Well folks, winter is here.. Unless you live in the southern hemisphere, where it's currently another perfect summer's day. Nothing but sun, sand and surf, and the cool sounds of summer. So if you are currently having the winter blues, or the recent MAGS coldness theme is making you feel a tad down, then buck up bitch! Summer is back!

I need another mix CD for the upcoming summer holidays.

Previous collaborators on AGS Anthems Vol. 1 will be familiar with my pedantic mix methodology. But this time there is just one criteria: choose a song that reminds you of summer. It doesn't mean the song has to be about summer, just something that has some personal nostalgic connection with summer and chilled-out summer holidays. (Anything except Summer Nights from Grease).

Here's a start. There's a funky new song currently getting lots of airtime on a hip local radio station that I want to share..

Human Animal by Total Giovanni
https://soundcloud.com/totalgiovanni

Takes me back to the sweet summer days of 2014.. last week. 8-)

I almost made this my pick, and I too cannot explain why I like this song.

Good to see some Beach Boys!

Feel Flows - Beach Boys

I had a bit of an inkling that the Beach Boys would make an appearance on this mix.

Good work folks. Summer is shaping up to be pretty groovy indeed. 8-)

As a young lad I had this one on a mix tape, and listened to it on my walkman while biking around delivering newspapers all summer ;-D:
Ash - Oh Yeah

A couple of others that probably only make sense to Scandinavians:
Bob Hund - Düsseldorf (I always associate Sweden with summer, and the rattling at the end reminds me of a boat)
Sterk Naken og Biltyvene - Sommerlykke

I love bob Hund! Their best song however is without doubt "det skulle vara lätt för mig att säga att jag inte hittar hem, men det gör jag (tror jag)." (can only find live recordings of this one on youtube, and they don't do the song justice).

I'm actually not a big Beach Boys fan, but "Feel Flows" always makes me think of summer, and the movie Almost Famous. I loooooved that movie when I was 15.

Intense Degree

I don't know what your policy on Jamiroquai is but 7 days in sunny June always makes me think of chilling out in Summer!

CaptainD

I'm going to opt for one you may not have heard of...  "Keep On Dancing" by South African group Mango Groove.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zKNQNTCqNeE

I changed my mind about which of their songs reminded me of summer most about 5 times before finally posting this... 8-)

My favorite is probably "bob hunds 115:e sång," but I'm not an expert on the band by any means. I only had one EP of theirs + whatever played on the radio. "Det skulle vara lätt..." is on Spotify, anyway.

monkey424

Cheers guys. Good stuff. I'll have a listen to these tonight. 8-)

Hey Snarky - what's this Bob Hund song about?

Snarky

Damned if I know. The lyrics seem to be some kind of stream of consciousness ("airplane leaves Seattle / now landing in Düsseldorf / .../ tape roll picks up radio noise / bike ride on rainy gravel"). The end is sort of wistfully hopeful: "I walk barefoot in a store / take an icecream boat, I'm in love / Before, I was grumpy and cross / Perhaps I can be happy here." (Of course, in Swedish it scans and rhymes.)

The SN&B song is... rather more straightforward. :=

Hey Snarky. I think I'm going to go with this one. I like it for some reason.

CaptainD

Hellfire, Penny Whistle and Dance Sum More are the ones that came to mind.

My personal favourite of theirs is "Another Country", but it doesn't say "summer" to me.

My personal picks:
Crowded House - Weather With You (can't find the original for some reason..)
Sheryl Crow - Soak up the sun
Pet Shop Boys - Se A Vida E (That's the way life Is) always reminded me of summer.. maybe it was the video..

CaptainD

I had to say Troll Song as it's also my game though.

Dualnames

Worked on Strangeland, Primordia, Hob's Barrow, The Cat Lady, Mage's Initiation, Until I Have You, Downfall, Hunie Pop, and every game in the Wadjet Eye Games catalogue (porting)

monkey424

Thanks guys. So many to choose from! I'll troll through these tomorrow. 8-)

And of course we still need an album cover. Where are our talented artists?

monkey424

Alright, I'll stop beating around the bush..

Er... actually he works for ME!! :P  Well, sort of.

May I respectfully suggest as your album cover the four trolls from Troll Song in Bermuda shorts, on a beach, perhaps playing beach volleyball?  I give you permission to use the characters (just send $50K to my PayPal account before the weekend's over.)

Yeah I changed my mind. But I may change my mind again before the day is through. (roll)

The YouTube video for Dance Sum More is somewhat amusing too, not that it's relevant.

For the last few songs, suggest some reggae or more African vibes.

How about Johnny Osbourne 'No Ice Cream Love'.
Man, my mum used to listen to this album when I was a kid. Takes me back.
http://youtu.be/NgdVllwjo7Y

[actually, listening to it now, I think he's actually saying it's winter so he don't want no ice cream because he's already cold. But seriously, how cold does it get in Jamaica in the winter? ]

24 deg. C on average in winter according to quick Google search. Brrrrr! 8-)

Good work Stu. I'll add this to the mix somewhere.

Can anyone suggest an end track?

Noah And The Whale

The lead singer Charlie Fink sounds super West Country (England) but is from Twickenham London where the band was also formed. I've always found that really strange.

Anyway here are two suggestions, either-or really:

Iron & Wine
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_VHj1_-Hg0I - Sunset Soon Forgotten
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9SmwC_ZX0I - Lion's Mane

Check out the album The Creek Drank the Cradle in general, there are some very summer beach sounding songs on there :)

monkey424

Thanks Atelier.

I've listened to a bit of Iron and Wine now. Very mellow stuff. I'm discovering a lot of new music here.

I found another of their songs that I quite like:

Carousel
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hc8hXJTki3U

I like the tune, but the subject might be a bit dark.

What are your thoughts? Any other I&W songs you can suggest with this sort of tempo / tune?

Any other artists you can recommend? e.g. Pearl Jam, Stereophonics, etc.

Stupot

In memory of Joe Cocker, how about his version of Summer in the City?

CaptainD

If you're still short of a track, and you don't mind me chiming in with another (last time you went into meltdown when I did! :P), I would like to suggest The Boys Are Back in Town by Thin Lizzy.

Captain. This is AGS Anthems Vol. 2 and I think we've all moved on from the circus of Vol. 1 and are now all a bit more mature. You are of course welcome to suggest more than one song. No one will judge you for being a song hog. (roll)

On the last mix you suggested Eliza Doolittle and Paloma Faith, the latter of which missed the cut. Any tracks of hers you can recommend?

CaptainD

Who said we had to mature since last time?  No-one told me!!! :P

My favourite Paloma Faith song is Upside Down.

monkey424

No no no no no!!!

This song is not even remotely summery. It won't do at all! Yet again you have failed to follow very simple instructions thus resulting in yet another awkward situation. If i didn't know any better, I'd say you're making a mockery of the mix master. And I'm not talking about that new fandangled cooking appliance every housewife is raving about at the moment. You know, the one that costs $2000 or something like that. Shhh. My wife doesn't know it exists yet and I intend to keep it that way. :X

Anyway, you've ruined Christmas! And I don't think we can be friends anymore. Unless you can redeem yourself and suggest something more sensible?

I'll give you one more chance, Captain D.

One more chance!

P.S. Thanks for the Christmas card this year. Ha! We thought you'd forgotten. (roll) My regards to the family.

MiteWiseacreLives!

In the summer, I like Poets, by Tragically Hip

CaptainD

Monkey is such a fusspot... :-D

I really don't feel any of Paloma's songs remind me of summer.  Thin Lizzy or nothing!
