Hello, I downloaded this game, King's Quest I - the VGA remake, just this passed weekend.  I got it installed, and went to play, and with some minor error messages about the sound card, I had no problems starting the game, playing throgh it, and saving.  Yet, when I went back to play again a couple days later, I got this message:

---------------------------
Illegal exception
---------------------------
An exception 0xC0000005 occured in ACWIN.EXE at EIP = 0x004D2F3A ; program pointer is +0, ACI version 2.56.631, gtags (0,0)

AGS cannot continue, this exception was fatal. Please note down the numbers above, remember what you were doing at the time and notify CJ on the Tech forum.

Most versions of Windows allow you to press Ctrl+C now to copy this entire message to the clipboard for easy reporting.

I have a Windows 2000 Pro, all updated with the SP4.  I have a nVidia TNT2 with 32mb memory for a video card.  The sound is supposed to be provided by the motherboard, but currently have problems with being recognized and running correctly.  I have the lastest DirectX 9.0c installed also.

If anyone could help explain why this is happening, and how I can go about fixing it, it would be great.  Thanks.

Are you able to start the game, or does it give you that error message before the game starts?
KQVGA was made with a fairly old version of AGS so it'd be difficult for me to track down the problem; however, you can try changing the Sound Driver options in the Setup program and see if that helps you.

Matter of fact, this sort of error message pops out now and again with different games... though the error message says "Contact CJ", once the game is released, it's not really CJ's call, but the gamemaker's and the relevant thread in "Completed Games".

Maybe the wording on the message could be changed? Such as, "If you're the author, contact CJ, otherwise contact the game's author and let him know".

Well, really this type of error should never happen. If it does, it's useful to report it here so that I can investigate what might have caused it.

However, if an old version of AGS is involved, then there's not a lot that I can do with the information, really.

If I recall correctly, I also had a problem running the game in question (it crashed on death screens), which I solved by disabling the sound and music.

Later I tried running it with a newer version of the AGS engine and that worked fine even with sounds, although some things went strange, like looping of sound/music when a death message screen is displayed.
