Critics' Lounge / Cowboy Bebop Sprites
Wed 02/04/2008 20:52:23
I was bored the other day so I drew a Spike Spiegel sprite, but then I figured I might as well draw the rest of the gang for fun.

I know they're kind of on the smaller side for standard adventure game sprites (I think), but it's too late to change that.

3x

The combined palette is listed on the left, which should be at 26 colors. And it's kind of hard to tell, but she's supposed to be smoking a cigarette and that gray stuff which is barely distinguishable from the forum color background is supposed to be smoke.

I know how you feel. I recently just drew my first tablet background too (it was actually the one in the last background blitz, and believe me, it looked 10x messier than when I posted it!).

Thanks for entering, though!

Command & Conquer was one of my favorite games, and I subsequently played the sequels, Red Alert + 2, Tiberian Sun, and C&C 3 (skipped Generals). I haven't played Starcraft (but only have heard good things about it) and I only played a little of warcraft.

And I don't know why, but I can't seem to get into 3D RTS's (C&C 3, Company of Heroes [demo]) as much as the old games like Dune 2, and Warcraft, etc.

And another thing I hate about the recent FPS's I've played is that it all seems to be about massing units. When I played C&C 1, and I saw an enemy obelisk, I would meticulously plan out strategies to knock out the power from the safe side of the mountain with artillery, or slowing kill the sam sites with my orcas, or use my commando and sneak in from behind. I actually had to use my head to work out a plan.
In the recent C&C games (because they are the only strategy games I play), all I do is build 50 tanks and mass rush the enemy base. I don't know if it's what I'm supposed to do, or if there's another way to play, but it works and I just do it.

Does the link work for you now? It didn't work yesterday for me either, it seemed like his whole site was down, but today it works fine for me.

I just downloaded the game, but won't run really. I did the HOTU installation, and there is sound, but only on the first menu. When I try to watch the intro, or credits, or play the game, it closes...

Just in case: any ideas?

This page helped me alot: http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php9958

Specifically look at:
Quote
Intel or ATI Rage Video Cards
========================================

Symptoms:
Graphical glitches may occur with these video
cards, or the game may not load at all.

Reason:
Unknown, possibly just due to outdated drivers.

Solution:
Create a file called user.cfg in your System
Shock 2 folder, or if the file is already
present, open it for editing.
Anywhere in the file enter the text:
safe_texture_manager
on a line of it's own. Save the file and run
System Shock 2, your problem should be solved.

EXE Fix/Patch:
None known.

And this is supposed to fix the movies, but it didn't work for me:

Movies Fail To Play
========================================

Symptoms:
All FMV Cutscenes in the game are skipped
instantly, failing to play

Reason:
The old codecs used to encode the movies
is very unsupported under Windows XP.

Solution:
Run the file iv5play.exe located on the
System Shock 2 CD-ROM, this will install
the drivers and codecs needed to view the
movies. You may need to do this after each
reboot of your system. You can also register
the video drivers by running from the start
menu's Run command:
regsvr32 "x:\ss2\LGVID.AX"
You will need to change x:\ss2\ to the
directory where you installed System Shock 2
into.

I find this and the coloring ball thread strangely coincidental since I just played System Shock 1 and 2 for the first time over the past few weeks.

In my opinion, the Humongous adventure games (designed by Ron Gilbert no less) are excellent for kids to learn the adventure genre. However, you have to play the early ones before the company was bought out by Infrogames or whatever.

Here is an unfinished, messy background, that I don't really like but I'll post it anyway:

Inspirational references include a movie from the '60s and an online multiplayer game.

As far as dark comedies, I'd second Dr. Strangelove.

My other recommendations (though not dark comedies) would be Collateral, Memento, and Run Lola Run.

I hope this turns out okay!

What SSH said. I haven't played that many adventure games and I've seen that too often. Annoying. Don't ever tell the player "You don't need that" or similar stuff. Let him pick up what he wants and figure out himself when, where and how to use it.

I have a hypothetical situation:
Let's say the player is in a friend's apartment where there are multiple pick-up-able object such as pictures, dishes, books, cabinets, dvds, etc. Now the player doesn't have any need for any of these items and they are just background images. So what should you tell the player? "I'm not going to steal from my friend?" "I don't need this item?"

The same would apply for useless inventory items found all around. "I don't need this?" or, let the player pick them up and carry around useless trash?

Best rendering of Joey and Rosangela ever.

Speaking of which, who are the other cameos? I can count Mortia from Spooks and the Defoe Family.

Thanks for the help, I managed to fix it.

My current color swatches were the ones I used in 2.72 and they imported correctly as PCX files in the old version, but I guess PNG takes different color slots.

If you become really good with a mouse, apart from getting multiple carpal tunnel syndrome :D, I'm sure it would only hinder you when you start learning tablets.
Uhoh. I still use a mouse for all my drawings. As an amateur, do you think I should invest in a tablet?

@Increator
I seen no reason to go back to MS Paint at an early stage when you have a more powerful and friendly program like Photoshop that can speed up the process 10x. :) I would just suggest avoid all filters and effects, and use simple tools like the brush.

Here's the background version of the room: http://img521.imageshack.us/img521/3316/room122stairwellcb6.png

And the walkbehind mask: http://img521.imageshack.us/img521/2132/room122stairwellwalkbehqy5.png
All colors disappear and don't work except area # 7 (the darker gray just above the middle).

The room is scrolling, but I don't think that has anything to do with it, since walkbehind masks also do not work on my 320x200 room.

So, hm...should we start pointing out apparent contradictions now? :P
Perhaps some people feel obliged to explain what they meant with their passages?
The most confusing thing to me was how Detective Lane went from:
- An honest, hard working detective, to
- A heart stealing, accomplice with a shadowy figure, to
- A borderline hallucinatory madman, to
- He actually was trying to kill the first person?

Quote from: lo res man
I am sorry, but I really didn't like it. I guess what turned me off was eating the heart, and then the spider man and then the confusion and then...*runs away screaming*
Call me a sicko, but I actually loved the heart-eating part. I think it may be my favorite part out of the whole story.  :P

If we do another chain writing activity, I would throw out the suggestion that we have two teams of ten people instead of one giant team and start them both off with the same theme or even the same 200 word intro.  Then, the turnaround would be shorter and we could see how different the two stories turned out.
Yes, I vouch for this. It sounds like it will be great fun.
#318
Wow. Nice ending. It somehow senselessly makes sense to a senseless story.

Change:
Code: ags
      if (myCounterPurple > 3){

to:
Code: ags
      else if (myCounterPurple > 3){

That should fix it.

wpowell, you really have to stop this. All of these games you are replying to are years old and have probably since been abandoned. There is little or no chance that you will receive a reply from the game's author, let alone be a beta tester. All you are doing is digging up old threads which is against the forum rules.

Please stop.
