Finally, post your game in this thread, including:

* A working download link
* The title of your game
* A suitable in-game screenshot

At the end of the month, voting will begin, usually lasting for fourteen days, and the winner chooses the next month's theme.

Remember that this is a challenge to see what you can do in a month, so any tinkering you do after that, including fixing minor glitches, is against the spirit of the competition. The exception to this is that you may go in and fix major, game-breaking bugs only during voting. We want you to have a game that voters can actually play and that runs on their machines.

So to reiterate, during the voting period fixing major, game-breaking bugs is okay, fixing minor glitches or making cosmetic changes is cheating.

Tips
Here are some ways to make sure you have a game to submit at the end of the month:
* Make a tiny game. Plan small, then cut it in half. Find shortcuts (e.g. if making walkcycles is time-consuming, make the characters static or have it in the first person).
* Plan to have your game playable and submittable with a week to spare. This way you have a week to fix bugs, add some flourishes and maybe even get someone to test it.
* Plan to submit it a day or so early. This way, if there are any technical issues with uploading, they can be sorted out in time.

Need a little help with graphics? Perhaps The AGS Trove has something you can use.
Don't want to go it alone? Try the Recruitment board.

That would be nice. Personally I could use it. I'm running into some road blocks. I don't think I'll be figuring it out today.
No worries. Shall we say 3 days?

The Dark, Dark, Forest.

Spoiler
I sometimes tread
the forest fringe,
and glance between the trees.
The truth is,
we are all drawn to its boundary,
though few would admit.

But we tease ourselves,
dare ourselves,
to peek,
to smell the damp earth,
to brush a drunk limb against it,
accidentally on purpose.
Yet few dare enter.

I do daydream though,
of some day stumbling and falling between the trees,
or of being pushed by someone I trust.

Or if - in a moment of caprice - I choose to
'see what will happen'
and step in,
and allow myself
to be taken,
by the dark, dark, forest.

Sinitrena:
Spoiler
I liked the story and felt Andrew's pain at having to face his first day back at work after being found out. The ending was sad, but probably realistic. We still shame straight men for doing "gay" things. But it's a pity Andrew wasn't able to come to terms with the fact that everybody knew, and feel empowered to keep on doing his art.

I wasn't sure about the setting. Was it Britain (the Tube, snooker), America (the subway, the mentions of both Soccer and Football - to Brits, soccer is football), or somewhere else? That's not a major issue, but as a Brit, the mixture was noticeable.

Baron
Spoiler
I liked this one a lot too. I enjoyed the juxtaposition of Muriel's home life, where she is seen as an almost invalid old lady who shouldn't even be standing up, and her adventurous social life, treasure hunting with other old folk. Each of the characters seems to have their own strengths among their weaknesses and they seem to love each other. I would love to spend more time in the company of these old people.

Which is why I was disappointed for the story to end where it did. You set up a potentially great geriatric heist story but stopped it almost as suddenly as if it had been playing around with a ball of grandma's special sticky tack.

Tough one, but I'm going to go Baron, for the lovable characters and the threat of a ripping yarn.

Quote from: Cassiebsg on Sat 05/10/2024 12:33:16I'm confused. If this is  "finish your mags game", then isn't it normal that a lot of the game is done? Or is the theme "discarded mags ideas"?
I think Pell's concern was whether the theme is intended for games that were worked on only during the MAGS contests they were meant for, since Pell had done more work on their game after that period.

I don't see a problem myself, unless the extra amount done is an incredibly unfair amount.

Thanks @Babar and @jfrisby.

Just one entry this time around, but it looks great and everyone should play it!

I'll be in touch about choosing a theme for November's contest.
