Football fever is nearly upon us and suddenly we're all armchair experts again.
After a successful World Cup Prediction League in 2014, the world's attentions turn to France on June 10th for
UEFA Euro 2016.

Here's how the prediction league works: Predict the scores, earn points, the person with the most points at the end of the tournament wins the League.

There are some rules, however.  Please read them carefully:
(in spoiler tags to save space)
Spoiler
Rules

(1) I will start taking predictions for the 36 group stage games from the moment I post the thread in AGS and will continue to accept predictions for group stage games until after all teams have played one game (namely, June 14th is your last chance to submit predictions for group stage games).

(2) The League will be closed to new participants on June 14. This is to allow for late comers, though obviously you may not submit predictions for games that have already been played. It is still worth joining even if you join late, because points in later rounds are worth more.

(3a) Scoring will work like this for each game:

If you predict the correct RESULT you score ONE point (RESULT here means correctly predicting the winning team or correctly predicting a tie/draw).
If you predict the correct SCORE you score THREE points (SCORE here means correctly predicting the actual scoreline).
If you FAIL to make a correct prediction you score NIL points
If you FAIL to submit a prediction for a game before the game's kick-off time, you will LOSE one point***

***You will not be penalised for the games you missed if you joined late, but once you join you will be expected to submit a prediction for all future games, and will be deducted one point for each game you fail to make a prediction for.

(3b) During the knockout stages all points are DOUBLED (so TWO points for correct RESULT or SIX points for correct SCORE). For the FINAL all points will be TRIPLED (THREE for RESULT or NINE for SCORE).  I hope this will add some excitement.

(3c) WILDCARD. Every player will have a WILDCARD to be used for any game during the group stages. This will TRIPLE your score for that game, so use it wisely. To play your WILDCARD, clearly state your intention along with your prediction for the game in question.

(4a) How you submit your predictions is up to you, you can do all 36 group stage games now, before the tournament starts, or you can do them in drips and drabs.  Though, the more you do in one batch the easier the data will be for me to manage. Ideally, you'll submit a nice full list of 36 predictions before the tournament even starts, though this is not a rule.

(4b) Please bear in mind that each prediction must be submitted before the relevant game kicks off, so it is probably wise to get them done early.

(5) The latter knockout stages are, for obvious reasons, closed to predictions during the majority of the group stage.  However, you may start submitting predictions for the outcomes of knockout stage games from the moment the fixture is decided up until the game's kick-off time. I will prompt for relevant predictions when the time comes.

(6) A submission is considered 'submitted' if it has been posted in the AGS thread OR PM'ed to me.  The former will be better if you want to share your predictions with other people, although they will all be visible on the Spreadsheet for anyone to see.  To reiterate, The AGS thread and AGS Private Message are the only two ways to submit predictions.  Predictions received by any other means will not count.

(7) Once you have submitted a prediction for a game, it cannot be changed (unless you can convince me there is an extremely good reason for doing so).

(8a) When submitting predctions please use the following format:

Date     k/oTime   TeamA - v - TeamB

swapping the dashes (*) for the number of goals you think each team will score. For example:

Jun-10   20:00   France   -   vs   -   Romania
Jun-11   14:00   Albania   -   vs   -   Switzerland

(8b) Please use the template provided in Spoiler Tags below. It will help you make your predictions more easily and help me to see them and manage them appropriately.  Preferably, make them bold to make them stand out and easier to manage

(9) Only results after normal time count (90 mins + time added on).  Goals scored during extra time or penalties will not be included. So, if you predicted a 1-1 draw and the game goes on to extra tme and finishes 2-1, you will still win the points provided the score at the regular full-time whistle was 1-1.

(10) Tie-break situations. In the event of a tie-break situation where two teams have the same number of POINTS, the player with the highest number of correct SCORES will win. If they are still level, it will go to the player with the highest number of correct RESULTS. If it is STILL level, the person with the fewest deductions will win. And if it is still level after all that, there will be a fight to the death.

I will be maintaining THIS SPREADSHEET and league table on a publicly viewable document. I will also keep the league table in this first post as updated as possible, though I won't always be able to update things straight away. But rest assured, if you submitted a valid prediction before the deadline, it will count, even if you can't see it reflected in the spreadsheet straight away. It just means I'm probably asleep or at work.  I'm in the Japanese time-zone through this, so please bear with me.

I think that's all for now. Let me know if you have any Queries.

Good Luck and Happy Predicting!

I've made it all the way to England vs Wales now (a match I remember watching with my granddad about 3 decades ago, back when Ian Rush was my favourite player).  I just can't call it atm... will have another look at the remaining fixtures later and come up with some scorelines.  Not feeling particularly confident about any of them - not enough to use my Wild Card anyway!

The most fascinating thing is that both Germany and Spain seem to have gone off the boil... will they bring back their A game in time for the tournament?

Well, Germany is usually at least decent when they play in tournaments, no matter how good or bad they played beforehand...

True, very true.  More interesting to see whether Spain can bounce back really.  Or could Portugal finally turn up properly at a big tournament?

I actually think England might do pretty well this time and get into the semis perhaps.  Pretty tidy if somewhat unimaginative squad, but if Vardy and Kane are really firing, there's every chance of getting some impressive results.  Nice to see Wales back in the big time, when was the last time they qualified for a tournament?

Haggis

I would agree re: England - in Harry Kane they finally have a proper front man again. What I would worry about is the central spine behind him, although I think Chris Smalling is looking good at the moment... especially when compared with calamity Cahill. Still, expect them to crash out at the group stage while Wales qualify - Wales to do a Leicester.

Germany will probably win it though... although the hosts could be a contender.

CaptainD

England's midfield is a worry, you do wonder where the defence-splitting passes are going to come from.  I think they have a lot of players that on their day can be very, very good though, and the much maligned Milner is an assist machine.

In all honesty I would love Wales to do well, but if Bale (or, to a lesser extent, Allen) gets injured, I wonder if they've got enough about them to bother any of the better sides.  Bale provides the moments of genius and Allen keeps them ticking over in midfield.

Would like to see someone new win it, would be boring if Germany won again! :-D  It would be absolutely hilarious if Northern Ireland or Albania won it.

Haggis

As much as it hates me to say it, Milner under Klopp looks like a new player (much like most of Liverpool's squad) and might actually have some value. To be honest, if England are going to stand a chance, G-unit Neville needs to get his boots dusted down - he's the difference maker ;)

Chris Coleman as we speak is busy packaging Bale up in bubble wrap, foam and horse placenta.

In terms of the big teams, I wouldn't mind seeing France or Portugal win it - looking forward to seeing more of Renato Sanches after all the hype.

It would be phenomenal if another Greece/Leicester style story happened.

CaptainD

As a Liverpool fan I've been very happy to see Lovren and Milner in particularly look like new men under the Klopp regime! ;-D But worried we'll keep Henderson... I know he's had injury troubles but honestly he's been awful in every match I've seen this season (admittedly not all that many).  Looking forward to Wednesday!!!

Anyone else going to join in this league btw?

Here's my random scores - Austria Hungary is going to be a cracker.
We have a joke here:
"I'm going to a football game" - "Who is playing?" - "Austria-Hungary" - "Against whom?" (laugh)

That's going be one to watch. Especially if I'm right in saying it's the first time they've played each other for almost ten years (and the first "competitive" game for almost 30).
