Quoteare the sounds free?

The ones used, no. Do free ones exist, yes.

Edit: For the record, the strings are backed up by many instruments, though not very audible, giving them a lush, full sound. It's miles away from the common practise of choosing a patch called 'full strings' and playing a chord.

Nothing to criticize on the concept so here re some modifications:

Modified (40 kb)

Altered shadingstyle that seemed a bit smudgy, changed handcolor, armlegth, hair, lightinconsistencies (some remain), some other.

Excellent style btw.

Not what I pictured it would sound like but:

I think a big part of the issue is simply the sound of musictheorizing which to many (myself included) sounds very pretentious n pompous.

Another thing is the disproportionally small effect this knowledge usually has on the results given how fancy it sounds (fancy words should mean fancy result; if not, it s regarded as pretentious talk).

I m educated in musictheory/composing myself and I think the knowledge assists me everytime I write so I m not an antiacademic. I don t think people would actually mind learning a bit about different meters to be able to enter a contest, though it would have to be presented in a careful and humble manner.

Meters other than 4/4 aren t used very often in modern music so for most musicwriters learning about other isn t required. I know people who have composed music for many, many years and who are very proficient but simply hasn t really encountered 3/4 since it s not of relevance to them.

The kind of arrogant approach this contest has taken would filter these people out. It wouldn t be because they aren t interested in learning about different meters, but because the approach questions and offends their skills (skills that could be far superior to anyone else though not including knowledge of any technical terminology).

Let s keep it humble.

Believe it s also called being honest. Using references or doing paintovers is equal to 'sampling'* when creating music imo and should be clearly anounced (which Farlander did).

*(that is to "borrow" pieces of other songs and using it in your own; could be a drumbeat, bassline or whole sequences)

Hope it s selfexplanatory.

Wow, thanks Lili.

Really creepy seeing my real name in the topic. Thought some agency was after me for a moment.

I havn t made music for any released games, except for Igor's newyears card/game. My style, being more seriously oriented than wacky, makes it difficult for me to find games to work on, beside my own. Thanks again.

I prefer the old one. The new one is better drawn imo but lacks character.

I d suggest the old head (perhaps redrawn) on the new body.

Oh man that style is good pessi.

Sorry for the pointless message. Usually dont post these.

Edit: Couldn t help it, so here s a comment: Some sort of structure to the wall would really help I think (the even surface clashes a bit with the rest of the image).

Cause of confusion:

QuoteFor example, could I have 600 bassoons, 20 strings, 5 trumpets and a foghorn? or four instruments at the max (ie, one bassoon, 1 string, 1 trumpet and 1 foghorn).

If I have one flute, can I have it playing a chord? or is it *just* one note per instrument?

QuoteGo ahead. You can have harmonies on the same instrument. Just nothing too big. I don't want elaborate 16-part harmonies or anything. Try to stick to 3 or 4.

Since you said "go ahead" to his whole question and also since playing multiple parts on a flute isn t possible it implied that you d consider 2 flutes or more as a single instrument, so very apperent no.
#736
Also have a sort of picky question: Is "strings" considered as one instrument, such as in synthesizers where there s a single "movie strings" sound?

If I write for all the stringsections (1st violins, 2nd violins, violas, cellos, doublebasses) would that be considered as one instrument as well? Would only the parts I use be counted as seperate instruments (cellos n contrabasses playing in unison = one instrument; 1st violins playing one part and 2nd violins playing another one = two?)

Quotesome of this stuff can be intimidating to newer people

Irritating would be more accurate I d say. I think it s a matter of talkers versus doers. People have a tendency to dislike the former.

The link has been updated btw, please let me know if it works this time.

Entry, hopefully working

Not pleased with this quick attempt but anyway, here it is:

Quote(For those who might care, I'm writing this because I think it's fun. If it makes anyone angry I will shut up.)

Although I cant say I enjoy these sort of discussions I think most people dont object to them as long as they appear to actually seek some sort of answer and isn t simply an excuse to boast about ones theoretical knowledge (which in my experience seldom correlate with good musicwriting).

I m not very fond of comics. Add postapocalyptic futurism and I m very likely to be sickened by it.

For some nonapperant reason I really liked this style though; could be the drawing style, writing style or perhaps the conjunction.

Anyway, what I missed in the drawings were contrasts. At the moment they re pretty flat and made with a sort of even grey tone. To give them more depth and make them more interesting, I d focus on giving them darker greys and whiter whites.

The second thing is the textstyle. I m not very fond of the current font, though this is probably just me. What I think many would agree with though is the textplacement in the bubbles. First of all, they re often offset, which I m assuming you ve noticed though perhaps didn t bother fixing. More importantly, there isn t much space between the text and the bubble edge, something that I think makes it looked very cramped and gives me an amateurish impression.

I made some modifications on a single square, first version with pitchdark/inkstyle that ofcourse doesn t fit the pencil look well (dont know how to simulate pencil on a computer), the second a blend between the inkversion and the original giving less but still noticable inkish impression.

I ve also altered the font, the first version using a Garamond font that may not fit the style but is pleasant to read, and the second version using the same font as the original but with larger margin.

Now an essay later, here s the link:

Some modifications (115 kb)

Looking forward to seeing more.
