That is supported in the beta version, you'll have to do without it for a while, or upgrade (making a backup just in case).

Theora support has been suggested over the years, I think it's a good time to suggest it again though. Wintermute has it, and it's certainly a useful thing. Even if we ignore other platforms, it saves all the codec hassle you have if you want resonably compressed videos. Ideally it'd be able to play theora videos onto dynamic sprites or backgrounds, but fullscreen alone would be an improvement. Since I last saw it discussed the library came out of alpha testing and it has been stable for quite some time now, even if it's officially still beta. I will write a plugin for it for my game if it's not added any time soon, but I think it'd be best off as a core engine feature.

As long as it's long enough, yes.

My Datel LAN adapter (£15 from play) is perfectly fine, I've used it in a Wii and on PC for many months, and if you can't find a decently priced Nintendo one I'd say it's worth the risk. Are you sure the Datel Wifi thing was really their fault? Wifi dongles are pretty weak in general and all the Nintendo parts are rebranded generic ones anyway (the nintendo one was by Buffalo I think, and is no longer made). Ethernet is much less prone to messing up, and these things don't need any drivers since they go in the Wii.

If you want other options there are several compatible ones http://www.wiili.org/index.php/Wii_ethernet_adapter

The DS will be one of the best selling systems ever, it has already outsold the NES, and games will be coming out for the next 5 years at least (GBA is still a viable platform as you say). Sadly, that's irrelevant, because what matters is how many people are able to run homebrew content on it. A much smaller number. I know a lot of people with DS flashcarts but then we're mainly computer nerds who would know about these things.

The DS is very simple to develop for, as consoles go, I'd love to make a game for it but sadly not enough people would be able to play it for it to be worth it.

I'm glad to see people agree with me about utilising the system properly. A quick hacky AGS port wouldn't be much more than a curiosity, you'd try one game on it just to see it run and continue to play games on PC.

General Discussion / Re: PS CS3 crash

CS3 locks up my PC all the time, I have the same issue on playing flash videos so it may not be CS3 specifically, but CS2 doesn't trigger it.

That's why I asked if it was easier :P obviously if you can't come then we can't change the dates.
And I meant whatever the week in July is, 18-25 apparently. Doesn't seem like it's an option though.
#108
It's in Miami next year. If July is easier for the interested people we could just as easily have it 19-24 July, I don't mind myself. Probably should have asked around. Usually whatever week we pick a few people can't make it, sadly.

That's what SCUMMVM on DS does (has the option to resize too), it works, but overall it still feels like a hack because one of the screens is sitting there mainly redundantly. The touchscreen GP2X F200 seems like it might play PC p&c  games well, but unfortunately nobody owns one.
#110
It's not necessarily the final price if the number of people falls below 30 or the owner changes the price from the one listed, also there's a fee for linen but you can probably pay that when you get there.
And matt, we're not planning to be there for the later weekends in August... the 16th is a Saturday, that's the only weekend we'll be there for, there are two weekends in August after it ends. Maybe you could come but leave a day early if you need to be somewhere that weekend at the end?

When it comes to radically different hardware platforms I'm not a fan of direct porting, it almost never feels right. It's just my experience of it, but I've played some SCUMM games on both, and I think they are both poor at playing PC adventure games. One can't control them very well and one can't display them very well. However it's not technically impossible, and someone that would like to see it happen could volunteer.

I do think we need a rule though, considering all the porting threads. From now on, nobody can ask about new AGS ports unless they are willing and able to do the port themselves, and maintain it. Because yes, we've already discussed AGS on any platform that makes sense by now... including the C64!
#112
I'm pretty sure I could get at least the simpler games running on a DS (if I was authorised to do the port) but I don't see the point personally. SCUMMVM is awkward on DS, and even worse on mobiles/PSP/etc. AGS would be no different. AGS games were not designed for small screens, or two screens.

Wii could play ok, and it could be worth it if homebrew ever becomes very popular on there. Currently there is no publically known way of running Wii mode homebrew.
#113
No problem, we're doing ok so far, anyone else? I'll find out the transfer details.

Hehe Farlander, I just meant that the previous locations haven't exactly been cultural highlights of their respective countries :) It's not required for a good AGS meet.

CJ: "Brussels Airport is about 70 miles away ... public transport"

Brussels Airport is a long way away but as I put in my info, Charleroi is closer, and it's the budget airport too. It's still around an hour away but a large taxi split between 7 would be an option, otherwise car rental. That's assuming there's nobody to pick them up, and I think there may well be. Hajo has a car, and maybe m0ds would drive, dunno. There are cars here and there. I can read enough French to get around the bus and train sites but I haven't seen anything very simple. The trains don't go that way anymore as far as I can tell, and I haven't found a bus but it's worth native speakers looking.

If you're flying to Paris you can get the train, it's not cheap but it goes right to the village.

CJ: "Can't we provisionally book the week anyway and tell them we'll get the deposit to them by a certain date?"

The response we had was "The owner of chateau le ridsou has asked me to tell you that a 35% deposit is required to confirm a booking at the chateau." so I guess not. I don't think it'll be a big problem getting together the money in the next week or two, although I am aware it could go any moment. If the August week is taken there's also very late August, or Mid July as options. Doesn't make any difference to me, but it could to some.

The changes are for the better, and they're not that big anyway, imo, the editor has a similar feel. The main editor change for some people will be the lack of interation editor. I kind of hope as a community we can come up with an idea of a better replacement for it, because ok, it was crappy, but some people are allergic to script and always will be. We had a discussion about that in one of the tech forums, if anyone wants to add to it.

Edit: I suppose this can go in AGS General

I don't think there should even be a Demo Quest. A full game is not a good tutorial, it's too big to take in properly, and even if it's modularised it's still not ideal. If the goal is to get new users up to speed then self contained tutorials (not demos) with supplied artwork are the best thing. If the goal is to provide a reference to people that can already script on implementing certain advanced effects, then self contained demos are the answer. None of the demos/tutorials need to take more than a few days to put together. There's no reason to organise a coordinated team effort past making a list of tutorials and demos that need to be made.

I'd have no problem with donating a BG or two to a tutorial, but consistent artwork for a long demo game has nothing to do with teaching people and I wouldn't want to commit to that.

Edit: I do see the advantage of a demo that showcases the graphical, sound and script abilities of AGS, not for learning, but to assuage all these fears people have about needing 1600x1200 and so on. I'm sure plenty of artists around here would contribute, as long as it's kept very small. Doesn't need to be more than a room.

I would have liked other areas more, but the only other potential location so far was Brittany which is no more exciting. It comes down to where we can find a large house that we can afford, that is not a million miles away from a reasonably sized airport. There were a couple of places in the Alps that I quite liked but they were harder to get to, and not really big enough, sadly. Anyway, I'm sure this will be as French as Benidorm is Spanish ;)

It's certainly not too late for someone to suggest another location if they'd prefer it, but by that I mean a specific place for 30 people with a price tag poor AGSers are going to be able to afford. France is a very expensive holiday destination in summer.

Thanks, coming faster than I expected.

For people driving from the UK, the route that google maps suggests goes very near Charleroi airport, so you might also be able to subsidise the trip taking people from there. I think I'm coming down from London area with CJ unless he changes his mind.

Ok, so a lot of people want to come. We've found a place that will take 30. It's in the French Ardennes, on the border with Belgium. The price is reasonable compared to other places in France, and will be about 122 EUR per person for the week, assuming we fill it up.

Here are some details, including transport recommendations. If you are able to drive to the location it'd be appreciated, makes airport transfers a bit easier.
http://www.caverider.com/temp/maybemittens.txt

The week we are looking at booking begins the 16th of August.

If this is acceptable then we need to book it as soon as possible, because most of the summer is already booked up.  That means we need to raise a 35% deposit (1225 euros). That's 40 euros per person, but I assume not all 30 people will be able to send it on short notice, so if any of you are willing to send more, or even the whole thing (122 euros) that would be appreciated.

AGA will be collecting the money, presumably by paypal, he can give you the details.

As for myself, I'm willing to put forward 117 whenever I get paid, hopefully that'll be soon enough.

Current pledges (strikethroughs have paid):

Total deposit required: â,¬1277
Collected: â,¬1312.51

The PayPal address is:

PayPal allows you to pay directly in Euros without doing any conversion yourself, so just send â,¬122 to that address, or whatever you can manage if less.

NOTE: the amount required is actually â,¬117, but PayPal charges something like a 4% charge on every transaction, so the cost is elevated by â,¬5 each for PayPal transactions. Sorry!

British people can also send AGA a bank transfer of £87 and avoid the PayPal charges if they want to do it that way. PM AGA if you want to do this, and he'll send you his bank account details.

Ah, related to the server move then. I'll mention it to CJ, thanks for spotting that.
