Title: problem: this is not valid AGS game
Post by: on Wed 13/10/2004 15:48:02
Hi! For over six months I've been working on a AGS game with the title: PI Gary, The Farfalle Case. Twice, when I was nearly finished (writing the script for the big puzzle in it) and ran the game,  my computer rebooted and then suddenly Window XP said it was not a valid AGS-game anymore.
Question 1: Could there be something so wrong in my scripting (I use a lot of variables) that it actually affects my computer?
Question 2: What file does the engine read, to conclude whether it is or isn't a valid AGS-game?
Many thanks

Did you change the name of the game folder, the one with the compiled folder in it? Try making it shorter.

Hmmm, seemed to be a hardwareproblem rather than software. My CPU is getting too hot.
Anyway, luckily my backup .dta file was still working fine, so I can continue my work. (And I also had a backup somewhere else.)
I'll let you all know soon what I'm working on (but of course in a different forum). Thanks.

CPU overheating? Are you running a very much stuff at the same time, or do you have a slow CPU? I had a 266Mhz machine which ran big games just fine, on low res...

This should not be related to the CPU, I think.

I once had a CPU overheated (I was careless enough to block the fan with an Audio cable when I assembled the system) - it doesn't reboot, but goes on stand-by (at least with a P4).

Maybe your power supply is not constant. I had a computer which would reboot everytime a truck passed by the house, because an internal power cable had loose contacts.

If this happened (juice cut off) in the middle of saving the game it might have corrupted the HDD portion you were writing to, so some header date AGS is looking for wasn't there after the restart...

It may also be related to some rare AGS bugs that were hard to track. Anyway:

Backup early, backup often.

and your masterpieces should be safe. :=

Hmmm... WinXP?

I have another theory... My WinXP used to reboot itself every time I tried to set Quake 2 to use the default Opengl driver ( :P ), but the problem disappeared when I set Q2 to compitability mode. This is not relevant, apart from that XP seems to reboot on every critical error. (I haven't got any blue screens yet...) It might be that your HDD is corrupted, and when AGS tries to write, it clashes on the corrupted part, and produces an error which reboots the computer. Then, next you acces the files, they cannot be read because they are on the corrupted part.

Any chance? You might want to run Scandisk... (or whatever it was called in XP...)

Did you overclock?

If your computer spontaneously reboots while AGS is saving your game, then yes in all likelihood it will be corrupt. Really, you need to sort out your hardware problems :P
