dayowlron's method of shifting characters one over was not exactly wrong but the way it was done (by using the alphabet) was not correct.

The hint in the original clue is the < sign and the starting three letters KEY, suggesting that the solver should go a key to the left of every letter (on a QWERTY keyboard). This gives BOARD and also makes the entire clue KEYBOARD. The fact that, if you do the same with the same letters but using the alphabet and subtracting a letter each time gives the answer MORSE blew me away and was not a clever intentional red herring.

Wow. That’s a nice puzzle. Simple but tricky. And hard to get ‘Morse’ out of your mind. It’s super amazing that Morse was possible in that way seeing as it’s the name of another type of code.
