This came up when I tried testing my first room:

hope it's not a common complaint and waste of your time :)
You'll have to give us more than that if you want us to solve the problem.
When does it happen? In what part of the script does it crush?
[Arggh, I just typed up a long-ish answer and clicked Post, but I hadn't filled out a Name and when I went back the post was gone. I'll just cover the bare basics this time.]
It crashes before loading up at all. I click File|Test game, an icon comes up in Windows' taskbar (WinXP), then it crashes and I get that error. I haven't done anything unusual, I just imported a background and drew some walkable areas and walk-behinds.
What other info can I give, that might be of help?
Also, I just noticed that the demo game from the AGS site (6-Day Assassin) also crashes before loading anything but an icon in the Windows taskbar, although it gives a generic Windows error instead of an AGS-specific one.
Try fiddle around a bit with the settings, using setup.exe. It's pretty common to encounter problems if your sound or graphics settings are set to something your computer can't handle.
Hmm, that's a crash initializing DirectSound.
What sound card do you have? Try upgrading to the latest DirectX version, and updating your sound card drivers.
Also, try switching to "WaveOut" in the Setup program.
