Is this that president (ummm... Garfield?) who got shot by an assassin (Giteau?) and the doctors at the time were clueless and awful and just made things worse by poking around in the wound without washing their hands properly (even though this took place after Semmelweis had demonstrated the importance of hygiene in surgery)?

Edit: Oh wait, that doesn't fit since that was definitely a bullet. Nevermind.

OK, so:

Was the surgery that was required beyond the medical science of the time?
Was the firearm that fired the shot a hand-carried arm (handgun, long gun or similar)? Redundant, so instead: Was the firearm a cannon, torpedo, harpoon or similar large gun?
Does anyone involved have any kind of religious, philosophical or moral objection to the surgery?

Cassiebsg

Can the doctors come close enough to the wounded man to perform an operation?
Does the man require an operation to survive?
