I'd like to make a fairly accurate, possibly episodic, game based off of the anime Outlaw Star, including spaceship grappler fighting, the magic bullets, and the major storylines from the show. This is something that can't be done in AGS, but its something I'd like to do. I may investigate into XNA for it over the summer.

I've always had this idea in my head about a game that plays similarly to Cowboy Bebop. It would combine space exploration (like Freelancer), with role-playing/action elements (somewhere between KoTOR, Zelda, and Jedi Knight).

You would be able to explore space, upgrade your ship, search for bounties, do side-quests, buy weapons, go down onto the planet, add more characters to your party, solve puzzles, and all that.

I thought it would make an awesome game, but it would be so complex and a mix of alternate genres I don't know how it would work out.

Flashback: Quest for Identity - Yes, the graphics and animation are awesome, but the game is so frustratingly, unbearably difficult. And the password system is killing me. I want to play the game for 5 minutes, but it forces me to play for an hour or two.

I love Out of This World (Another World, also by Delphine software), and I enjoyed Heart of the Alien on Sega CD, but I could never get past the first section of the first part of the first level of Flashback. After you get the holocube and kill a couple random guys, I can't find out where or even how to progress next. I have it lying around here somewhere, and I'd like to pick it up even all these years later (I'd plug my SNES back in just to play it), but it's so damn frustrating I punched a hole in my wall playing it as a kid. Then I laid upside down against the wall, started crying until my mom came,  and told her I fell off my top bunk and put my head through the wall...

I find myself having to replay the same sequence ten times until I figure out a formula that will get me through that sequence alive.

Then I enter the next screen and find out I still have to fight five more baddies without recharging my shield.

It's irritating, but I'm still not giving up on it.

Command & Conquer 3 - Just finished the GDI campaign. It's okay so far.

Counter Strike: Source - For fun purposes only.

I've been playing a lot of Dragonball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 2 on my Wii. I'm not a fan of the series, but the game is more fun, literally, then jumping inside the Grand Canyon when it's been filled to the brim with Juliard-trained vaudevillian chimpanzees. In addition, I've been playing tennis and boxing like mad on Wii Sports, pool on Wii Play, Excite Truck, and Red Steel. I'd like to get some other games. Anyone now anything good? I'm totally loving my Wii, so much so that I gave my older brother my XBox 360.
If you haven't played Twilight Princess, go for it. Also, Trauma Center is pretty good.

Thanks for the trophy.  :D
I'm going to be gone for the next few days, so I was wondering if Candall would like to host the next competition, if that would be alright.

>INVENTORY
You are carrying a baseball bat, a broken calculator, and a sandwich.

>Eat sandwich
That was the tastiest waste of an inventory item you've ever had.

I'm looking for someone to compose music for a short World War II themed game.

The game is short, and would only need about 1-5 tracks.

If you are interested, you can PM me for more information.

Thanks.

EDIT:
I've finished the game and I still need someone to do music.
I also need some beta-testers.

If you are interested in either, PM me.

EDIT May, 11th, 2007 - : If anybody reads this thread, I still need beta testers. PM if interested.

Since it is now the 31st, voting has begun. Voting will last for 24 hours.

Voting categories

Idea - The underlying idea to the background. Doesn't
necessarily have to coincide perfectly with the theme of the
week, just strike you as interesting/amusing/inspiring; a place
you'd really enjoy visiting within a game.

Atmosphere - How well the image manages to evoke a certain feeling or mood.

Design - How well the elements in the image are designed,
such as landscapes, buildings, decorations, clouds, doorknobs,
etc.

Composition - How well the elements in the image work
together/are positioned in relation to each other.

Functionality - How well it would work when adding sprites,
including appropriate walking distances, a good angle for
character sprites, clever walkway solutions, easily understood
exits, etc.

Technique - How well the ideas are executed in form of
rendering.

Anyone is welcome to vote, and it would be
great if all participants could provide their own.
You don't have to vote in all categories, and
if you provide multiple names in a category,
then please be clear about which one is your pick.

Comments aren't necessary but are encouraged.

Good backgrounds everyone.

Two days left in the competition. If anyone needs an extension, let me know.

The only rule I can think of when naming titles is avoid generic, overused words.
EXAMPLES:
Quest, Night, Black, Shadow, Dark, Evil, Kingdom, Land, Lost, Legendary, Epic, Ancient, Legend, War, Battle, Prophecy, etc.
"Quest for the Ancient Shadow Kingdom."  :-\
To me, when a name has the same, generic words that have been repeated over and over, it just sounds boring. I like more specific and interesting titles that could have alternate meanings.

Some of my favorite game-titles (off the top of my head):
(Commercial)
Half-Life
Grim Fandango
Secret of Monkey Island and...
Command & Conquer
Halo

(AGS)
5 Days a Stranger
TilTOR and...
Da New Guys
Automation

That was an awesome game, thanks for sharing.

I don't know if I've ever played in a more massively detailed world than this in a single game, and it all comes together beautifully.
It took me about 30 minutes to realize the whole game was a giant maze, and that got me somewhat frustrated, but the huge scope and awesome-factor more than make up for it.

QuoteGladiator Quest - one of the more original ags games made, but then anything with c-64 style artwork makes me happy.Ã,  And who couldn't appreciate nigh-impossible bosses like the old days?

Appreciated, Progz. Let's just say it wasn't a big hit with most ags people, to the point where someone in private correspondence told me he 'doesn't consider it an adventure game at all'. That was really an eye-opener.
I loved Gladiator Quest. All of the features, like trying to find extra money, talking to the characters, learning backstories, and the fighting system were all fun. I know somewhere you said it was of the nostalgic "so bad-it's good" quality, but the lack of a saving system and the ridiculously hard later bosses just put me off in the end. It was a great game though.

Matt,
I'm really enjoying your game.Ã,  :D Everything from the graphics, gameplay, animation, and music are superb.
I ran into a bug though:
Right after the tutorial finished, the game crashed with a message about SetWalkSpeed while the character is moving. I tried to reproduce it a second time, but it didn't happen again.

I made it to level 12 and I got stumped, so I decided to take a break. I quit the game, and came back a little while later, but my save file says I'm only on level 1.Ã,  :(
All the other levels have been erased from the file.
There's no way to get it back, is there?

A certain someone *wink wink* :D locked the previous thread before anyone could offer any congratulatory remarks. So, yeah, congrats on the win :). I hope I'll be able to take part in this one as well.

By the way, some people might have a problem with inserting characters and other moving objects into the background, as kind of a game development related matter. I just wanted to raise the issue, since you said 'is happening'. I don't really have a problem with it though.
Thanks.Ã,  :) About the "is happening" statement, it's up to you guys if you want to input movable objects and/or characters into the background.

Definitely interesting topic.

One question thou - is moving background ok? Because if so, I have an idea I just want to draw. Despite the fact that I can't draw well ;D

Oh, and congratulations on the winning as well. You deserved it ;)
If by moving background you mean an animated one, sure, it's allowed.Ã,  :)

Small thing: with the convention of copy n pasting the categoy rules, would you mind adding a "you" at the end, at:

"You don't have to vote in all categories, and if you provide multiple names.."

For some reason this really bothers me, even though I'm rarely anal about these kind of things.
Done.

Battles
[/size]

RULES:
Create a background that is set in the location of some kind of battle. The battle could have already happened, is about to happen, or is happening. The battle could take place on land, air, sea, or space, or whatever you desire. You could choose any time period, from ancient, to sci-fi, as long as it pertains to the other rules. You could make it as epic as you want, or some kind of small shoot-out.

There are no restrictions on size, or color, so have fun.

One last case was one too many for this detective. He approached the mobsters with his pistol and a badge, and thought he could handle himself. Unfortunately, one last bullet caught him in the chest, and he grips himself in pain while he knows he did his duty.

Wow, this was a close one. It seemed like it almost might've been a tie back there.

Great backgrounds everyone. I'll try to post a new Blitz as soon as I get a good theme.

Idea: Sparky - This one made me smile.

Atmosphere: Zyndikate - I love the warm colors and feelings on this one.

Design: Zyndikate - Everything has a nice, cartoony, CoMI feel to it.

Composition: Sparky - Nice angle for a giant monster.. thing.Ã,  :)

Functionality: Zyndikate - This one really reminded me of Willy Beamish... in a CoMI kind of way. And it would work great in a game too.

Technique: Zyndikate - The style is just so clean and crisp and it looks great too.
