Title: Play games from cd.
Post by: jetxl on Fri 19/09/2003 19:16:56
The compiled AGS game needs to be on your hard drive to play.
Could it be possible that only the config file and save games are saved on the hd?

Yes but the player must edit the config file manually .

Or you could just have the installer write to the config file..

Assuming some drive letters and directories, you could use a script something like the following to run a game from a cd.

cd  c:\tmp
m:\mygame.exe

The problem, of course, is you don't which drive the cd will be and you are not certain that the hd is drive c: or that it will have a tmp directory.

Keep us informed of your progress as I am sure a lot of people would like to know a goo way of doing this.

In order to run the game off a CD, you have to install the EXE file to the hard drive along with the Setup program, and add a line to acsetup.cfg:

[misc]
datadir=d:\game

where "d:\game" is the CD-ROM folder with the game files in it.

Instead of the "You have not enoug memory or you're trying to play from a cd" message, you could make an option to make/get the config file from another drive.

Hmm... Let the word be said!
Maybe the AGS setup can search automatically for the cd-drive, as all the other "commercial" products does or something. We "could" make a setup option for selecting the right drive as well though.

AGS is great, but it hasn't been focusing so much on protection of commercial developed games. Just look at Fatman.. The whole game unfolds on the harddrive, and the cd is completely useless :P

That's what I'm talking about... Protection.. for game release groups...

I would like to know who released the full version of Fatman on the net though..
That bastard >:(

actually, i believe he can.  i think he said he made it so that each one had some different number that you can access by playing the game and checking the info (or something like that) and then check that number to the list of numbers and names he sent the games too, and viola....  a nasty name calling retort can begin.
