Title: Can't get any AGS games to run
Post by: Mats Berglinn on Mon 02/02/2004 10:01:26
I don't know if this the right forum but anyway...

I have a problem. When I try to either run a game made by AGS or testing my own gmaes made with AGS the games just won't run, they just leave a blackscreen if I play it on a full-screen. If I play them as a window, the screen doesn't appear either but if I switch from between the window and the programs the first screen may appear but it freezes and won't run any further. I don't know what's wrong but I doubt it has to do with the graphic card or the resolutions of the games (I have tested it on different games) and there isn't any viruses on my PC as I know it. Does someone know what could possibly be wrong? If you do, please, tell me because I can't let this go on forever, never being able to make or play any AGS games. I have currently Windows XP on my PC after switching harddrives.

Thanks in advice.

Can't offer any advice.  I've got the same prob on my work computer.  Exactly the same problem except with Win2k.  The only AGS game I've had work was some alphatest demo Scotch made.  If I figure anything out, I'll letcha know.

Try XP's compitability (sp?) mode... Set it to Win98 or something, see if it helps...

Has this always happened to you, so you've never been able to play any AGS games?

Aside from making sure you have DirectX 9 and the latest graphics and sound card drivers for your PC, one thing to try is loading the AGS game setup program, and disabling sound and music - see if that has any effect.

Since I seem to have an identical prob with my work machine I've messed around with it quite a bit.  Perhaps it's some DX bug with ancient video cards.  This thing's running a 500mhz P-II and Riva128 w/ 8M.  I disabled digital sound/midi and the problem is identical. Out of curiosity and to help pinpoint it, could you post system specs, Mats? (In particular, the videocard make/model/memsize).

I have tried to disable both sounds and music but it still won't work. A strange thing have happened. When I clicked away from the window then holding down the mouse-button to move it, the games do play up while you do it but if you let go it just freezes. I have also tesed to play other games like Grim Fandango and Curse of Monkey Island but they won't run up either. I have found out something curious when I tried to install DirectX from Escape From Monkey Island and a message appeared that said "A problem occued during the installation of DirectX: DirectX does not support the Windows version on the system".

I suspect that DirectX might be the cause but I don't know. Do you guys think that you can anything about it?

Mats: so, have you ever been able to run any of AGS games at all? Maybe you played them ok until replacing some hardware components (or switching to a different OS)? :P

Hey, I recently removed my old graphics card, an ELSA GeForce 3 Ti200 and temporarily put in an ELSA Winner 1000 Trio (S3-chip).

If the game is set to full-screen, it goes black for a second, then there is a black window, filling the whole screen:

(modified to just show icon, game title and window controls)

The game is running since CTRL+Q works.
Win2k SP4, DirectX 9.0b.
Windowed mode works ok.

Scorpiorus: Yes, I could play AGS games before the switching of the hardware. The reason for switching hardware was that my PC froze if you didn't do a thing.

btw, what color depth you were running it at?

So, how comprehensive was the upgrade? I'm asking because if it's just a couple of peripheral devices that they can be a reason for that. Or did you switch the system completely?

32 bit.

I realize it's probably due to the immense oldness of said graphics card, but when reading this thread, it seemed to fit the problem description.
