The Rumpus Room / Re: Best ROCK song ever!
Wed 27/07/2005 08:48:47
  • Jimi Hendrix's "Hey Joe" seems to be the most classical rock song.

  • "Purple Haze" as well.

  • Maybe hmm... Bob Dylan's "Knocking on Heaven's Door", which's played on a hundred other ways?

  • "Born to be Wild" by Steppenwolf (a piece from the "Easy Rider" soundtrack).

  • "Bad to the Bone", George Thorogood & The Destroyers...

Oh yea, I've had a similar idea, but Not Yet... aced me. Now it looks much, much better. Very nice style.

One small tip: FIRST decrease image colour limit, THEN save it as *.gif (look at the difference between -- for example -- the desk or a briefcase colours at 1st and 2nd image... got it?).

Know it's only a detail, but aesthetics is aesthetics. ;)

Your style reminds me of some oldschool '90 games with simple 3D graphic and I like it, but (as Babar said before) they certainly need some details.

Quote from: Babar on Sat 23/07/2005 11:59:16I'd be interested to see how you place metal (or non-textured) type things into the pictures.

I wonder will you make 3D objects (then use them as sprites) or just use the sprites? ;)

Sorry for the typo. Of course I mean a ceiling, not cellar. ;)

On the bg above you can see that I've tried to make a light effect inside by casting shadow from the tables

Oh yes, I must've missed it before. Sorry.

Quote from: Juliuz on Thu 21/07/2005 20:46:25but I have really thought about inserting a lamp hanging from the ceiling. But if so...how and where?

Hmm... smell it wouldn't easy. Usually lamps are situared in the center part of a ceiling, but -- looking at your lighting and perspective -- you should place a big blurred one (to make an illusion that it's closer than the rest of room) in the top-left corner of your pic. On the other hand it just can goof up the atmosphere. Anyway, try and check out the result.

Quote from: Juliuz on Thu 21/07/2005 20:46:25Simple redraws are very welcome

Maybe tommorow, it's 11:30pm at my clock. ;)

Good luck!

Answering to your question, Bijulinus: it's not so bad, but personally I prefer some different styles.

Things I'd change:
- upper part of your picture looks like a big hole in the cellar with a paralax sky above (texture needs some perspective / cellar needs something like a wooden beam)
- draw some landscape behind the window or just a glass reflection
- door seems a bit too small, furniture -- unpractical (add a drawer to the desk + some chair near and think over the bed position -- look at the shelves and you'll catch the sense)
- some lighting would be appreciated (you can also add a turned off lamp for practical sense), it means shadows as well

Phew... that'd be everything. Don't worry, I must have forgotten about something, for sure... ;)

Oh, and at the end... Speaking of perspective, this time I agree with Zor. ;) You should seek for some one-point perspective tutorials and make a correct issue.

Well... don't give up, good luck with your bg!

Hi! At first I must say that you have a pretty nice background here.

Hmm... Minimi said something about details. Yes, it's really important unless you want your background to look empty. And it DOES LOOK empty. I'm not going to tell you what I'd change. For what? Just look around your own room and notice what's missing at your work.

BUT... I can't see any correct source of so strong light here, at your picture (except a moon light comes from behind the window, but have you ever seen so strong moonlight?). You should choose between:
- adding a lamp or another light source at the cellar (in case of inner lighting)
- darkening the whole background and making a new lighting (in case of using moonlight as the main source)

Besides take a look on these Google.com results: 1 | 2

Great theme, Geoffkhan! Too bad that someone has borrowed my guitar. Too bad that my bass is laying f*cked up in the room's corner... Pity, but maybe next time. :(

On my first look I thought there's Lara Croft on these shots. ;)

I like the atmosphere of your works (especially a beach at the second and this misty castle at the first piece), it reminds me a little of Rome at night. No need to worry, here's enough details as for me (only the sky at the third picture looks like untextured). The reason of what your works looks a bit empty, is that they seems too monumental in relation to the main character. Maybe just diminish some textures sizes or zoom in the character sprite?

Good luck with your game!

Pretty good background, especially I like these nice floor reflections. But as well for me the shower looks a bit weird. Like a wardrobe or something. I've never seen a shower with the classic door, so it just makes nonsense. Change it to typical shower door and make it transparent. Dither effect would fit fine as well.

Yeah, yeah, sure thing. If you would have asked me two year ago, I wouldn't have hesitated to say it's my favourite genre and that everything else is shit, but I've widened my musical span since then quite a bit... Now I just listen to anything, as long as it's good. :)

Heh, heh... exactly, it was funny. Hmm... speaking of metal we're speaking of subculture. So what about it? Are you still playing with this funny things?Ã, Heh, heh... Know what I mean? Sometimes I still wear my beloved leather, combat trousers and heavy boots, but it's not the same feeling as in the past. Actually I don't deplore my hairs, I'm glad I've cut them -- shaved head is not so bad.

And metal (subculture and partially music) just sucks. :)

I heard. I listened. Something around a year ago. Black/Thrash/Viking Metal. Scandinavian (those all well-known Burzums, Mayhems, Gorgoroths, Enslaveds and Darkthrones) Canadian (Blasphemy, Conqueror, Revenge), Australian (e.g. Sadistik Exekution) and of course Polish shitty Black/Death/Pagan such as Graveland, Infernum, Kriegsmaschine, Anima Damnata, Throneum and so on. I still like some of them, for example I still listen to Bathory -- the best of all of this stuff.

Now I listen to everything in principle. Just turn on the radio (sometimes Polish, sometimes Swedish) and absorb every sound I heard. Nice. The last thing I looked at really close, was an American rock band called TOOL.

Nice, this time I'm 99% in. ;)

Whoom... Finally I've returned from a sailing camp (Warmia-Mazury) and there was no time to say thanks.

Yes, still I wonder how to animate such a detailed sprite... It seems I'll just make another, a smaller one. ;)

Anyway, I have some small problems with work organisation (through those two weeks on water I filled my head with tons of various ideas) and now making planned backgrounds and storytelling. Sprites later.

You skuold look into an old 80ies game called "Street Rod". It was excellent. It included some driving, but also you modified your car, and if I do not remember wrong you won the other conestants cars when beating them. Then you could sell your car, and theirs and buy hotter ones in order to finally beat "the king" thus getting all the ladies...

Oh my. . . (!!1) Somebody who still remember this masterpiece!? You can download it absolutely for free, Blake. Now it's abandonware and highly recommended classics!

By the way, search for "Gearhead Garage" (probably an abandonware, but don't really know) or "Axelerator: Have a N.I.C.E. day" (less realistic but still very good). Not so long ago I saw some info about the third fan-made part of "Street Rod", you can download beta version from this site: http://www.streetrod3.com/ if you want. As well, here you'll find another two parts.

Have good fun!
