Title: Bug/error message thing for Apprentice 2
Post by: on Fri 29/07/2005 21:14:41
Hi,
I downloaded The Apprentice 2 at http://herculeaneffort.adventuredevelopers.com/

I couldn't start the game. I double-clicked the icon and I got a message, (with the title "ILLEGAL EXCEPTION"), saying that I should note down the numbers to a CJ in the tech forums. Anyway here's the message:
"An exception 0xC0000005 occured in ACWIN.EXE at EIP = 0xBFF9BB6B (strcpy/strcat); program pointer is +0, ACI version 2.61.747, gtags (0,0)

AGS cannot continue , this exception was fatal..."

...And then it says that I should note the numbers etc. Hope I didn't give some kind of IP or something (I'm no computer expert).

Any help would be appreciated. AGS seems to be a make-your-own-adventure-game, but I just downloaded this to play it so I just need info on how to solve this problem so I can play the game.Ã,  If you need more specific info let me know.

Can you try running the Setup program and changing the sound and music settings, and see if it helps at all. Also, try switching on/off Windowed mode.

Also, is your DirectX version up to date?

Ok I tried all that but it still gave me that error message.

BTW I have a win98 computer and just so you know I also played The Apprentice 1 and that one ran perfectly fine, except for the somewhat distorted subtitles. But perhaps Apprentice 1 didn't run on AGS or something

Apprentice 1 & 2 were both made with AGS.

I'm not sure what to suggest, I'm afraid. I don't remember anyone else having a problem like this, and if you've tried disabling sound and music and updating DirectX and it still happens, I'm at a bit of a loss as to what it could be.

Has anyone else had problems playing Apprentice 2?

I really want to play this game. I suppose those numbers in the error message didn't say anything to you either. Well, thanks anyway.

There have been a few bugs fixed since the AGS version that Apprentice 2 was made with. You could try to run it with a newer version of the engine, though it may not work.

To try this, download the latest AGS zip file (ags_27) from the download page. Then, extract the ACWIN.EXE file and copy it to the Apprentice folder.

Then, rename the Apprentice EXE file to AC2GAME.DAT.

Finally, double-click the ACWIN.EXE file.

I tried that but it didn't detect the game. Thanks anyway. I'll problably manage to play it on another computer or in the future or something.
I would close down this topic if I knew how, but oh well.

If you've got the "Hide file extensions" option turned on in Windows, turn it off and then make sure that the apprentice exe is actually renamed to "ac2game.dat" and not "ac2game.dat.exe" or anything like that.
