Server migration
« on: 08 Sep 2012, 20:46 »
The server hosting the forums will be changing shortly.  CJ and I should have access to the new server tomorrow, and will be working to set it up as soon as possible.  The current server (running on IP address will be unavailable from 15th September, and adventuregamestudio.co.uk will redirect to a new IP address (currently unconfirmed).

This means there is likely to be at least one period of downtime of the forums over the next week.  Users may also be unable to access adventuregamestudio.co.uk until their ISP updates its nameservers (which usually doesn't take more than 24 hours).  I will post an update when this is likely to be happening.

Should there be a communications channel open, namely the AGS Blog? Basically to rephrase my malformed sentence, I'm suggesting that any updates on how the maintenance on the site is going, should perhaps be done via the AGS Blog? Since people tend to visit it a lot when there's a downtime.

Regardless, I hope all goes well and smooth.

That would make sense.  You could either give access to my Google account, or I can email / Facebook (just added you!) you if there's news.

Nope, that runs on ags.org, not ags.co.uk.

That seems to have worked, SSH / Dualnames.  I'll stick a post up as and when something seems to be happening.

So just as we were preparing the new server for the migration, the old one decided to completely break.  This unfortunately means that the forums and games page databases on this new server are a few days out of date - all posts, changes and downloads made over the last few days (not that there have been many, as the site has been down so much!) are lost.

However, we are now on a shiny new server, so hopefully the previous frequent downtimes will be cured!

YAY! Now I know where all my posts went to and why I couldn't get in this week. ;)

Thanks. :)

Just an FYI: I have no clue what is going on, but I'm in the US and the server is still very sluggish for me. It works, but is sluggish. Just wanted to see if it was me somehow or what.

The server seems fine to me in the UK, both at home and at work.  Can any other US users confirm whether it's slow for them?

Yeah, I've noticed varied speeds at times (UK).

Has anyone else been having trouble with not receiving forum notifications as they should?

I don't get any notifications right now - even if there should have been some.

As I clearly said, no.

Has anyone else been having trouble with not receiving forum notifications as they should?

The forum can't send mail yet,  CJ is looking into it.

As for the speed issues, there are plans that will hopefully sort it out, but those affected will have to live with it for the time being, I'm afraid.

Damn...ok. and maybe it's not in your first post, you never said it couldn't be restored. That's why I asked.

It seems like since the server transition/db crash I no longer get notified of PMs by email.
I checked my spam folder and also made sure the option in the PM settings is set to "Always".

The last PM notification I received is from September 7th, I should have gotten two today though.

(Also, the "skill icons" beneath the avatar still show the default text on mouse over, not the custom one entered in the profile. And is there any way to restore the feature that hovering over the profile name shows the original username?)

The server can't send email currently.  It will soon.

The other things will be fixed at some point, but since they aren't urgent, don't hold your breath!
