I'll also give some additional clues based on the earlier guesses.

The white in the first image is snow.

The movie could be considered old (though any film that I remember being released never seems old to me).

As Jay says "it is a good film" but it came out around the same time as several similar seeming films that weren't so good and I think this one is largely forgotten as a result. This is the director's first English language film and he's since gone on to much greater success.

Hoorah! I went back and looked closer at the pics (use the zoomable images function and people might guess stuff quicker!), and it came to mind from 'weird-faced thing + scientist in sewer', and then the director hints supported it.
