Title: Crazy idea: Flash in AGS?
Post by: Janik on Wed 06/09/2006 06:28:17
Like the post subject says, it's a pretty crazy idea, but has anyone though of putting flash animations in AGS (somehow)? I've never done anything in flash, but the vector animation makes it look nice and smooth, without having to draw 1000000 sprites. I don't imagine actually integrating the two would be possible, but maybe exporting the animation for use in AGS?

Thoughts?

Yes, Robert Redford IV, somehow...

From my understanding, I think that for our Great Stroke Off (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/games.php?action=detail&id=540) game that Adrian (HillBilly) ,who did the art / graphics for the game, was using "flash" to originally draw things, then converted things over to a "png" format to port things to be used with AGS.Ã,  Well, if you wanted specifics though, it'd be better to ask da HillBilly (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?action=profile;u=565) hisself what tecniques he did and how he went about it.Ã,  ;D

I use flash all the time.  All the sprites, animations, and backgrounds in Anna (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/games.php?action=detail&id=607) and The Domestic Conspiracy Demo (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/games.php?action=detail&id=636) were done in Flash (except a few Photoshopped touchups).  I'm using similar techniques for much of my unannounced upcoming game, too.

I do this because I'm comfortable in Flash and I suck at animating, which Flash can help me with a lot.

However, with the animations, you still have to export them from Flash frame by frame and import them into AGS for best results.  If you'd like some tips on the different ways I do that quickly, PM me.

Domestic Conspiracy also has one movie file that I exported from Flash as a Quicktime Movie, and then converted to a better-compressed format.  This is a good way to do long, full-screen animations.

Ah so it's not that crazy after all :) ... Maybe I'll start playing with flash and see.

Thanks, I will check out those games to see how it looks.

I should mention that I've gotten a lot better at importing the graphics from Flash as will be evidenced in my upcoming game.  Anna and DomCon both have a lot of jagged edges on the sprites that could've been avoided.  .png files are your friend.
