Title: Resolution stays at 320x200 after exit game
Post by: on Sat 29/05/2004 14:55:23
Hello. I wonder if you could help me. I have installed Mom's QuestÃ,  on my W98 PC, 14'monitor, directX8. Well as soon as I executed the game the problem appeared: the screen size went suddenly VERY big, that is, enormous characters, see pixels, etc. I restarted and nothing happened I did some things like delete new registry entries, and delete the game (cannot uninstall), but nothing worked. I cannot work like this. Any ideas as to how to solve this problem? Thanks!

Did you right click on the screen and adjust your display properties?  AGS resets the resolution temporarily, and I assume it can get stuck.

Hello. Thanks for your answer. I did right click on the screen to configuration tab, but I cannot get down to screen area to change setting, so big is the image...

I believe that your monitor hasn't been adjusted for the resolution the game is running at. What if you tweak its horizontal and vertical size or(and) position?
Also, what about running the external setup program and change the resolution from there?

What version of Windows you running?
Ã,  Ã,
You can always start-up in "Safe-Mode", then adjust the properties from there as well.
One way is when you first start up your computer, and just before Windows starts to load in, try tapping (though sometimes may need to hold) your "F8" key I think? Or was it "F10" or "F4"?
But, Try "F8" first.. Usually that's it... if it works, then you'll get a windows "Start Up" menu, in which you can select "Safe Mode" from there.
As least from Safe-Mode it should by default set the display area so you can access everything you need to.

Right-click on a blank-spot on your desktop, then "Properties" then "Settings" then set your display properties to at least a minimum setting that will give you enough working space when you re-start windows in regular mode and then can properly adjust to the setting you want.

The second is to navigate the display properties dialog in your current display mode mode, but without using the mouse. Open the dialog and hit the Tab key six times to bring the focus to the tab control at the top of the dialog. Then use the cursor keys to select the Setting page. From there you can hit Tab again twice to select the screen resolution slider control and then decrease or increase the resolution with the left and right arrow keys (for your problem with your current display setting, I think you'd want to use the right arrow key). To confirm this, you can hit Tab twice more to bring OK into focus but since this is the default button for the dialog, hitting Enter will activate the button even if it does not have focus.

If still not working, then, depening on what version of Windows you're running, you boot up into safe mode, then select the "System Restore" feature, then select a day and time from the calender that appear that was before the time that your computer's display got messed up.

If your version of Windows has system restore, you can usually find it under:
"Start", then "Programs", then "Accessories", then "System Tools" then "System Restore".
It can take a few minutes to do a sytem restore, so be patient.Ã,  Windows will rebot after attempting the system restore, and when loads in again will display a message of if it was successful or not.

*Edit*Ã,  Oops.. Just noticed you put you're running "W98"... In that case it won't have the System Restore feature. But I'll leave my System Restore info here in my reply in case any other users may encounter similar problems and it could be something useful for them to try.Ã,  For Windows98, I guess the best thing would be try to get into Safe-Mode as I suggessted and re-adjust the display properties from there.

Great! Thank you all for your input. I will follow your advice tomorrow morning first thing (my PC is in the office). I have also thought of going to regedit, HKEYCURRENTCONFIG - DISPLAY - SETTINGS - RESOLUTION, and change resolution from there, or else reinstall DX8, but I will first follow your advice.
Thanks again. I will let you know as soon as the problem is solved. :-*

The game should never leave the resolution like that - could be something odd with DirectX or the graphics drivers.

Hello. Could solve problem OK. Here's howto: started up in safe mode (F8) right clicked to screen properties, resolution was as always (640) Okeyed and was asked to reboot, which I did, and presto! size restored. However, only 16 colors, so I had to reinstall SIS6326 driver from Windows/System. Thanks a lot for your help. BTW: dare not reinstall Momsquest (sorry). Hope this helps, thank you again.

Hey Marsu.. glad to know you got the problem fixed and that we are of some help to you.
Yes, every once in a while programs / hardware  / windows / combination-therof can cause strange conflicts like that.
You might want to consider to download and install the most current graphic-driver for your graphics-adapter/card, and also perhaps get the most recent version of DirectX installed too
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/

And perhaps when running other AGS games in future, you might want to initially try and run the game in 640x400 mode first? (from the Setup options). Just in case a similar "crash" happens, then at least your desktop should be still in 640x400 display mode.
