The AGS Panel is a team of AGS forum veterans who play all of the games here, and give them ratings from one to five cups. The rating system is as follows:
1 Cup Not serious entertainment
2 Cups A reasonable game, worth a try
3 Cups A good game, worth playing
4 Cups A great game, well worth your time
5 Cups An outstanding, must-play game!
Feel free to disagree with the panel's rating, and please don't be offended if you think your game has been underrated!

(Why has my game been rated 1 cup?)

Close window
If your game has been rated 1 cup, please don't be offended! It's common for your first game release to get a 1-cup rating, due to the game having a lack of polish and flair -- which is understandable, because you're just getting started!

Please understand that the main purpose of the ratings is to help potential game players find high quality, bug-free games to play. You've probably learnt a lot about AGS as a result of making your first game -- so why not use that knowledge to start afresh, and do even better with your next game!

About this game

Follow the adventure of Cedric and Victor as they try to get a demonstration up and running. It's not as easy as it sounds and they end up doing something completely different, but hey, at least they tried, eh? CatR is a fairly short and easygoing adventure.

When a game is rated and everything is over 90%, you just know it is going to be a good! And this certainly lived up to it's reputation.

best free game ever and better than most of the professional ones. yep, one could not count more than 10 games since 2000s which could exceed this one. wonderful backgrounds, lovable characters, funny dialogues... and the puzzle difficulty is just right. I am sure this guy could create legendary games if he had budget.

Bernie is the master of starting many projects and barely finishing any of them.
Cedric is one of the few exceptions and it shows what the guy can do with a deadline looming over him.

This is a great game, with puzzles that are difficult enough to satisfy you when you solve them, but which rarely frustrate. They also feel inventive at times, with no annoying fetch quest included.
The characters are just as well thought out. Cedric is a little elf boy, who is intelligent and very determined to reach his goals. Viktor is a blacksmith Cedric wants to work for, and he follows him around. You will meet many others fun ones, like an insulting hat or the drunk barkeeper.

The graphics exhibit a trademark that Bernie is well known for in the community, namely the overuse of green hue. Flames are green, as is fire or rays of sunlight. Sometimes green is so overused that some screens are nearly monochrome! Nevertheless, the art is great, very detailed and lovely stylized.

Many problems I had with the game were part of the interface.
There's an inconsistency with entering certain locations. For example, when you want to go inside a room through a window, you have to use the verb "use". If you want to get out, you have to use "walk to".

The verb "hit" in the game is superfluous since you never need it in the whole game, and its use doesn't result in funny remarks either.
It would have been better to replace it with a verb that is subsumed in the vague "use", like "give".

Left clicking on inventory objects does nothing, since the verb "walk to" is selected for this, which doesn't make any sense. Other adventures let you "use" the object with a leftclick, which would have spared the tedium of selecting "use" over and over again.

Another small nagging issue: as long as the bowl is placed under the potato press and not in your inventory, you can't put the picture in it, which confused me.

I wished Cedric would have been a bit more "creative" in his responses about the various actions the player might try out, even if they don't lead to a solution, but make kinda sense. Often enough you just hear the same phrases over and over again.

Not a criticism, but there's one funny thing I noticed, and that's how the locations were designed. As you'll notice the dungeon doesn't have an entrance, you can only escape through the window, there's no door out, which begs the question how you got in. Also in the wizard's room, there's a plank that reaches down from the window so Cedric can walk in, but otherwise there doesn't seem to be a proper reason for it to be there. The designer built the locations in a way that benefited the gameplay, even if it lead to some plot holes.

It's much easier for me to criticize a game than to laud it, but I hope that I didn't give the wrong impression. While there are some annoying issues with the interface and more unique responses to different actions wouldn't have given such a robotic impression of Cedric, this is still a very amusing and fun adventure with a satisfying conclusion. I liked it, and I hope so will you

It'll make you nostalgic as hell. This is how real AG and AGS games should be.

Cedric is a MAGS game!? I can't believe it!

This is a top quality game with a good length to boot. I especially enjoyed the second half. In the first I was a little bit disappointed that you didn't get more people to follow you around the town (it was still very fun though).

Good game! I can honestly say this is the best music in an AGS game ever! Particularly in the bar.

Great game! Artwork and story are absolutely brilliant. Puzzles challenging but really made sense - which is just the way I like it. I loved the interplay between cedric and victor.

Very good game. I found the premise a little discouraging though, and the dialogues, albeit funny, could be rewritten in a more original fashion. The artwork is the strong point, that is for sure; even when stuck, the backgrounds and the characters kept pushing me to try a little harder. Great colors choice. Best designs go for Cedric, the Gargoyle and Xcotq'l.

This game is brilliant for many reasons.

The characters have and personality. The graphics have atmosphere and charm that brought back memories of the old Lucas arts games. Definitely a must play!

Well seriously, without doubt, this is THE BEST AGS GAME I'VE EVER PLAYED.

Yes, immediately, you will be entranced by the graphics, but that's just icing on the cake.

The overall game design follows that of classic Lucas Arts stuff, we're talking magic titles like Monkey Island. Cedric is well studied in this field. If you've ever played a classic Lucas Arts game, you'll feel right at home instantly.

But to call the game a ripoff would be a terrible description. Cedric is influenced by the games of yore, but certainly holds its own as an original title. The characters are hilarious, and most important of all, each character ACTUALLY HAS THEIR OWN PERSONALITY. Far too often when you play adventure games (especially freeware ones) it seems like each character is the SAME person over and over, and this is due to the designer being unable to think outside their own head. Well, Bernie is a master of character design and creation, you really feel like you're dealing with a great multitude of different personalities here. Fantastic.

The puzzles, overall, are exceptionally good and varied. They are LOGICAL, 99% of the time, and honestly are -fun- to figure out... which is another complete rarity in most adventure games. Though the puzzles are logical, they are also "wacky" and that makes them not mundane. There were a few puzzles that were a bit annoying, and that honestly only has to do with the fact that this is Bernie's first adventure game.

SPOILER ALERT - I had problems with the following puzzles: The crab. Okay... thinking to "pick up" a snapping crab with your bare hands is completely unintuitive, especially when Cedric seems scared of everything in the first place. The magic spell instructions could of been a bit more descriptive, as you really had no idea what exactly to mash in what order. You are told to find ingredients that never actually get used in the bowl... counter intuitive. And then... the FEATHER. Oi oi oi. It magically appears later on after you've already explored the room before (bad bad bad) and then when it does it becomes a "pixel hunt" item that is basically camoflauged against the background. But let's chalk all that up to beginner's folly, because again, 99% of the puzzles are easily solved due to being actually LOGICAL. /SPOILER ALERT END

If I could change anything about Cedric, it would be that the game had actual sound FX. I hate that these were left out due to "time constraints". Time constraints against what? Who set the deadline against when Cedric had to be completed? Sound FX are sorely missed thereof. I can only imagine what it would sound like to hear a hat squish against a honey coated web, or a demon in a bubblebath. However, for what it's worth, the music that Bernie selected is fantastic and always fits the atmosphere of the game. Excellent aural taste.

And of coruse, I wish the game were longer... but with every truly good game, you're always sad to see it end. That is the sure sure sign that you've just played a bit of magic.

And really, that's about it. Everything else in the game was amazing... blew me away for being a one man title. There's no denying these are the best original graphics and animation to ever grace an AGS title. The best puzzles I've seen yet, the best characters, and even a fantastic storyline with plenty of clever little plot twists to keep things fresh and intersting.

Bernie is without a doubt the new king of AGS (sorry Yahtzee, sorry Logan Worsley), and I can only drool in anticipation at what he can bring us next.

If you miss this game, you're only hurting yourself!

I completed it. I didn't save once, because once i started playing i couldn't stop. This for me is the PERFECT game. Seriously, the dialoque rocks, the characters have depth and personality. This is definitely the coolest kid main character ever!

The graphics is what really stands out. Amazing bgs, man. You must be some kind of artist somewhere :)

The game reminds of the games of old! The atmosphere is perfect, really felt like i was in the game world.

Can't wait for hero theorem!

There's not a bad thing I can say about this game. Everything made sense, the art was superb, and the story was interesting and funny. I like the interplay between Cedric and Victor. That was a nice touch.

Good work!
