Timidity is a free MIDI software synthesizer. It's pretty fast and can be implanted to AGS. While Allegro uses standard Windows MIDI drivers that may sound very different on different computers, Timidity can provide unified sound since it's software. It supports advanced effects like instrument antialiasing. Most importantly, you can use your own soundfonts and patches with it.

Check it out: http://timidity.sourceforge.net/

Soundfont support is awesome... :)

Hmm, it appears to be an executable rather than a library. So I don't think it would be that easy to "implant to AGS," unless you know something more than my brief click around the site told me. There's a DLL version but it's labelled as "Japanese" and the link is broken, plus that would make midi playback Windows only.

Perhaps this would be useful for composers who wanted to write in midi and save to mp3?

I know some players that use Timidity libraries. For instance, GSPlayer MIDI for PocketPC platform.

I'm sure they would use professional soft synthesizers and hardware for that. :)

Looking at the source tar, I don't see an easy way to compile a lib/dll version.
And looking at GSPlayer's MIDI plugin, it seems to use an 11-year-old version of timidity.

Also, AGS would need to be bundled with GUS patches, which effectively rules it out I think. (GSPlayer's GM patch set is 2.1MB zipped.)

Do modern PCs really play midis badly? I'd like to hear the difference. Does anyone have a link to a recent comparison?

Actually the old DOS version of AGS engine had a softsyn feature, but that's history.
Though providing a softsyn feature to engines might be good it can also bloat the executable's size.
If you care for unified instrumental sound, use the mods series of format for music instead.

Yes, AGS used to support software wavetype synth, but it didn't prove very popular for a couple of reasons -- one being that people use MIDI because its small file size, and having to distribute a 3 MB patch file makes this less appealing.
