Title: No named pipes under Windows 98
Post by: win98fan on Thu 15/04/2010 17:00:36
After installing AGS-3.1 on my Win98SE computer I got the following runtime error when running AGSeditor.exe:

System.InvalidOperationException: Unable to create pipe
at AGS.Editor.NamedPipesServer.ListenForClients(Object currentServer)
at System.Threading.ThreadHelper.ThreadStart_Context(Object state)
at System.Threading.ExecutionContext.Run(ExecutionContext executionContext, ContextCallback callback, Object state)
at System.Threading.ThreadHelper.ThreadStart(Object obj)

After poking around on my computer I discovered that named pipes are not implemented on my O/S!  Ordinary pipes do seem to be supported however.

According to the change log, creating these pipes was done to facilitate debugging.  If by debugging you mean the AGSeditor and not a game under development, then the end user probably wouldn’t care if that were removed.

If I choose to ignore the error message pop-ups I get other problems such as not being able to LOAD/SAVE the demo adventure when built as a stand-alone game.

Win98 support was discontinued; it's amazing you got that far with 3.1.
How do you even manage to run anything with all the trojans and worms eating all the CPU time? ;)

Well, according to the change log, win98 was discontinued since V3.1.1, so if he really was using V3.1, that platform was still supposed to be supported (though I think most people use XP or better when it came out, so it's actually unsure whether it really worked on win98 due to insufficient testing).

Windows 98 is no longer supported. As Khris says, it's so insecure and outdated that I would not recommend using it for anything, even AGS!
