Hey guys,
I was trying to learn how to use AGS to make a work training game, I do sales and leasing for Honda/Toyota.. Anyways I was playing around with AGS trying to figure it out when i did a 'test game'.. my monitor flickered then gave me a "out of range"  for my monitor. The computer froze so i restarted. now every time i try to start my computer it goes straight to the "out of range" as soon as windows tries to really start. I dont have admin rights otherwise i could try to really troubleshoot. running windows XP. Any ideas on what happend / how ot fix it without caling IT? I'v had problems with them in the past and dont want to invlove them if i dont have to, (i kind of called them idiots and dont want to have to eat my words)

Thanks

Sounds like your monitor doens't support the game resolution, so it couldn't display anything. At that point, you could have pressed Alt+X which should have aborted the game and returned your Windows resolution -- however, if you switched the computer off I believe XP tries to be clever by remembering the current resolution for when you restart (which is obviously the game's one).

Can you start in Safe Mode and change the resolution back?

For any future experiments, run the game's Setup program and select to run in a window; then before you go full-screen, tick "letterbox" and make sure that "85 hz" isn't ticked.

Also, a Nifty-Windows-Workaround(TM):

1. Turn off your computer.

2. Turn on your computer (restarting it works, but if you can't access windows, just hold the power button till the computer turns off, then turn it back on).

3. Wait until the "Windows XP" screen (the black one, not the blue one) appears.

4. At this point, immediately press the power button, and hold it down until the computer turns off.

5. Turn the computer back on.

6. A black screen will appear and tell you that you really messed Windows up the last time it tried to load, and ask you what you want to do about it.

7. Choose a mode to start Windows in (i.e. Safe mode with networking) with the keyboard, and press enter.

8. Wait for the blue "Welcome" screen to appear.

9. Log in to the "Administrator" account, and have fun changing absolutely anything you want at all. XD

That admin account was put there by Windows so if Windows can't start properly you can log in under safe-mode. It works just like a regular admin account (only under safe-mode), so you have fairly open access to the computer. ;D

I figured this out messing with the computers in the school library. For some reason one of the computers that is plugged into the network isn't reading the network, and I was trying to figure out why.

Of course, that assumes you know the local adminstrator password, which in a managed environment like an office, you likely don't.

Or simply press the F8 key (repeatedly) before Windows XP starts loading to bring up the menu.  ;)

BTW F8 is better for your computer and avoids any kind of data corruption...

basically... just as your POST screen is going off... slap the shit out of that F8 Key

BTW, you can't use F8 if your keyboard is a USB keyboard instead of a PS/2 keyboard (at least mine doesn't work. I can't even use this keyboard to choose an option off of the menu. I do have a PS/2 keyboard that I can use though :)).  And I know that there is an Administrator password set on my computer (not saying that I don't know what it is...), but using this method doesn't require me to type it in...

I think that depends on the mainboard/BIOS of your PC. I think some newer ones let you use USB keyboards in the BIOS setup.
