Thanks, CW.
I tested this ACWIN build and...

* no longer crashes with "IDirect3DSurface9::Present failed" when you alt+tab from fullscreen Direct3D.
Yes, this fix works for D3D...

* now minimizes OpenGL fullscreen mode when you alt+tab from it.
No. Not on my end at least. The game image stays on screen. The "windows" cursor appears on it but I'm not able to access the Windows environment... I'm forced to use ctrl-alt-del and then cancel to find that the game is minimized...
But, I already reported an issue with alt-enter not going to windowed mode correctly for me with OpenGL. I suspect it's a related issue.

* now the fade-out effects in OpenGL don't have "glowing" at the screen borders.
Can't say because I did not see this effect myself before on my PCs...

Hello everybody!

I submit...

You are called by a kid, asking for help.
He is trapped in a mysterious place.
Can you help him to get out?

I Want Out! is a short escape-the-room game.

- 320x200 resolution,
- 9-verb interface, in LucasArt style,
- only one room but a lot of interactions,
- languages : English, French, German.

Cheers :)

Also, it looks like there is some sort of "glowing" border around game in OpenGL, it is visible even during fade-out.
I saw this on Youtube videos but thought it was a video capture or encoding issue...

Is it true that OpenGL does not minimize when you alt+tab from fullscreen mode? Does anyone remember if this was always like this?
Following our discussion on another thread, I investigated that possible Alt+Tab issue and I was about to report this exact same problem.
When in fullscreen, neither alt+tab nor Windows_key+D seem to work.
In fact, they do (focus is lost), but the game stays on screen.

Also, now Direct3D crashes almost always when you alt+tab from fullscreen, saying "Present failed".
I discoverd that too atm... Crash with this message :
Code: Adventure Game Studio
  1. IDirect3DSurface9::Present failed
And I guess this present has nothing to do with last Xmas...

Thanks for your fast answer, CW!

E: Checked the rest of the video, it looks like they begin doing that after certain point? Did user alt+tab somewhere during the game? I recall that may cause some keys "stick" in memory so AGS always thinks that a key is pressed.
Oh, didn't see your edit... Well I'll ask, but it could be that, because, by looking at the video, there's a cut just before the occuring of the bug... So maybe the player took a look at the walkthrough and got back to the game...

are you saying that even if you set "skip only by click" mode they still continue to skip that fast?
Apparently, yes (according to the only feedback I had)...

Does your game feature voice-over? If yes, is there a difference if you turn voice on/off?

Engine Development / Issue : Dialogs skip too fast
« on: 06 Jan 2018, 13:33 »

Some players found a weird bug in my game. It's related to the dialogs : they start to skip instantaneously without any user input after some time playing.

Quote from: a player...
I've tried playing your game, but unfortunately after a while the text all scrolls through very quickly whenever I examine or do any other actions on things. I restarted a couple times and experienced the same thing.

Or visible here, in this walkthrough video :

My question is : has anyone seen the same problem (possible AGS engine bug) or coult it be just my game (bug in my scripts...)?

The game has the option to change the dialogs skip speed (4 choices : from click-to-skip to high speed) but changing this seems to not be of any help.
It was seen only by 2 players... so it may be related to their system.

I don't have any information on the players' system version atm (it's Windows, but don't know the version).

The game runs with latest stable AGS version (

What? The puzzles are mundane? :D
Yes, I get that... they certainly are... I think it's because it all started as a proof of concept for us. The story came after, in order to create a context for the "mechanics" we would like to test... We didn't aim fo originality, that's true ;) Maybe next time?
But glad to see you like it anyway.:)

Thank you! :)

I also noticed one little grammatical error, although it's not a huge deal
Yes, maybe. As my english is quite basic... I couldn't tell. I found this on WordReference :

"Both one's self and oneself are correct. Most people would use oneself, whereas deep thinkers would use one's self."

So I guess I'll leave it like that (and I don't want to offend my proofreaders :-D). But don't get me wrong, I like nitpicking, thank you ;)

I can confirm this for the very same link earlier today with Chrome on my smartphone.
Currently, it does not do that anymore.

Thanks, CW!

I made that mistake as well.
Based on your feedback, I changed this in the last version yersterday : USE and THROW can be both used with this item now.
I didn't want the player to be stuck like this just because of a "bad" choice in the verbs whereas the logic was correct.
Add spoiler tag for Hidden:
I kept the THROW verb-only for the dynamite because it seems more logic with this item.
I even went so far as lassoing from atop the bridge.
Yes, but there was a bug on my part, back in the beta, allowing you to do it... ;)

Selmiak, thanks for your video. (It's odd to see a video on youtube with your own game... :-D)

Hm. I bugged myself to the highscore...
You definitely beat the game :-D
Well... got to look at this... (I must have missed some "DoOnceOnly" conditions...)

Now go and make more of this with your brother! :=
Thanks, that's very encouraging... ;)

Edit : game updated to version 1.1.0 (some bug fix / Gameplay change : one item can now be used with USE and THROW action)

Thanks all for the kind words.
I'm really happy that you enjoyed playing it.

The only thing you might want to add...
About the "fade to black" actions : yes... that's exactly what you said... animations are difficult and take so much time to be done that we used this simple "trick". Maybe we'll do a deluxe version with more animations if we have time! ;)

I have no idea about the cause of your problem but I'd use instead an alternative driver such as BASS MIDI driver, that uses Soundfont instruments files and provide a much better MIDI quality than default Windows MIDI driver.

Edit : a good and free soundfont working with the BASS driver can be found here.

Found a bug
Thanks for the input Kumpel. I knew bugs would emerge but I wouldn't have suspected this one... :-\
It's fixed in the new version.
I hope you found a way to go on in the game...

Yes... we thought about it... but the ground is not a hotspot (technically, it would be complicated if it were) - we could have choosen the water instead... yes... but we had a nice drain which wanted so badly to be used...:-D

This looks awesome, but please, for the love of god, offer a zip file as alternative download.
Done! ;) (both downloads are now available on the page). I'll add a Linux version too, but I must find a way to test it before...

I hope you'll like playing it...

I Want Out! is an escape-the-room game.
It's a short game that should require about one hour of gameplay.

About the game creation...
We imposed ourself the following rules :
- 320x200,
- 9-verb interface, in LucasArt style,
- only one room,
- realistic puzzles (at least, not far fetched ones).

This is our first game and we tried to make the best out of it and to learn the most out of it, too...
We tried to modernize the retro style by using 32-bits colors, transparency, maximum smoothness, an inventory interface that doesn't hide the bottom of the screen.
It took us about a year and a half on our spare time...
We started the game using AGS 3.3.5 IIRC and then used AGS 3.4.0 and 3.4.1...

The story
You are called by a kid, asking for help.
He is trapped in a mysterious place.
Can you help him to get out?

The team
Nicolas (me) ... story, coding, some graphics and animations, english translation
Matthieu (my brother) ... story, graphics, animations

Their contribution was greatly appreciated.

Thanks to Toxic Tuba for the German translation.
Thanks to Alexander Preymak for the Russian translation.
