Title: 'Resolution not supported' crash with QFG 4 1/2
Post by: on Sun 13/06/2004 20:25:10
I'm trying to get Quest for Glory 4 1/2 up and running, and running into crashes from every angle I approach it.Ã,  I've checked the forums and the knowledge base, and it's helped me get a little farther, but I'm still crashing.Ã,  The original game's homepage is down as well.Ã,  I'm on a Windows 2K machine.

The setup.exe only gives me 3 options, so I've turned the sound off and tried running at 320x200 and 640x480.

If I run the executable in Windows, it switches resolutions, blacks out, and then crashes to the desktop with no error.

If I run through a pure dos emulator, along with CWSDPMI, it starts to load the game and then gives me:

Adventure Creator v2.21 Interpreter
Copyright (c) 1999-2000 Chris Jones
ACI version 2.2.1.162
486 CPU detected.
Checking sound inits.
There was a problem initializing graphics mode 320x200.
(Problem: 'Resolution not supported')
Try to correct the problem, or seek help from the AGS homepage.

If I rename the executable to acgame.dat and try and run the game through AGS, I get:

Invalid file format. The file may be corrupt, or from a different version of AGS.
This engine can only run games made with AGS v2.5 or later.

*doh*.Ã,  Search the internet, but can't find a version of AGS v2.21 to try out.Ã,  Has anyone else been able to run this game?Ã,  I haven't seen reports of any other problems.Ã,  Is there something else I should try to get it running, or am I too late to the party for this one?Ã,  Thanks for your help guys.

Should make it work.

I think these older AGS versions should be made available from the download page.
The acwin.exe's at least.

That's a fix!Ã,  The older version of AGS did the trick.  Thanks scotch, the game looks great.

my question on this topic is more related to using the newer engine without errors.is it possible?

also can the game itself be edited to become compatible with the newest engine?

thanks in advance

Nope, unless the creators recompiled it using the source (and it's most probably that they need to fix something for it to compile, too), since there're several key versions which undergone critical changes that render more modern version of the engine might not work with some of the older games.
