Problems on game shut down

I was playing around, trying to somehow locate the reason for this for weeks now, but no clue:

about every 5 - 6 times when I run a test game in the editor it would give me an error message. I mean it does not close properly but I get the ugly window bellow...

I get this one when using the demo game, my own game, anything else in between, no metter what method I use to quit the game (default quit, my own GUI, red-cross, task manager)

I am running on a 3.06 P4 wiht 512MB and WinXP, for chipset specs see bellow:

Integrated Graphic Processor: M661FX/M661MXÃ,  Ã,
AGP: SiS Acceleration Graphic PortÃ,  Ã,
IDE: SiS IDE ControllerÃ,  Ã,
USB:USB 1.1 x 2Ã,
USB: USB 2.0Ã,
Audio: SiS7012 Audio ControllerÃ,  Ã,
LAN: SiS900 Fast Ethernet ControllerÃ,  Ã,

It's not much of a problem but I just can't stand things not working properly (esp. if I can't figure out why!)

Anyone a clue?!?!

Yeah, it's a known issue and unfortunately hasn't been yet resolved because CJ can't replicate it.
Disabling both the music and digital sound seemed to solve the problem for a computer I was testing AGS on one day. Some people still get the error with the music and sounds disabled, though.

Try running the game directly from the Compiled folder, and see if this problem persists, if you don't have problems there, just test the game by executing it directly.
Don't use the test game feature of the editor anymore if you have problems with it.

Thanks for the answers.

I spent quite some timeÃ,  on this in the last days. Without getting close to a solution.

I can't replicate it on pupose too. It seems to come and go randomly. I tried it with newer and older AGS-Games with all kinds of set-ups. Would it help to post the windows message as well (the "helpful" "notify microsoft about this error" one)?

Didn't helpÃ,  :(

In that case, it's not related to the test game problem I guess, it's some other thing.

It may be helpful, depends on what it actually says. What would be really useful is if someone of those who face that problem could run a debug version of AGS to see maybe what source line the crash happens on.

Anyway, I think these sort of bugs is better to be discussed on the Technical forum.

Here is the (short version) of the exact message

Code: ags
 AppName: swq1.exe AppVer: 2.61.747.0 ModName: swq1.exe
ModVer: 2.61.747.0 Offset: 000abd66

(where "swq1" is my game in development)

Yep, I am just as humble to keep my questions with the "beginners" stuff, since this is like 22nd day I got AGS...

Whoever knows how, may move this thread...

Ah, but since it's a bug report it may definetly belong to the Technical Forum, so it would be more easy for CJ to find a bug-reporting thread.

Yeah could be a good idea, I remember talkies about the bug in question have raised before but I don't remember there was a thread being completely dedicated to this problem.

When does it give an error? Before the game starts, or while you are testing it?

You should re-install AGS. Maybe one of its files has been destroyed or misquoted (i do not know how could this happen).

I hoped i helped a bit.

It's rather strange that you're not getting the AGS crash message, but the default Windows one -- this suggests it's happening very late on in the shutdown process.

Does the screen seem to shut down properly before the crash appears (eg. does the game shut down from full screen and go back to the desktop)?

Can you try changing the sound, music and graphics settings in Setup and see if any of them make any difference?
