Title: AGS Not Starting! (SOLVED)
Post by: ScottDoom on Sat 21/01/2006 21:43:45
Well I finished my demo up the other day for my game, and today I was going to correct a bug in it and add more to the "tutorial" at the beginning so I double-click agsedit.exe and I see the splash logo screen flash quickly and then it goes away... So I try again, same thing. I restart my computer, and double click agsedit.exe again. Now I get:

Quote
agsedit.exe - Application Error
--
The application failed to initialize properly (0x0000005). Click on OK to terminate the application.
OK

:'(

Have you tried reinstalling AGS?

No, I'm going too... I'm pretty sure that'll fix it. But why would it act up all of a sudden like this? I didn't change anything or do anything differently.

I reinstalled AGS and it's still not working.  :'( I've never had anything like this happen before.

Probably some problem with your computer, can you check if there're other resident programmes running in the background? They may interfere with other programmes.

Have you run a virus and spyware check lately?

That's the first thing I do when something like this goes wrong. I ran AntiVir Personal and Spybot Search & Destroy right away, after updating each of them.

I have no new programs running in the background...

Could be some kind of corrupted driver or some similar problem or conflict.

If this is a recent problem, then you may attempt to do a System Restore choosing a date that your computer was still working fine (before the problems occured).

Usually System Restore can be found by clicking on "Start", then "All Programs", "Accessories", "System Tools", then "System Restore".

You might want to make a backup copy of any recent changes you had made to your AGS-made-project before attempting the System Restore.

   Good luck.

That would require XP would it not?

Well, I have XP but I do not believe in Windows Restore. That thing is whack and as far as I know don't I have to keep it updated with restore points?

Alright, not only is AGS failing to load but when I tried to run my demo game I had made with it but not a few days ago, that won't load. Same error.

The only thing different with my system I have done is plugging in a Logitech Dual Action gamepad, which I unplugged and removed to see if that helped. It didn't.

Is it just AGS giving you problems? Do all your other programs and games still work?

The message indicates that AGS isn't even managing to begin to start up, so it indicates some sort of system configuration problem rather than an AGS bug.

Every other program works normally. Need for Speed: Most Wanted, Mount & Blade, Jasc Paint Shop Pro 7, Trillian, and Opera are the only things I really use. eMule and Windows Media Player too, oh and WinAmp. AGS just went whack.

Yeah, I forgot to mention that "System Restore" won't be on some older versions of Windows (such as 95, 98). But as far as I know it is on ME, 2000, NT and XP.

System Restore points are usually created automatically from time to time, so if you're still having troubles it might be worth a try, but if you don't have confidence in trying that then you will need to try and figure out what is causing your problems. Ã, There's been a few times before when my computer was messed up and I wasn't able to track down what was the cause of the problems and doing a System Restore fixed the problems.

Perhaps try running AGS from "Safe Mode". Ã, You can usually get into safe mode by tapping the "F8" key on starting up the computer and before Windows starts loading in, which should bring up a "boot menu" and having Safe Mode as one of the boot-up options.

If AGS does run ok in safe mode, then chances are some other program, drivers or application that would normally load in may be causing some conflict preventing it from running properly.

Another thing to try could be to re-install AGS but into a new/different directory. Maybe for some strange reason the current directory in which the AGS program resides on your computer is messed up somehow?

You might also consider installing the most recent version of drivers for your graphic and sound cards and/or installing the most recent verison of DirectX, but not knowing what the cause of the problem is, that may or may not help.

Good luck.

Ok... I also can't even play any other game made with AGS!

Edit: Woohoo! I fixed it. Although I had tried a restart before, I did another restart again and now it works. Weird stuff, but it's fixed now.

Problems that magically fix themselves tend to come back...so just be careful not to do what you did to break it again :P.

Well, the last thing AGS-related I did before it messed up was testing the tech demo of Amulet of Kings! So I blame them. Hahah...

No, but I think somehow my Logitech USB gamepad conflicted or something... But I have no clue. I'm just glad it fixed itself.

(Hello everyone, new to the forum, too bad my first post is a crazy-problem kinda question.)

I have what seems to be the exact same problem as ScottDoom :-/

When I try to start AGS like any other day, the splash screen comes up, one instance of ags shows up in the task bar, and very quickly another one blips up and dissappears next too it. Then nothing. Not even an error message, and I can't right-click it and close it from the taskbar, must end the process.

Things Ive tried:
- Rebooting, many times and also in between all the other things Ive tried.
- Uninstalling programs that I might have installed after using AGS the last time. The only program I can remember installing is blender though.
- Turning off as many background processes as possible.
- Spyware and virus check.
- Starting windows in Safe Mode

Nothing changes. I dont even get the error message SCott got. All other functions and programs in the computer seems to be unaffected.

The only thing I can think of now i formatting the harddrive and reinstalling windows  :'(

Any ideas would be insanely appreciated.

Do you happen to know if you've installed any applications between when AGS last worked, and when the problem started happening?
Title: Re: AGS Not Starting! (SOLVED)

Yeah, Blender and..  yeah! The Windows Media Player 11 Beta! (Don't ask me why) I wonder if I can get that out of my system though... Ill give that a try.

Still I think its weird.  ???

It does sound strange, I'm not really sure what could be causing that.

Uninstalled Media Player 11 and its Media Format 11. Rebooted in between, but no. Same thing. The process takes up about 17Mb though.

Can't think of any other program I have installed after AGS worked the last time.

Find this pretty annoying, as I was just going to finish my first test game to show my group of people that we could use this engine for the game we are developing :-\

Has anyone else except me and Scott experienced this?

Yey, I SOLVED it! At least what was wrong in my case (don't think it applies to Scotts case).
I started to think about when and where I used AGS the last time, and realized it was not at home, but in an office where I bring my laptop and use it in a dual screen environment. So, what happened was that AGS started as normal, just that I could not _see_ it, cause I closed it on the other monitor,  not the main laptop one. After some alt+spacing and arrowkeying, the window came sliding in from the left! It had been working the whole time!! Gaaaah!

Im relieved though, that it was not a severe bug, just a case of AGS not checking wether it is visible or not. Or something.
