Title: Is there any way to retrieve game data from a compiled AGS game?
Post by: Dan_N on Mon 01/01/2007 13:21:22
Hello.

I didn't think this belonged in the beginners' technical, but if it does I know it'll be moved or deleted. This may sound stupid, but is there anyway to retrieve game data from a copiled AGS game? Sprite files, room files, anything. I don't want to "hack" the game (not that I know how) so that I can complete it or anything. In fact, I'm focusing on sprites and room backgrounds. What for? Well, I need something to do... I won't rip off the game, I assure you of that - lawyers scare me.

So, thanks in advance, can't wait for reply.

There is this revolutionary technology called [ALT]-[PRINT SCREEN]-Open Paint-[CTRL]-[V] -o-tron ;)

If you're just looking for sprites and room backgrounds, that will be no problem. Additionally, if the game in question is an AGS or freeware game, you could try to write the author a nice letter/e-mail/pm and ask for the sprites (of course, you should put him in the 'special thanks to'-section). If the game is commercial ("lawyers") you have no chance that way.

Some games also support screenshots by pressing F12 or some other key. Read the games instructions for this.
