When will we be able to do this? It would be really cool..

You already can, can't you? It was in the improved Demo Quest a little while ago...

I think that was just using some scripting trick, support for such kind of rooms is still cool, but it depends on whether it's a most wanted feature.

Are you kidding? That would take AGES to implement. There IS a way to render a panoramic view in Bryce or other 3D programs, for example, that you can use with scrolling. The pic you showed, however, isn't just one large image that the viewport scrolls through. The angles change on certain things, whereas on scrollable images, it has a rounded-out look to it.

I wouldn't hold my breath for this to be implemented, unless it's a scrolling window,  like in Demo Quest.

One way to do it is to render your image out with 90° camera angles in each direction and map the 6 images onto the inside of a 3d cube. then look at it from the centre of the cube in any direction and you have the correct 3d view..  It's harder to do than making ordinary backgrounds so it probably wouldn't get used that much and also would require a 3d perspective view and a radically different system for hotspots and walkable areas.. basically I think it'd require most of the ags engine to be redone so it's not really possible, at least if you did it that way.  But i can't think of a simpler one myself.

Actually, I think you're putting a little too much into this. A 360° bg would only mean that the bg would repeat when you get to the far left or right on the bg - just like in the demo. No need for any fancy 3d-effects, really.

In Synth's example it's a bit more complicated than that. If you turn around, you'll see that lines that were once straight are now angled. That's impossible right now AGS. Of course, scotch had the right idea, in that you could render all 6 angles to the inner faces of a hollow cube and look around, but that's only if 3D were implemented.

For now, the example in Demo Quest will have to suffice, in that you appear to be walking around in one big circle. That takes a little bit of scripting to accomplish, but I'm sure it's worth the effort. :)

What if we made a "Fish Eye Lens" plug in, and then do a scrolling room, wouldn't that get the same affect?

Isn't it possible to make a quicktime-plugin for AGS? Because for example bryce makes quicktime-panoramas... and I made once a game 360degrees with Multimedia Fusion and Quicktime
