The AGS Panel is a team of AGS forum veterans who play all of the games here, and give them ratings from one to five cups. The rating system is as follows:
1 Cup Not serious entertainment
2 Cups A reasonable game, worth a try
3 Cups A good game, worth playing
4 Cups A great game, well worth your time
5 Cups An outstanding, must-play game!
Feel free to disagree with the panel's rating, and please don't be offended if you think your game has been underrated!

(Why has my game been rated 1 cup?)

If your game has been rated 1 cup, please don't be offended! It's common for your first game release to get a 1-cup rating, due to the game having a lack of polish and flair -- which is understandable, because you're just getting started!

Please understand that the main purpose of the ratings is to help potential game players find high quality, bug-free games to play. You've probably learnt a lot about AGS as a result of making your first game -- so why not use that knowledge to start afresh, and do even better with your next game!

About this game

Other Worlds is a traditional game which took me 3.5 years to complete. It is a 3rd person, point & click adventure that looks and plays like the late 80s Sierra / LucasArts productions. My intention was to create the best amateur freeware game ever in terms of gameplay.

Features:

-More than 150 locations to explore

-More than 40 characters to interact with

-Dozens of inventory items

-The infamous A.L.K.I.S. interface (A.L.K.I.S. stands for Advanced Language Kit and Interface System)

-An intriguing, humorous story full of surprises and plot twists

-A large number of challenging puzzles

It is a fantasy story of a young woman going on a quest to find her missing friend, and discovering a lot more. Also available in Italian! Visit my homepage for the Italian version.

If you overlook the graphics, this is probably one of the best games I have played on AGS. The characters are interesting and unique, the storyline makes you want to keep playing and is full of twists and unpredictability (I loved the ending). There were lots of puzzles (this is a LONG game - another reason to play it, in my opinion) and most were challenging without bringing you to the point of tearing out your hair. Also, the plot made you want to complete the puzzles to find out what happens next. So . . . kudos to Alkis! This is an amazing game.

The bad character sprites make for an awful contrast with the backgrounds. Some puzzles come down to pixel hunting. The characters and dialogues come across as unnatural. At one point I thought that the game was going somewhere, and then the storyline was bluntly interrupted with a 'joke' on behalf of the Myst-games. Then I got pulled into another world with plain boring characters, and then I gave up on it. I spent several hours on the game hoping to get to see why so many people seem to like/love it, but to me, it never got to be more than a waste of time.

Don't know why I haven't left a review yet - played this gem a few years ago and it is still one of my all-time favorite adventure games. The characters, puzzles, and the wonderful story make it a must-play for AGSers in my opinion. With a lot of games I just mindless play through and forget about them the next day, but I really was drawn into this game, and still think about it once in a while. Thank you Alkis! <3

I love this storyline.

At the beginning I was sceptic, but later I loved this game. It is difficult sometimes to find the "exit" from some scenes. Anyway, it was really a fun to play it.

I loved this game. There was just the right amount of humor. A nice bitter-sweet ending and exceptionally loveable characters. The only thing I can thing of are that the sprites seemed a little....off, but that is easily over looked, especially after you get to the other worlds. Great game. Sequel? Please?

What did you like the most about Other Worlds?
The size. Man, the game's size amazed me. It's probably the largest adventure game I've ever played (and I've played almost all the classics and many more). The story telling and atmosphere are nice, too, as well as the music. I like it how Alkis threw so many puzzles, and still they never become tedious to solve, or repetitive (except for some minor issues, see below).

What did you dislike the most about Other Worlds?
Although the puzzles were well balanced most of the time, there were a few very illogical ones, there was some minor pixel hunting (see next answer) and some big back tracking and wandering whenever your actions in one place triggered some character appearing somewhere else. Oh, and the backtracking, the playable map during a big chunk of the adventure is big, and quite a few times you're sent from one corner to the other.
Moreover, even though I knew the Exit areas were small and tricky to find, I missed three or so that I had to look up in a walkthrough.

Overall, the story is good and very well presented. The humor wasn't particularly good in my opinion, but it was very far from being boring, or annoying. No bad taste jokes, and that's a big plus in my book. The music was nice, but some parts could have used just a little bit more atmosphere. Is it just me, or the ending is a bit rushed in comparison with the rest?

Anyway, I hope I don't sound like a whiner, the game was great and I'm very happy with it. It's worth every second it takes to play, and every second it took to develop. Thank Alkis very much!

And last, if you are still reading this, what are you waiting for? Are you *crazy*? Go play this game right *now*.

By the way, did you take all the background pictures yourself

Wow! This game took three and a half years to make and you can really tell. It was worth every minute of hard work because the result is the best game I have played since Pleurghburg.

First, the games length. This is an absolutely huge game which flits between tons of different locations. It begins as an ordinary, domestic style pick-things-up-around-the-house sort of game but then it changes unbelievably throughout. The rapidly changing atmosphere meant the game was never boring. For example, the lonely mansion stage of the game has an amazingly cold, detached feel but then later scenes have a bright, comic atmosphere.

Which brings me to the highly inventive script. The jokes are brilliant, largely thanks to the detailed characters. The puzzles are sometimes very difficult which means you may be playing this game for a very long time but its worth it. There are some amazing plot twists and turns which land you in unexpected locations and the mixture of comedy and darkly serious plot development makes the game compelling.

The look of the game often reminded me of the great 'Escape from Evergreen Forest', laying characters over real backgrounds. This look helps create the great atmosphere but occasionally makes it difficult to see objects and know which ways you can exit the screen. The music became quickly annoying too but I consider these extremely minor quibbles, especially when talking about such an astonishing game.

In short, Other Worlds is a major epic and sure to become regarded as a classic. It is stuffed full of great characters, interesting locations, witty dialogue, surprising plot twists and the best ending in an AGs game since 5 Days a Stranger. All in all, this is a must although be warned, This game will consume your life for at least a couple of weeks

This is the best game I have played in a long time. Shows that a lot of work went into making it.

Surprises me that it only got a 86% rating for 49 votes when it has been downloaded 873 times already. Come on guys, vote.....This one is a winner. Need more like this in this forum.

One of the best AGS games I have played, it's clear that enormous effort went into creating this.

The graphics are uneven (some screen are really too messy, and there is too much contrast with sprites) but some parts are excellent (I liked a lot the last chapter).

The puzzle are plentiful and vary in difficulty, but overall this is a game for veterans, because of the enormous number of locations, objects and spells, I was stuck several times. The cypher puzzle is my favourite, but I liked the spells too.
Good work.

The story is where the game really shines, reminds me a bit of "The Longest Journey", and it's not a bad thing, I think that adding more dialog so some conversations (like the one sister) would have helped to flesh out better some characters.

The game has a slow start but it really grows on you, overall a must download. Kudos!

Excellent!

There is hardly more I can say about it.
It's big, but definitely worth the download.

This is the kind of game I've been searching for for years!Best game I've played since the early 90's.

Aside from the 'exit' problem above, this is a wonderful game and extremely original. There were jokes that made me laugh out loud and some very cute references to popular culture that didn't spoil the mood of the game. You can tell that lots of care was put into this game's plot, puzzles and characters.

Overall great game, a lot of locations. Sometimes difficult to find the "exit", couple places difficult to see objects. A lot of puzzles, fun ! :)
