Very odd problem when opening most games :(

whenever i download a new game like ben jordan or 5 days a stranger i get a window saying that there was a problem initializing graphics mode (16- bit), which is wierd because i ran these games before with no problems and when i try changing my color setting it still doesnt work . Any ideas as to what i should do?

Try running DXDIAG.

Did you switch to Vista or a new graphics adapter?
Try changing the resolution to 640x400. Or better: use the x2 nearest-neighbor filter.

If the game is too old to feature the filter, you can run it with the 2.72 engine:
-rename the game.exe to ac2game.dat
-download AGS2.72 and copy acwin.exe to the game folder
-run "acwin.exe --setup" (by creating a shortcut or via the command prompt)
