First off, sorry if this is in the wrong category...

I've downloaded several of the games created with ags, but I can't hear any music in it. At first I couldn't even get sounds, but then I canged the "MIDI Music" in the settings into Win32 MIDI Mapper, so now I get all the other sounds, but still I don't get music. Whenever I open a game, it brings this error message: "Unable to initialize your audio hardware. [Problem: Failed to init digital sound driver]"... I've tried to change the "Digital Sound" into "Default WaveOut Device", but that just made the effects worse...

I can't find this in any faqs, so could anybody help?

(Edit): Hmm... Now I tried Ben Jordan 1 again, this time with the "MIDI Music" as "Default MCI Music Device", and  "Digital Sound" as "Default Waveout Service", and well, at least I got some music, but it (as all other sounds) were very poor quality... Then I tried with the "Digit. Sound" still the same and "MIDI Music" again as "Win32 MIDI Mapper", but now I didn't get any sounds...  :P :-\

Mr Flibble

Hmm. Try setting it on the direct sound thingy, but upgrade your DirectX.
Ah! There is no emoticon for what I'm feeling!

Sounds like your version of DirectX is out of date -- so yes, try installing the latest DirectX from the Microsoft website.

I have the same problem, for ben jordan case # 4, tried downloading & installing directX, but it didn't work. I have Windows XP, can anybody help?

Edit:

Sorry!! I got it. There was a setting for sound I missed, thanks anyway!

strazer

What setting was it?

And please edit your previous post instead of double-posting. Thank you.

I too have this problem.  With most (not all) AGS games I play, I have two options.

I can run it on DirectSound, with no music. Or WaveOut, with music but scratchy FX.  Some games, as I said, don't have this problem, such as the Apprentice series or King's Quest remakes.  Some that do: Two of a Kind, 5 Days a Stranger, Bestowers of Eternity.  Do these games use a certain type of sound?

I'm running Windows XP, and my DirectX is fully updated.  I also have a SoundMAX Integrated Audio Device, if it helps.

Pumaman

5 Days, Bestowers and TOAK use MIDI music if I remember correctly, whereas Apprentice and KQVGA have digital music soundtracks. Sounds like there's some strange issue where you can't use DirectSound and MIDI at the same time, but I'm not really sure why that would happen.

Do you get an "unable to initialize music" message at startup, or does it just not play anything?

SmartFish13

I don't get that message. Ã, I do when I switch it to Win32 Midi Mapper (which doesn't solve the problem). Ã, And I still get clean FX with DirectSound, just no music.

Updated my audio driver yesterday, and that didn't solve the problem.

Your MIDI music volume is turned up and not muted in your windows sound volume settings, right?

SmartFish13

Actually, MIDI isn't listed in the Volume Control settings (including all advanced and non-default controls).  And everything that is listed is not muted or at zero.

Pumaman

Hmm, your sound card does do midi, right?

Smartfish13

In SoundMAX's control panel, there is an option for different sound sets to play MIDI files (none of these make a difference).  The manual talks about a MIDI Music Synthesizer that can run straight .MID files, but it doesn't say anything about running music and sound effects together, or music that's hidden inside a larger file.

So I'm not sure if it's the sound card or not; it does claim to support midi.
