Phew, I'm glad that you like this year's last theme. It sure took some time to find something interesting, yet not too constricting  :)

And there's even a first entry, nice!

Opposing Elements

Draw a background with one key element not belonging in the scenery. This can be a something like a crafted object in a prehistoric world, a gothic underground chapel or even a fossil space jokey on a deserted planet ;)
Just mix two opposing elements to an eerie experience, no restrictions on the resolution, palette whatsoever. But keep in mind: pineapple on a pizza is not enough :D

Voting categories (as usual)
Concept: your background should tell us something about the place you have depicted.
Playability: does it have clearly defined walkable areas, things to interact with, etc?
Artistic Execution: does the image convey the wanted atmosphere? What's the feeling of the place?

Thanks a lot and fortunately I finally came up with a new theme.

I also experimented with importing files from external tile editors, but I learned that loading a complex map took up to 20 seconds with 100% CPU utilisation. So I wrote an exporter for Mappy to create binary files. Reading binaries just look a fraction of a second.

In the long run I ended up creating my own map editor in AGS script. And of course I ran out of time with my platformer project ;)

Wait...what?! I won a thing?

I'm really honored - I mean it. Thanks a lot! I'll come up with a new theme soon.

And I'll print out my new trophy and put it in my boxed copy of Another World  :-D

Terrific news, thanks for the reminder and the translation. And finally my kids (or at least one of them) are old enough to enjoy some Cornelius  :-D

I'm looking very forward to play this with them

Alright, here are my votes.

Concept: Kastchey - Like all your backgrounds telling a story, I love the tale of this dying planet with a preditor as a sole survivor, who's desperately waiting for his last kill.
Playability: Neil Dnuma - It looks like a great connection screen between two puzzle rooms. Well designed walkable areas, character scaling would be a breeze to apply.
Artistic Execution: lorenzo - The production quality is simply amazing. It really makes me wonder if you actually do this for a living.

@Kastchey I was really tempted to post a screenshot of the Nimbus you designed back in the days. That could have been an instant win  8-) Oh and I'm having a hard time following a believable concept for too long. My entry started as some colored blobs and after some trial and error I carved out the shapes. I always liked (and still love) the stories you hide in your pictures.

Oh and I don't think I did the palette any justice. I still gave the objects a solid (boring) color and shaded those. Ususally people do much more creative and colorful things with the palette. And I'm not fishing for completents here ;)

I'd say, it's an NES or MSX game.

is it a Metal Gear title?

Yay, finally  :-D I hope that review didn't make you buy that thing. As mentioned I got one for free and even that was a tad too expensive :)

@Atavismus
I would never dare to question the french comic scene ;) I'm sure those Mangas were released at least 20 years earlier in France than in the rest of of Europe - so Capitaine Albator was first I assume.

Anyway: CrashPL, your turn :)

Okay, I just stop with the touchups now.
This turned out weirder than intended, but here we go: 16 colors, all taken from the C64 palette.

Definately lots to explore here ;)

--edit:
In the meantime I converted the image so that real C64 could display it too  8-)

Oops sorry, I couldn't make the connection between Albator and Captain Harlock  :-[
I've only seen the 2013 movie so far.

Anyway, your reply now contains the Anime, this FMV game is based on.  We are getting there  (nod)

Hehe, if this would be "Name the game system" we'd have a winner :)

Yes, it's on CD-I.

technically yes, but it's Motoroloa 68k based, so it's more like 16/32 bits.

Nope and nope.

Hint: It's one of the few decent games on a home console which is known as one of the worst.

yep, but it also got a home release with a different name. And the anime it's based on, has a completely different name  :=

Yay again.

How about this rather obscure game on an even more obscure platform.

Yay!

As a kid I loved this title screen (and music):

But I really sucked at the actual game :D
