I have more time in Halo than any other computer/console game of any kind...at first I hated it and scoffed at people for playing it until I started getting into 4 vx 4 battles with my friends every night...the most addictive game ever..but I am really confused when you say it was leaked a day early.  That would mean that it has already been released now, and its not due for a while..and I dont think they are making it for PC..

ninja, good crit--you were right.  i think that the problem was i only had bright highlights and no shadow highlights.  i spent a lot of time redoing all of the trees.

definitely no grass.

did try to make more roots and stuff in the ground also....and the bracket fungi was a good idea.

Well I'm glad that the mood and age come off very strong..this is supposed to be the very oldest part of the forest, that large tree came from the first seed that planted the forest.

The ground is not trampled from walking, it is merely supposed to be devoid of life.  This scene is taken in broad daylight.  The idea is that the canopy is so dense here that it is impossible for light to come through, which is why the trees do not have low hanging branches and there is absolutely no grass or undergrowth.  The greenish stuff on the ground is just supposed to be matted twigs and acorns etc, that have collected over the hundreds of years.  I made it green because all of the light in this image has a greenish hue and so it would look funny if it weren't...so it's not supposed to begrass if that's what you thought.

The light source in this scene will be from a character that will be holding a lantern...since it's not 3D I need to make the light static.

WEll...the paint overs look nice but they both changed your style a lot.  Stick with your style, it's what you're comfortable with.

First order of business is to greatly reduce the number of stars...and make them vary from really far away to a maximum of what you have now.  Make them go down to the size of one almost black pixel -- you can use size and brightness to indicate distance.  They can hav a white dot in the center also.  Take a look at how they do stars in Major Stryker or something.

I don't know how to do a nebula in that style...but usually the best way to do gas clouds or smoke or fog or anything of that nature is just to draw the general shape and then go crazy with the smudge tool on a large fuzzy brush.

a very mysterious part of the forest...how can I make it better?

#507
That's awesome, a very intriguing setting!!!

Now the tough part is going to be coming up with a good plot to somehow force the character into a spiraling mystery that leads him into Grud'Mortis.  Have you figured that out yet?

Also I think Platon's quote could be written a little bit more elegantly.

But seriously, this sounds cool...I am already curious!

when I originally was giving you suggestions, I did not think that the lasso technique could be applied to this type of image...I usually only use it for solid colors without outlines.  so I gave it a shot and yeah it worked out...but it's a lot of work, took about an hour probably...

not bad, but don't be afraid to zoom into 400% and make your lasso clicks a lot closer together; try to make the black outline much thinner.

when you are making the color layers, do not just use the magic wand selection tool...it will result in the white outlines which I can see.  Instead use the lasso tool again and select an the halfway point between the black outlines.  this way you know it will go right up to the edge.

this picture also isn't as good so the result isn't going to look as good  := it might look a little better if you shaded the hair as well.

Hey, you weren't being unclear at all; I was.Ã,  The "What?" was my astonishment at my own efficiency.  Thanks for the pic though...that actually looks really nice.Ã,  I was having trouble getting that rootlike growth to them.

Having done the outside and not put a tree with roots hanging over, I think I'm just going to remove the roots altogether.

I have just figured out how to make custom brushes and I used it on the outside so I decided I better do that on the inside as well.Ã,  I have noticed a bunch of smoothing issues which I have corrected.

And Darth, you were right; there was no need to make the walkable area so crowded.Ã,  I moved it up some.

indeed, reduce the maximum angle that the upper arm makes and add small bend at the elbow

What?  Here's the entrance.  I'm telling you folks, the Wacom literally paints itself...took me an hour.

General Discussion / Photoshop Brushes?
Wed 13/10/2004 21:18:20
Well I would have rather posted this in the C&C forum where all the artists go but I'll abide by forum decorum *this time*...:P

So... how do I make my own custom brush images, and specify randomized transformation limits (rotation, density, etc) for their use?

I'm using photoshop 7.  Any help is greatly appreciated, it will really improve my ability to do rust and mildew and grass and leaves and hair oh my

This is for a small natural forest cave, the only area transition is the front opening.  All the character has to do here is meet someone and talk.

I'm glad you all like it...but I did ask for C & C and it's not THAT good!  Luckily I am pretty hard on myself as it is...better?

Aussie,

Ok, here I will show you what I mean.

1) I use polygonal lasso to outline the black areas, fill that in on its own layer.Ã,  this goes on the top layer
2) For each large color area, I select that area and fill it in with the appropriate color and put it on it's own layer in the appropriate order so as to reduce the amount of lasso-ing I have to do
3) I select all the shadowed areas, fill it in black, and put it on top of all the color layers and adjust the opacity until the shadows look proper

The smudge effect is the best way I have found to enlarge photographs...but this seems to be the best way to enlarge "color-coded" things without appearing to lose detail

EDIT - I accidentally modified someone elses edit in the smudge one...although, I do like their edits...it is not fair for the comparision that they dont appear on the others

Nice.  Reminds me of the Muzzy cartoon graphics!

The way I do it is simply use the select additional and select negative to make a smooth selection around the shapes, then I get rid of the original layer and just fill in my new selection...voila, crisp edges.

This would be pretty time consuming to do on your image though because of the edges and lines which would all need to be outlined.

Anything that is written with the intent to be poetry IS.  Don't tell him that it's not poetry...it is.  It doesn't particularly speak to me either, though....except for one line, "corporations rule as nations" which I think is clever.  Your poem here looks like how I often prepare to write a poem...just write down the thoughts you want to convey on separate lines...then FROM that try to make it poetic.  I say, see what you can do with it from here?

The original woman was white and you have made her asian.

She looked drugged out originally, and now she looks pissed off.

That said, I think your version looks a lot hotter.  You have the correct shape of the face in your drawing, but the edges could be made more smooth.  Don't make the face longer...

You can easily change the expression to coy/sexy or back to retarded just by parting the mouth.

If you reduce the flushness in her cheecks in intensity, and move this flushness down a little bit, her face will look less 2d.

Excellent job.
