Several colours in one font

Is it possible to have a font+outline with each character made up of more than one colour? For example, if you're going for an Indiana Jones fading effect with a couple of shades. I'm pretty sure this -isn't- possible but how could it be possible? I can only think of having each character made up of several "outlines" each making up a colour section of the font, then having the editor put them back together.

I don't think it is possible, but if you have few short messages in which you want to have fonts with different colors, you can actually use a picture that has message written in with different fonts/colors..

There is an outstanding request for bitmap fonts, which would make this possible. But if you implement that, then you lose the ability to colour the font differently for different charactres.

Kinoko

Ahhh, I see. So you can't have both SCI and bitmap fonts in the engine?

Pumaman

No, sorry, that was badly phrased. You could have both, but if you used a bitmap font you wouldn't be able to change its colour.

Anyway, it is on the to-do list, but there's no timeframe for when it might be implemented.

Kinoko

Ahhh right. Well, I was really just wondering out it and how it would work. I think it'd be a nice feature but I'm not gonna die without it.

If it's a palatted games, could you not have it so that one palette entry is the transparency, and another one is the "text colour" which AGS re-colours ingame to your chosen character's text colour?

It already is the case, what Kinoko was talking about is multi colour font. Since such font will contain more than one colour (like for example, some console games used rainbow coloured or gradient fonts), if you want it to be displayed differently for different characters you may need to find a way to change all the individual colours for the other characters.

Hue shifts?
If I have a greenish colour as the "text colour", and the font also contains a redish one....and the difference between them is 48, then when the "text colour" changes, the red colour changes to +48 hue from that one?

Though that's extremly limited...... But yeah, some type of multi font colouring would be good, but how often would it be used?

Or have the grayscales of a bitmapped font lighten/darken the base color of character.

Sounds like a lot of quite unnecessary work... :)
