Hi Pumaman (aka Chris), I've started a thread at this url:
http://www.miez.nl/yabbse/index.php?topic=1044.msg13495#msg13495

about Indy Fountain of Youth demo not responding to my mouse cursor when the game is windowed: I can start the game but the Screen 7 logo remains displayed for a little while (in fact, it stays on until I move the window, after which I see the startup screen, but the Windoze mouse cursor disappears when I move it into that window (which does have the focus, BTW) I don't ever ge to see the game cursor, And therefore I cannot do anything with the game itself, apart from shutting it down with Alt+F4 (I presume a click on the X-window-button will also work, but I'm a keen keyboard user myself.

I was advised to come here because ithey use AGS to develop the game, so here I am.

DoorKnobHandle

Exactly, I told DutchMarco to post here.

The FoY-demo doesn't do anything wierd code-wise there with the cursor - and even if it did, it shouldn't be possible to eliminate the mouse-cursor only if in windowed-mode, right? And since nobody else has ever encountered this problem while this single user is able to replicate it every time, it all smells like some specific hardware/software/driver/whatever special problem. The FoY-Demo was compiled with version 2.72.

DutchMarco

FYI (not Fountain of Your Information), I use an Asus PCIE-graphics card, EN8400GS. And I use XP SP1, I have a newly installled PC (I'm very pleased with my much more free HD-space now and my Intel Core quad CPU)

Sorry I don't knoe ehat other tehnical details you'd like to hear (if any), but please ask! This is a weird issue and I've never come across it before.

DutchMarco

I just downloaded the A tale of 2 Kingdoms demo and have run into the same problem again, in fact, when I brought this Firefox window to the front I kept seeing the window " Paralax editor" (the title of the ATOTK-window) in the taskbar and could no longer bring it to the front again. I used the desktop icon to minimize all windows and ever since the ATOTK-window remained minimized.I could not close the window by right clicking on it and closing it;  By using Task mgmt I was *eventually* able to shut down the game.

Khris

Upgrade to SP2, latest DirectX and latest graphics card drivers.

Pumaman

Yes, definitely do what KhrisMUC says first. If there's a problem with DirectInput for some reason, it could cause the mouse not to work.

Radiant

If you're running windowed, try switching to full-screen. Or vice versa.

DutchMarco

]fee, KhrisMUC and Pumaman, I personally, like SP1. SP2 introduces all sorts of other things which I'm not too happy about, like DRM.

Radiant, I can't run full-screen, my PCI-E graphics card doesn't know that resolution. Oh, the good old DOS-days... don't remember any problems with low screen resolutions not being supported in my OS/2-days... (the hardware was different wayback then, also, but I still have one of those fab PS/2 keyboards) Anyway, I need to run winsetup.exe to choose windowed mode becauseusing 320x200 x 16 bit is not aupported, I then try 640x400, ignore the warning that this game wasn't designed for this res. and the game starts in FS mode, I hear the noises (jungle sounds and indy theme) at a black screen, with an enlarged window frame with what would be a clickable "minimize" button if I had a mouse cursor.I also see part of the X-button (can't tell if it's greyed out)

In fact, I can run Lemmings in full screen without any trouble, using the mouse. (search for "lemmings xp"and you'll find a site (some PC magazine) to download it from.

I do believe I've installed DX10. over a fresh installation of XP SP1. There was a tool to show which DX-version you're on, what was it called again?

There, this sheds a new light on my problems, doesn't it?

Rui 'Trovatore' Pires

I've had this happen a couple of times.

It's usually happened if my windowed game lost focus to something else WHILE the game was initializing. Eventually I learned to just let it load and THEN I started to multitask.

Does this help?
Reach for the moon. Even if you miss, you'll land among the stars.

You can avoid the warning by keeping 320x200 and using DirectDraw5 + the x2 filter.
This might fix your problem.

And please, do install SP2. I have SP3, had SP2 and didn't have any issues ever, let alone DRM ones.

DutchMarco

Rui, the proble, is not it's loosing focus and regaining it. I'm quite a single-tasked gamer, at most I'll drink something during the game, or answer the phone or go to the bathroom (game paused in both cases).

I'll reconsider SP2. I was hoping having DX 10 installed would negate the need for SP2.

Pumaman

As far as I know DX 10 is only available for Vista, so on XP you'd need DX 9.0c. Making sure you have the latest version installed is definitely a good idea.

DutchMarco

Chances are I have 9.0something installed then. Just don't go asking me to install Vista (please)!

I had this PC newly installed, so I tried installing new bits only. It's rather hard to find DX8.x on MS's site nowadays, I reckon. They'll want to only make available 9 or 10.

So can anyone tell me which tool is used to detect the number of the  installed version?

voh

Click start, choose run, and type in "dxdiag", this will start up the DirectX Diagnostics app, which also shows what version you're running.
Still here.

DutchMarco

I'm embarassed to admit that I seem to be running v5. I thought I had installed a newer version! Will do so ASAP and let you know.

DutchMarco

OK I installed DX9 and vvverified it with DXDiag, (just to be sure), Now, I still have problems running this game. (I run it windowed BTW) I get to hear all the nice soundeffects and music, but I get to see an empty window frame. It seems to draw OK (ish; most of the window is painted over, but some bits of the window's background  are sitill visible in the frame, I believe even moving it moves this "'residue"  with theframe) inside this frame if I change focus to another window.

I need to run it in 640x400, the original 320x200 causes problems and won't run the game.

Pumaman

Does it work full screen? What error do you get with 320x200 windowed? What colour depth is your desktop?

DutchMarco

It seems as if the fact that SP2 got installed automatically by the Windoze XP updater service, solved my earlier problems with games not running properly. I haven't tried the FoY demo that I had problems with earlier, but I had problems with other games as well. Even the IndyLC2demo works OK, so do Fatman and a few other games. Just wanted to let you know, I couldn't find the old thread anymore so I made a new one.
