Hey. I'm new to the AGS program, and wanted to see what it could do by playing some games...
When playing Larry Vales 1, there's no music and the spoken dialogue sounds chopped up and strange. Is it supposed to sound like this? Anyone have any idea what might cause this problem?

This game is pretty old. Several bugs might have been fixed in AGS since.

Do other AGS games work normally? How about other games and applications?

Possible solutions:

- Change sound devices via the game setup
- (Re-)Install (newer) sound card drivers
- (Re-)Install (newer) DirectX
- Run the game using a later AGS version (see also this and this)

Edit:

To see what AGS can do, take a look at some recent AGS award winners.

Yeah, other games mostly work fine, although I tried Permanant Daylight and had to mess with the setup to get the music to play, and I can't hear that game's sound effects, if it has any. Thanks for your help, anyway...  :P

Larry Vales is a DOS game, so it won't play sound properly in modern versions of Windows.  I'm pretty sure new drivers won't help, since they're even less likely to support DOS.  The best thing to do is try to run the game with a newer (windows) version of the engine, like Strazer said.

Or try VDMSound or DOSBox, great DOS emulators.
