How to make a Map Screen

I will be putting a map screen in my game and I was wondering how to make it that locations appear after certain events are triggered.

My map screen is a room and it's locations are objects... any feedback would be appreciated.

set a global int to remember if the person has enabled the ability of going there, and on 'when char enters room' do a check to see if its enabled, and if it is, enableobject
