Hi there, everyone. Long time no type.
For those of you who have no idea who I am, I have a radio series called 'Tierra de los Muertos', and I've recently been contacted by someone who wants to make it into a computer game. Now this guy is pretty awesome with 3D modelling. I'm not exaggerating when I say that either. But I have no knowledge of programming computer games... but there's a chance I'd be able to figure out AGS (I've tried to figure it out before, the only thing that nailed the coffin was lack of time)
So is it possible for 3D pictures to be imported and used as environments in the game? I think it's kinda a cheat way of making a 3D game, 3D rendered as it were. But is it possible?
If you mean pre-rendered 3d backdrops which are then imported as still backgrounds then yes.
If you mean real time then no.
Also, characters can't be 3d models either, just still sprites.
There is an engine that allows 3d models, I think it's the wintermute engine, though I may be wrong. I reccomend AGS though ;) :P.
Is it possible? You'll be rendering them into BMP files, won't you? Then of course, yes it will be possible. You can import any BMP file into AGS, regardless of what it's an image of.
Oh, and another thing: Descriptive title, descriptive title, descriptive title. :)
And I'll be adding this to the AGS Beginners' FAQ (http://www.harbinger-software.com/ags/faq).
It's possible, it doesn't look very good in my opinion (at least compared to a proper 3d engine game) but you can do it, yes.
There is no current public adventure game engine that allows for 3d characters like Grim Fandango, Wintermute did in one demo apparently but no longer (believe me I've looked around for one :) )
Norman Cooks is probably the best example of a 3d rendered game in AGS.
if you really want to use your 3d work optimally, you could try out 3dGamestudio. there website is www.conitec.com It's almost the same programming language as AGS (c++) and the engine of 3dgamestudio is considered as the best on the market. For less then $100 you have a version with wich you can make some neat games, though if you want to sell your games, you have to buy the prof. version wich is $899 :(
Or, you can download the full version, like I did. Yes, I concur with Minimi's suggestion if you intended to use 3D files and objects directly.
AGS was meant to emulate the older style Sierra/LEC games, none of which were 3D as we know them today. I say "as we know them today" because at the time King's Quest I was being sold as "true 3D!!!11111" :)
